I'm calling BS on the the whats the harm site. the people listed there that dies or were injured or where the cause of the death of another were simply too stupid to be out of doors if it wasn't this it would have been something else.
Some people should not be left to think for themselves and the site has a list of them to be sure.
Not to mention they have ruby ridge under apocalypse fear, forgetting the fact that the weaver family was aquitted of all charges and FBI agents were disciplined for their actions and the weaver family got over 2 million dollars in damages.
That is a funny site, but like speculated, if you documented all the screw ups from "normal" beliefs/practices, medical and otherwise, the total damage would almost make these wackos seem like they took the safe route, lol.
indeed take the vaccine thing. What's the harm in vaccine denial?
"Despite their widespread beneficial effects, some people deny that vaccines work, or accuse them of causing various side-effects" erm you mean like the redskin cheerleader who took a flu vaccine and now has a neurological disorder as a direct result? or the Gardasil deaths?

What's the harm huh? Medical treatments cause 200,000 deaths in the USA each year. Tit for tat. For every "alt med horror story" you cough up anyone could find many more "modern western medical blunders" to counter them. They both have their place and they both can fuck you up. Period. Penn needs to get a clue. His bias/ignorance is disappointing. I really like his show - but this is unforgivable.
The pledge video is very much reminiscent of a Hitlerian Gestapo gang. I do agree the video stinks and is very very bad.
There is nothing American about pledging anything to an elected official! It is just the opposite Obama has Pledged to Keep his promises that HE OBAMA has pledged to Us the American People. But has Lied on every one he promised. How does he think he changed and flipped that coin? Obama is an ass hole one that needs to been thrown out on his ass. Obama FAILS again
Kim Jong il is an atheist and he's gonna destroy us all. It's not cause he's atheist... or maybe he hates religion so much he wants to make sure he gets 'em all. Atheist or otherwise, the problem is man. They tend to do whatever they have the power to do or not do. Kim can nuke, Penn can blog, I can type. No one can change anything though. See how that works?
Hmm, I can think of many examples of atheism hurting people. People who have no believe in values or morals kill people because they have no conscious, we call them psychopaths. They only believe in themselves. Of course that's an extreme example, but you asked for it.
Atheism doesn't have anything to do with not having values and morals, or killing people. Those people, the psychopaths you're talking about, come from all walks of life. Suicide bombers? Abortion clinic bombers? Those were people of faith, and look what they did to this world. I can't speak for all atheists, but for myself, I don't need to be threatened with eternal damnation to know that killing another human being is morally wrong.
To be fair, there will ALWAYS be harm in every belief. Even atheism has caused harm in the past. Nothing is ever going to be completely harmless, but it based on who's hands those beliefs fall into to determine whether or not a certain belief system is harmful.
To COMALiteJ: There is a very big difference between harm caused by alt-med stuff and harm caused by mistakes in real medicine. It's all about risk vs. benefit: is the benefit worth the risk?
Real medicine tells you the risk of something going wrong, in fact they are required to. You weigh the risk, and choose your treatment.
Alternative medicine never tells you anything about risks, and the benefit is non-existent. Thus it is almost always a bad bet. That's the difference.
How easy is it to hit your personal image reset button? Very hard when you talk about free speech and censorship, and allow your content to get censored itself.
Don't forget the Documentary movie called The San Pedro Haunting. The most insane haunting footage ever filmed.
The entity's tried to hang a man, orbs were seen everywhere, blood oozed from the walls. Ghost were seen and heard all the time. Everything was caught on film.
Great site.. But they don't have any psychiatric drugs on there.. It seems a little biased against anything "alternative." They should also include the "harm" done by big drug corperations that do use "science" to "harm."
People also say that about pharmaceuticals. I once did. People accept those things just because there are commercials and doctors prescribe them. "What's the harm?"
Actually, jinitron, Brock is right that the site is lame. What I corrected him on is the claim that EVERYTHING on it is LIES.
The point of the site is that all of these people were harmed, physically, financially, or whatever, by "someone not thinking critically." But in some (NOT ALL) of the cases, the harm was actually caused by something else (Brock brings up the loony with the gun who shot two girls "ghost-hunting" near his house).
Moreover, critical thinking has also harmed people.
Case in point: about ½ the site is about causes related to alternative medicine (even subjects not listed under the "Medical" header, such as Faith Healing).
And yet, the TOTAL body count of ALL of the incidents listed on the site is, by their own count, 368,379 people. That's killed, not just harmed.
