i'm sure everybody here will kick me off here but i have to say this: YES, i do preffer The Cathedrals' version for this song; and YES, i think Jay Parrack is better than Brian Free... But i love Gold City as much as The Cathedrals... and Brian Free is a great tenor, i just think Jay is better... ;D
@MrKyledude18 Does anyone know if Brian still has that much range now a days? I know a lot of singers tend to lose some top range when they start getting older. I haven't followed him for awhile, so I'm not sure if he's doing stuff like "Looking for a city" and other super high singing like what's in this song.
@mjdewalt he still has most of the range and bfaa (brian free and assurance) still sings looking for a city and he still tears it up! their bass is good too!
Bless Brian Free's little heart, but his voice lacks depth and while it is very high tenor it isn't exactly pleasant to listen to for any extended period. I like my tenor with a little more range and depth, but that is just me.
I think the Cathedrals had a better arrangement of this song, but you can't knock Gold City for not being rock solid. These guys are all talented. Brian is truly in a league of his own.
Tremendous singers especially Brian Free. What a voice this guy has. The entire quartet, nothing less than a blessing! God Bless them everyone and thanks for sharing your talent with the world.
@chattownco13 How does someone do that with their voice. I am guessing you are talking about Tim Riley. You have to be blessed with talent which Tim is, a good sound tech, the proper settings and a LOT of volume help too. Not all bass singers were blessed with the natural deep voice of JD Sumner, so most needed help. When the song called for lower notes, the mic came in close because volume was lost in voice.
Great video, its nice to see the the guys when they were a bit younger. It amazes me how much Tim and his son Dan look alike. You can really see it in these video's. Thanks for posting . .
These guys do a superb job ... yet they still are not as good as the Cathedrals. However, it's what's in the heart that counts ... and they sure have plenty of HEART:-)
You are a fool. I'm only assuming that you are a true believer ... do you really think that God is going to give you a pat on the back for an ignorant comment such as yours?
If you don't like, then don't listen to it and don't watch it. I'm pretty darn sure that God is more pleased with what these great men have done with their testimonies through Southern Gospel music than with the time you've wasted in writing that comment.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They all pretty much were lousy, especially Tim Riley. These guys were everything that is wrong with Southern Gospel, but the were pretty entertaining. Then again, for the most part, Southern Gospel is a perfomance art rather than a spiritual experience. The stupid faces and goofing off is really stupid.
This is awesome! I saw them do it in person many times. I like Kirk but Brian is about ten million times better on this song and further if you listen to the close knit harmonies at 3:10 you will hear a quartet that can blend well on a fast song. Kirk's version was filled with nothing but falsetto gimmicks.
Let me just settle this, I like Ernie BUT he will NEVER be as good as Brian free. Who is the most awarded tenor? That would would be Mr. Brian free!!!
i dont know why you guys are fighting like this they are all great tenor's but the one i think who has improved most over the years is Brian Free seemed like he was afraid to go high when he was with Gold City
i am sorry, the song is good and all, but brian free sounds so annoying with that high pitched whistle he calls a note, i too prefer te cathedrals version
i dont think that you are a tenor singer, but any of them will tell you that that "note" he is singing is just a high pitched squeal at the most not truly a note...not even really high. You can barely hear the word because he doesn't even pronounce it fully when he hits it, i am not saying that he isnt good cause i have heard brian free and like you said with time he has gotten much better
I like the way the Cathedrals did it when Kirk Talley was their tennor singer. If you look this song wasnt famous until the cathedrals did it. Then again the Cathedrals were more well known than Gold City. And Ernie is a good tennor but he tries to go where his voice can not. Kirk is THE best tennor. 2nd only to Mack Taunton
not really......once the Cathedrals passed Gold City they never caught back up to the Cathedral Quartet. And they Cathedrals passed Gold city before the cathedrals got either of there two great tenors. Kirk Talley or Danny Funderburk and Mack never heard this song
Ahem....Lets not forget Gary Sheperd. Kingsmen tenor on "The Judgment" as well as many other Kingsmen songs. Excuses comes to mind as well. Just my personal favorite!!

Back in the 90's my gospel group sang this song, and sang Brian's part and we had a girl singing she did not want to sing that part.

I agree! It's hard to beat Brian, Mike, Ivan and Tim (even though I love the Cathedrals, I like Brian's tenor better than Kirk, Danny or Ernie).