That TOTAL is outnumbered MANYFOLD by the deaths from modern medicine. "Iatrogenic" causes of death (medical malpractice, pharmaceutical side effects, etc.) is the #3 cause of death in the USA.
Even barring malpractice and mispractice, "iatrogenic" causes of death kill a lot more people than Farley's entire list. Side effects of pharmaceuticals PROPERLY PRESCRIBED AND USED is a major killer (and can even kill people OTHER THAN the ones who actually took the medicines!), not to mention hospital-acquired antibiotic-resistant infections.
Besides, my point was using the SAME rationale that Farley uses, namely, blaming anything even remotely tangential, critical thinking kills also.
Case in point: under "Ayurvedic Medicine," Farley mainly lists cases of lead poisoning resulting from tainted Ayurvedic preparations. Blaming Ayurvedic medicine ITSELF for that is EVERY BIT as fallacious as blaming modern medicine for the rash of cyanide deaths from tainted Tylenol® in the late 1970s (remember that? The reason that all OTC medications sold in the USA are now multiply sealed and tamper-resistant?) would be.
A doctor who continues to misdose or misprescribe a drug to the point that it kills the patient, without heed to adverse symptoms, is not practicing modern medicine correctly. Drugs that are likely to kill a patient need to be administered under watch (or are being applied as a 'last measure'), i.e. MJ.
Also, on "Ayurvedic" medicine, the whole point is it's a happy-go-lucky backyard practice without any of the rigors of modern medicine (which, as you note, often aren't applied well enough).
Again, we're talking about the SPECIFIC TACTICS used by Farley on his website (THE TOPIC of this video).
We can split hairs all we want, but you know good and well that modern medicine can and does kill, EVEN WITHOUT malpractice. It's not perfect yet. People die from ANESTHETIC used in surgery.
And besides, critical thinking by Einstein gave us E=mc², which led to the deaths of thousands in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the way things are going, millions more to come.
My point is that you've formulated that phrase so that it becomes a general statement, i.e. modern medicine kills. I'm glad you're taking time to attempt to educate Brock, but be careful about how you denigrate science, putting quackery on a pedestal because some doc killed.
This is the same question raised when you say "critical thinking kills." Does it? No. Critical thinking only creates possibilities; some great, some not. In fact critical thinking is a core part of the practice of morality.
Ed, what I'm talking about is ONLY Farley's website tactics. His conclusion is that the people in his linked stories were "harmed BECAUSE someone didn't think critically."
For many of his stories, that is a stretch indeed. Yes, those girls likely would not have been harmed if they hadn't been out ghost-hunting. But THAT is NOT WHY they were harmed. They were harmed because they trespassed on the property of an armed paranoid loony hermit.
The paranoid loony hermit, or rather, the ammo from his gun, is what harmed them, not the lack of critical thinking per se. Had they trespassed on his property for ANY OTHER reason, EVEN A REASON INVOLVING CRITICAL THINKING, the SAME THING would've happened.
Of course, even then it could be argued that HIS lack of critical thinking harmed them, I suppose, but that wasn't the case that Farley was making by including that story (note that it's under the "Ghosts" heading, NOT "Armed Loons").
I'm not putting quackery on a pedestal. I'm simply pointing out that THIS SITE uses flawed logic, and ITSELF an example of non-critical thinking on the part of its maker, Farley.
For the record, modern medicine is descended from naturopathy, etc. (but NOT the likes of homeopathy, which is 100% Grade-A BS). Every pharmaceutical whose name ends in "-in" or "-ine" is derived or synthesized from biological sources (e.g. penicillIN from mold, asprIN from willow bark, etc. etc. etc.).
Furthermore, Farley was counting outside-tainted materials and obvious malpractice (even for the quacks) of the alternative medicines. So, by the rules of HIS SITE, it would be fair to include all malpractice medical examples as well, in which case modern medicine would "win" the body count comparison against ALL OTHERS COMBINED by an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE or more.
If we eliminate malpractice cases for modern medicine, it's only fair to do likewise for the alternatives.
The difference being that, not being regulated, or based on a set of rigorous doctrines, there's no way to accuse a quack of "malpractice." That would be holding them to the standards of...wait for it...modern medicine!
Now do you understand why I took issue with your lumping modern science, and reasoning for that matter, with things that simply don't belong on that same pedestal?
I firmly believe that all alternative medicine disciplines should be as thoroughly regulated as modern medicine is. Many of the cases involving them on Farley's site are not due to the principles themselves, but the lack of regulation thanks to the loopholes that prevent the FDA from properly regulating them.
But even with regulation, there've been MANY cases of mass harm and deaths resulting from bad pharmaceuticals reaching the market.
For instance they have a category called "What's the harm in believing in ghosts"
They then link to a news article of a girl who drives by a "haunted house" to get a good look and the idioit guy who lives there shot her in the head with a gun.
Each category and news article is as stupid as that one. So they are trying to say that if you believe in ghosts you can possibly be shot in the head and that believing in ghosts caused her to be shot...
Yes, that particular story is misleading, and so are several others on the site (e.g. blaming Ayurvedic medicine principals for lead poisoning caused by tainted medicines — by that logic, we could blame modern medicine for the cyanide deaths caused by tainted Tylenol® in the 1970s, which is why OTC pharmaceuticals now come in multiply-sealed tamper-resistant packaging that's so hard to open).
But your claim was that EVERYTHING on the site is a LIE. A LIE is a WILLFUL untruth.
Penn reminds me of the otters from the atheist war episode of South Park. He's pretty much everything he hates. A fanatic atheist just as bad as a religious fanatic.
Whenever anyone criticizes Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, Zionists cry "antisemitiism" & "we're holocaust victims." It's become a sick joke. Amnesty Internatiional has condemned Israel for mass murder. Humanitarian Jews everywhere, including Noam Chomsky, Tony Judt, Eric Alterman, Sir Gerald Kaufman decry Zionism's exploitation of the the memory of the holocaust to inflict the same horrors on the Palestinians. Zionist terrorist Avraham Stern offered to collaborate with Hitrler.
Tim Farley's wahtstheharm website lists isolated incidences of death from snake handler cults, Christian Science, etc., but does not touch Zionism, the belief that an INVISIBLE RACIST CLOUD FATHER told the mythical ancestors of European Jews that they were superior and should enslave or kill the rest of humanity, and seize the desert east iof the Mediterranean. This fairytale has cost the US hundreds of billions, and justifies Palestininian apartheid/genocide. 300 babies killed in Gaza alone.
Interestingly enough, there is evidence that the land of Palestine isn't even the land of Israel in the Old Testament (prior to the Babylonian Exile)! That the land where Jesus walked is NOT the land that David and Solomon ruled, EVEN IF the Bible were true!
Remember, according to the Bible, after the death of Solomon, his son Rehoboam was a tyrant that drove 10 of the 12 tribes to rebellion. They seceded under Jeroboam as the Kingdom of Israel, leaving Rehoboam with the Kingdom of Judah.
Fast-forward a dozen or so generations: Israel has finally ticked God off enough that He wipes them from His sight forever, by having the Assyrians take the whole nation captive. They lost their identity and became the Lost Ten Tribes.
Only Judah, Benjamin, and ½ the Levites were left in the Kingdom of Judah.
A couple more generations later, Judah also ticks God off enough to get captured, this time by the Babylonians. But to keep His promise to David, they retained their identity.
It was while captive in Babylon that we first see the Judahites called by the name "Jews."
70 years (a HUMAN LIFETIME according to the Bible!) later, after Babylon itself had been conquered by the Medes and Persians, Cyrus the Mede released those Jews who wanted to go to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. Ezra and Nehemiah led this effort.
The thing is, who, 70 years later, would remember where their homeland was? Even an 80-year-old would've been a pre-teen kid when he last saw it!
Yeah. What BrockSucks said. That "What's the Harm" site is all lies.
I especially noticed how they linked each of the stories to an actual news source or similar authoritative site, to try to get us to believe their lies.
As if we couldn't tell that they'd hacked each and every one of those sites to make them back up their lies.
I mean, who do they think they're trying to fool, anyway?
(In case you couldn't tell, the preceding paragraphs were brought to you by Dripping® Sarcasm™.)
Wow, what a rebuttal! You certainly refuted my point!
What you said was, and I quote, "EVERYTHING on that site is a LIE." (first emphasis mine, second YOURS).
To back up your claim, you must quote each and every story posted and show how not only is each and every one of them COMPLETELY false with NO iota of truth WHATsoever, but that the operator of the site KNEW that each was false when posting the stories.
Even ONE item of truth on that site would refute your claim.
Also, why the fuck are you talking about jews and zionists?
I am jewish and i am not a zionist...i am so sick of anti-semites it is honestly ridiculous?
6 million jews slaughtered in ovens and being gased to death wasn't enough? You still want to blame the jews and try to prove that ALL jews are "satanists and zionists"...come on. Israel has a right to exist, and so does palestine. But suicide bombings and the Terrorist body of Hamas (which rules Gaza) is not the way to gain independence.
Are you a comedian or as politician...stick to comedy and don't try to force your politically biased beliefs down peoples throats...
The sad part is that i often agree with the things you say but you have a very narrow view of the world and you have very strong opinions. Don't try and be another Bill Moher..please, we only have room for one biased political comedian.
*I'm an Independent btw*
Sorry i just thought this had to do with Ghostbusters and im annoyed at this BS.
What exactly does this have to do with Ghostbusters? Since it is a video response to the Ghostbusters Movie I figured it would have to do with Ghostbusters.
After going to the site and reading all the examples of christian science, I say good riddance to bad rubbish. If only more idiotic christians would put themselves in harms way and pray to a god that it'll save them. Call me bitter, mark my post as spam, but seriously, religion has caused nothing but war and blood shed. If they find new ways to off themselves without taking innocent people, the better. So continue having your pathetic Arabian wars and thinking god will cure your cancer.
Israel is commiting an ongoing apartheid and genocide against the Palestinians and US taxpayers are funding it, yet most Americans don't even know it due to Zionist-controlled mainstream media and education.
300 children slaughtered in Gaza and many more mutilated.
Prominent humanitarian Jews everywhere condemn Israel for using the memory of the holocaust to justify the atrocities they hurl upon the Palestinian people.
Why does this self-proclaimed "militant atheist" never criticize Zionism, the belief that Jews have an INVISIBLE RACIST CLOUD FATHER who promised their mythical ancestors Israel 1000s of years ago, & so now they are entitled to take 100s of billions from US taxpayers to wall up Palestinians in isolated ghettos & bombard them with US-made missiles?
Penn Jillette's TV show is owned by uber-Zionist Sumner Redstone, so Penn Jillette will never criticize Zionists commiting apartheid and genocide.

You spelled libertarian wrong in your tags, jackass. Your damned assistant spelled it "libretarian"... That hurts the spread of your excellent ideas. Please fix it, or you are not taking full advantage of the technology.
But Penn Jillette will never criticize the lying racist Zionist mass baby killers. Uber-Zionist Sumner Redstone owns Penn Jillette's TV show. Penn Jillette is Sumner Redstone's fat dancing monkey shill. For "tonzimala":
Must you comment the same raving shit on every video?!?!?!?
We get it. You have a point of view and EVERYONE is aware of it now... Please stop. I'm not even arguing your point. I'm also not agreeing with it. Even if you were saying that I, personally was the greatest man alive, I would be sick of hearing about it by now.
You've gone ahead and expressed your views... repeatedly. Bravo, we're all thrilled for you, now please STOP!!!
Nobody wanted to believe the holocaust while it was happening either. Even the New York TImes buried whatever scant coverage it ran on back pages.
Penn Jillette is a passionate opponent of two things: unjustified government expense, and government policy based on religion.
The US government has given hundreds of billions to Israel to evict, ghettoize and slaughter the Palestinians, because European Jews claim the land was given to their mythical ancestors thousands of years ago by GOD.
Zionists base their genocide of the Palestinian people on a fairytale, that somehow they have a conneciton to mythical ancient nomads whose INVISIBLE RACIST CLOUD FATHER told them they were special and should enslave or kill the rest of humanity. Amnesty International just condemned Israel for war crimes, for deliberately bombing residential areas in Gaza killing 1400 Palestinians, 300 of them children. These atrocities are funded by US taxpayers. Zionists run US govt, media, banking & NYC.
people who were burned at the stake for Witchcraft know what the harm is. Unfortunately, all of these victims of religious zealotry are ALL DEAD, and can not tell you WHAT THE HARM IS ! Do we all have to join them in order to realize that faith in primative barbaric stupidity IS HARMFUL and CAUSES INNOCENT PEOPLE TO BE KILLED?
People say what's the harm of religion. The people who were taken by reverend Jim Jones to a remote island nation and enslaved, and forced to drink poison kool aid know what the harm is. Over half of Europes population who were slaughtered in the Christian Crusades know what the harm is. The scientists who were slaughtered during the Spanish Inqsuisition for having telescopes and suggesting that the world is not flat know what the harm is. The

Penn Jillette is a well-paid huckster, shilling for his masters at the Cato Institute corporate propaganda mill, and his boss uber-Zionist Viacom mogul Sumner Redstone. Penn Jillette is basically Rush Limbaugh with chin pubes. He's all about sex and drug freedom to seduce more suckers to his Zionist, right wing whack job bullshit.
What's the harm in Zionism -- the psychotic fairytale that says Jews have an INVISIBLE RACIST CLOUD FATHER who tells them Jews are special and deserve to kill or enslave non-Jews, and steal the blood and sweat of US taxpayers to finance the eviction and genocide of the Palestinian people?
Penn Jillette will mock the sillier Biblical fictions and fussy superficial rituals of Orthodox Judaism, but he is a faithful devotee of Zionism, the religion of his Zionist master & boss, Sumner Redstone.
Well, I consider myself to be an "anti-theist." Not only do I not believe in any deities but I am actively glad there is no proof they they exist, for it would be a terrible thing if the celestial dictatorship that Christians subscribe to were actually real. Religion has not given us morality; rather it has generally caused devisiveness, anger and hostility toward those who do not share the views of the believers. Morality is an innate understanding of what is good and what is bad.
to masenkoboy......it sure would be nice if those people going around preaching god would bring some pot with them....and also.....religion is just a money making machine designed to condemn and control...... i am tired of it and the destruction it causes......please people, treat one another as you wish to be treated yourself
Except every other religion does *not* say that. And your "conscience" is firmly rooted in the morals and values of Western civilization, influenced by the Judeo-Christian bible and Greek philosophy.
Without a divine component, "morality" is simply what most people agree upon, what makes them feel good. In and of itself, morality has no value. It is something people made up.
I am *not* saying I believe that. I am a Theist :-D
Free country though, believe as you will. What's the harm? LOL
I looked at this website (all in one six hour setting), checked the "read more" links, and am convinced that half of the crap on this site is just that, crap. Yes, the attachment therapy is hideous as is the HIV/AIDS denial, but most of what I read occurs in countries that are "third world" and, please forgive me, underdeveloped in understanding of scienctific findings in the medical field (among others \) and are only doing what was taught them for centuries. Give me something closer to home!
Im not a Christian, I just believe in God and thats how I am, one thing that always come to my mind is, I hear alot of atheist talk about how Christians have alot of hate towards them, thats not true, I think at rue person of God wouldnt hate atheist rather have passion for them, and if that person has hate they aint a true person of God ,Guarentee if you are atheist u went to my dads church n told them how you believed they would still welcome you and not judge u not sayin im right ur wrong to
Thank You. Although this is how it SHOULD be, not all Christians look at Atheists (or more properly,Agnostics) that way. They just look at them as Satanists, or lost souls. If they were truely followers of God (or A God) then they would be open minded/hearted, and perhaps think "they just haven't found Him yet" instead of "they're going to Hell". I'm Agnostic btw, but I still attend a Christian youth group, simply b/c I feel that I should understand what I'm arguing against.
No one pushes there faith on neone, its called testifying, I guarentee you here in a few years it will come to be that the government will push those who believe in God out of church and try to banish religion and God, thats my thought tho, just dont like hearin someone say I hate when ppl push there relgions on you, well Ihate when ppl push there drugs and other bad things on others, if it was my choice id rather have someone come tome and talk about God someone tryin to get me to smoke pot
explain something to me. if athiests beleive in nothing greater than their own existence, then why be so passionate about defending their beleif in nothing? they are ultimately just defending their own egos. if that's not pure arrogance, then tell me what it is.
we're defending our way of life. We are tired of people who think they are so righteous pushing their beliefs and customs upon us, even putting it into law.
I'm sorry, but I reject your premise to begin with. I am an atheist, and I certainly believe in a LOT of things greater than my own existence. For one, I believe in your existence (unfortunately). I also believe that human suffering should be avoided, and human joy magnified.
And there's the answer to your question: I think that unbridled theism increases suffering and diminishes joy. THAT'S why I am so passionate. If you think compassion is arrogance, well.. you sound like Yahweh. :p
have you ever pondered the concept of 'time'? the way albert einstein did? the same albert einstein whose intelligence was far greater than yours and penn's put together? the same albert einstein that believed in God?
i'm sure you haven't. your glorious egos wouldn't allow it. becuase if you had, then you'd realize why einstein rejected athiesm.
Mr. Einstein also believed the universe was static, spite revealing that the universe is expanding in his calculation. Just goes to show that faith will constrict the thought of even the most genius of people.
contrict thought? faith does the opposite. yes, the known matter in the universe is moving away from each other (expanding), but eintein imagined the space that contained the matter itself to be a static dimension. it takes a wildly free mind to come up with theories like this, or the theory of relativity, or the theory of splitting atoms, or the theory that God exists in a dimension the human mind cannot possibly conceive. read "fabric of the cosmos" by brian greene.
you see, you believe humans live a life of both joy and suffering, then die to become nothing, as if they have never existed at all. that means all our kids will die and become nothing, and our kids' kids will die and become nothing, and so on. and everyone who has ever lived is nothing.
well, if the past is nothing, and the future is nothing, then now is nothing. joy is nothing. suffering is nothing. everything is nothing.
so thank you. thank you for sharing your compassion for nothing.

Does your whatstheharm site list the harm in athiesm? Depression, hopelessness and immorality for starters? How fucking stupid are you that you can't understand the utility of religion or why humans need it? Look at the fucking world around you, you really think all the evils of man come from religion? In fact the evils of man come from the nature of man. Religion sometimes helps and sometimes hurts, but at least christianity is a normalizing force. Atheists provide nothing of the kind.
while drugs have their uses in some cases for example antibiotics for malaria, but to apply that to every sickness is voodoo in of itself, the way to better health is by balancing the immune system, endocrine system etc,but pumping the body full of drugs not only has side effects it dosent get to the root cause and is a holocaust, especially in the usa, yet even now penn is attacking natural methods that treat the cause as harmful, while not a peep about the devestating consequences of allopathy.
You say this as if it's news to anyone in the medical community. Overprescribing drugs is a problem and it is related to the pharmaceutical industry. That doesn't mean dried rutabaga is a better solution, it just means that for many reasons people are more likely to ask for more pills than to alter their whole lifestyle, or even learn to take the pills they're already on correctly. I'm not even going to ask where you got the idea that it's a "holocaust".
Wow are people seriously taking advice from a graduate of Barnum and Baileys clown college?! Scientific research just like anything i our economically driven culture follows the money. If there is no money to be made from something chances are it will not be researched as completely. Natural remedies can't be patented like drugs and therefore can't be monopolized by a single company. Because of this research behind natural healing methods like chiropractic and homeopathy is largely anecdotal
tru tru my friend. You are absolutely right. Scientific research has to be funded. Who says how the research goes? the people who funded the research.
If they worked they could be researched scientifically and patented. Changing one non-essential molecule is enough to get you a new patent. Many medications we currently use are refined forms of so-called "natural remedies". Penicillin is a great example. What's more, good studies have been done on things like homeopathy, acupuncture, and chiropractice. The people who make money from those things don't like the results though. Basically you're talking out your ass is what I'm trying to say.
You obviously did not catch what I had said about research so let me clearly explain step by step.
1. Research must be funded.
2. "Natural Remedies" can not be patented.
3. Since they can't be patented a single company can not monopolize them.
4. Therefore there is little to no money invested in exploring the efficacy of natural remedies because the company doing the research can not monopolize the natural remedy.
Clearly you don't know where Penicillin and Aspirin come from. Natural remedies work in exactly the same way drugs do. Find out why the natural remedy works and you can make a drug. Both the aforementioned (extremely common) drugs were developed this way. If a company isolates and synthesizes the active ingredient first, you're god damn right they can patent it. So yes I understand you, it's just that you're a complete idiot who knows nothing about anything.
Actually I do know where both penicillin and Aspirin come from. The problem with isolating the active ingredients is that you seperate it from its naturally occuring components. I actually made aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid in one of my numerous chemistry classes. Acetylsalicylic acid is the active ingredient derived from white willow bark and has been used since the time of the ancient greeks. The patent process is what funds research and for natural remedies the research is not funded.
The reason natural remedies are not funded is because natural remedies in their natural stated can NOT be patented and there for MONOPOLIZED by a money hungry company. There is no reason to get angry and resort to personal attacks. Even with the lack of funding there are several studies that show white willow bark to be a more effective therapy then the purified and artificial acetylsalicylic acid. Most of them occurring in Europe.
So are you backing down from your idiotic claim that natural remedies "cannot be patented"? Also, what's wrong with removing the ACTIVE ingredient from its naturally occurring components? It seems to me that isolating the one part that actually does anything is a good idea. In any case, you simply can't argue with the results of real medicine. Life expectancy and quality are way, way up from the times when natural remedies were all we had.
I have to take exception to the chiropractic issues on that site. I've been getting chiropractic treatment for years and know many other people that have also.
I was taken to the emergency room of a local hospital with severe back pain one time and the doctor on duty not only didn't order x-rays, she wrote me scripts after only touching my toes.
Shortly there after, I went to a chiropractor that took x-rays. It was painful just looking at them. Needless to say, he fixed the problem...
To everyone. Just because something isn't verifiable by "science" doesn't mean its not true. Believe me, I'm not a religious person when it comes to "mainstream religion". Its all bullshit. That, however, does not discount spirituality and the like. Look up "My Big TOE". Very insightful physicist who's actually done studies into things like meditation and Out of Body Experiences among other t hings.
I asked you to believe i was not a religion person ;). Me thinking david icke is right has nothing to do with that. I also asked you to go look up "My Big TOE"... a talk by Dr. Campbell.
For anyone commenting who doesn't know, what chiball66 is trying to say is this: "I BELIEVE IN EVIL LIZARD PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE CENTER OF THE EARTH AND CONTROL THE ILLUMINATI EVERYONE ELSE IS SHEEP YOU ARE ALL SHEEP." In other words s/he is stone cold fucking crazy and can safely be ignored. This has been a Public Service announcement about chiball66.
If you get past the original holy fuck to that which goes against everything conventional i've been led to believe... and truly get into.. i think you'd be surprised how far this shit goes...
Okay let's see... Yep, mostly English words arranged approximately where they would need to be to form sentences... And yet totally incomprehensible, what a shame. I'm sure you had something very interesting to say.
Waiting to hear "atheist" Penn Jillette's scathing criticism of the harm done by belief in Jewish mythology, including the ongoing displacement and holocaust of the Palestinian people, paid for with US tax dollars.
Still waiting.
What, still silent?
What's that you say? Your boss, Viacom mogul Sumner Redstone who owns "Penn & Teller: Bullshit," is also a staunch supporter of Israel and an anti-Muslim bigot?
Oh, I see. Everyone should be an atheist except the Jews. Got it.
Just like our president avoided a conference on racism because he would have been called on his support of Israel and it's practice of murdering Palestinians for "security" reasons. To me all religions are a blockade to progress with the human race. It's long been used to discriminate and belittle others.

Why do people always have to put astrology in this sort of magick, superstition, religious category? Astrology isn't a religion, it's merely a study, which explains the "ology" suffix. It's also a practice. So of course there's no harm. Just as there's no harm being atheist - astrologers aren't harming anything. I'm agnostic but I see nothing wrong with astrology - it's FUN. Especially natal astrology.
Scientology is merely a study too. An ology after a word doesnt make that thing credible.
The point of whatstheharm & this vid is that when people make decisions based on BS the the potential for harm exists. What if someone who takes astrology seriously decides not to get a life saving operation because they get a reading that tells them now isn't the time to be taking risks, things will be ok if you ride it out?
Bottom line is anything that claims to be true when it isnt can be harmful.
"ology" means "study", not "credibility" - I get that. How does natal astrology fail? It doesn't for me - it's still just a fun hobby to me. And in the end...everything humanity thinks up, believes, creates...it all has the worth of being bullshit because it's subjective and in vain of the "objective truth". I could be wrong right now - so what makes you two so "truthful"?
I checked out the site. Its very bias. They forget that Christianity can make a thief, drug addict, murderer, ect...into a good person that makes way better choices then they did back then. It can even make that person worthy of respect. Jehovah's Witnesses are more of the damage acually.
I'm definately an atheist but I also believe in ghosts and telepathy. Why? Because I've had to deal with both of these things before. It would be a lot easier for me to not to have had any contact with anything supernatural. But since I have, it's something I have to deal with. I do not claim to understand, I wish I did. They talk about higher dimensions in physics, so perhaps there is a dimension that transmites thoughts. If so, I what I believe would not be supernatural.
He does it because his mother once told him that since he would be on T.V. a lot more he needed to take care of his hands, he painted his nail and asked if that's what she meant, he now does it in memory of her and that joke.
I don't understand why atheists love atheism so much. Even though I am an atheist I get pissed off at the reality of the world. All the unfairness and injustice that happened in the past and will probably happen in the future no matter what I try to do.
Furthermore, you are not going to enjoy your life in the midst of tragedy and gross injustice.
I'm an atheist. I see and recognize and, once or twice, was in the thick of some tragedy and gross injustice. If I was a believer, maybe I'd be mad at God? ::shrug::
Anyway, since I recognize that this life is so short and precious (and there's likely no encore) I am quite thoroughly enjoying my life.

I can't speak for all atheists, but for myself, I don't need to be threatened with eternal damnation to know that killing another human being is morally wrong.
murphydexter311 2 years ago 2

Hey, I love the movie, but I don't think the ghosts are real. Don't worry.

Because that alternate stuff is what MOST people say "what's the harm?" to.
You say homeopathy is wrong? WHAT'S THE HARM?
Believe Exorcism works? WHATS THE HARM?
Is that's a person's answer. Then that site is the cure.
jinitron 2 years ago
People also say that about pharmaceuticals. I once did. People accept those things just because there are commercials and doctors prescribe them. "What's the harm?"
robshaps 2 years ago
Actually, jinitron, Brock is right that the site is lame. What I corrected him on is the claim that EVERYTHING on it is LIES.
The point of the site is that all of these people were harmed, physically, financially, or whatever, by "someone not thinking critically." But in some (NOT ALL) of the cases, the harm was actually caused by something else (Brock brings up the loony with the gun who shot two girls "ghost-hunting" near his house).
Moreover, critical thinking has also harmed people.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
Case in point: about ½ the site is about causes related to alternative medicine (even subjects not listed under the "Medical" header, such as Faith Healing).
And yet, the TOTAL body count of ALL of the incidents listed on the site is, by their own count, 368,379 people. That's killed, not just harmed.
That TOTAL is outnumbered MANYFOLD by the deaths from modern medicine. "Iatrogenic" causes of death (medical malpractice, pharmaceutical side effects, etc.) is the #3 cause of death in the USA.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
Not "modern medicine," you mean malpractice and mispractice. Nice try though
EdOscuro 2 years ago
Even barring malpractice and mispractice, "iatrogenic" causes of death kill a lot more people than Farley's entire list. Side effects of pharmaceuticals PROPERLY PRESCRIBED AND USED is a major killer (and can even kill people OTHER THAN the ones who actually took the medicines!), not to mention hospital-acquired antibiotic-resistant infections.
Besides, my point was using the SAME rationale that Farley uses, namely, blaming anything even remotely tangential, critical thinking kills also.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
Case in point: under "Ayurvedic Medicine," Farley mainly lists cases of lead poisoning resulting from tainted Ayurvedic preparations. Blaming Ayurvedic medicine ITSELF for that is EVERY BIT as fallacious as blaming modern medicine for the rash of cyanide deaths from tainted Tylenol® in the late 1970s (remember that? The reason that all OTC medications sold in the USA are now multiply sealed and tamper-resistant?) would be.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
A doctor who continues to misdose or misprescribe a drug to the point that it kills the patient, without heed to adverse symptoms, is not practicing modern medicine correctly. Drugs that are likely to kill a patient need to be administered under watch (or are being applied as a 'last measure'), i.e. MJ.
Also, on "Ayurvedic" medicine, the whole point is it's a happy-go-lucky backyard practice without any of the rigors of modern medicine (which, as you note, often aren't applied well enough).
EdOscuro 2 years ago
Again, we're talking about the SPECIFIC TACTICS used by Farley on his website (THE TOPIC of this video).
We can split hairs all we want, but you know good and well that modern medicine can and does kill, EVEN WITHOUT malpractice. It's not perfect yet. People die from ANESTHETIC used in surgery.
And besides, critical thinking by Einstein gave us E=mc², which led to the deaths of thousands in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the way things are going, millions more to come.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
My point is that you've formulated that phrase so that it becomes a general statement, i.e. modern medicine kills. I'm glad you're taking time to attempt to educate Brock, but be careful about how you denigrate science, putting quackery on a pedestal because some doc killed.
This is the same question raised when you say "critical thinking kills." Does it? No. Critical thinking only creates possibilities; some great, some not. In fact critical thinking is a core part of the practice of morality.
EdOscuro 2 years ago
EdOscuro , I already know what I'm talking about. Don't you worry about me.
BrockSucks 2 years ago
I really hate 500-character limits!
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
The paranoid loony hermit, or rather, the ammo from his gun, is what harmed them, not the lack of critical thinking per se. Had they trespassed on his property for ANY OTHER reason, EVEN A REASON INVOLVING CRITICAL THINKING, the SAME THING would've happened.
Of course, even then it could be argued that HIS lack of critical thinking harmed them, I suppose, but that wasn't the case that Farley was making by including that story (note that it's under the "Ghosts" heading, NOT "Armed Loons").
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
I'm not putting quackery on a pedestal. I'm simply pointing out that THIS SITE uses flawed logic, and ITSELF an example of non-critical thinking on the part of its maker, Farley.
For the record, modern medicine is descended from naturopathy, etc. (but NOT the likes of homeopathy, which is 100% Grade-A BS). Every pharmaceutical whose name ends in "-in" or "-ine" is derived or synthesized from biological sources (e.g. penicillIN from mold, asprIN from willow bark, etc. etc. etc.).
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
Furthermore, Farley was counting outside-tainted materials and obvious malpractice (even for the quacks) of the alternative medicines. So, by the rules of HIS SITE, it would be fair to include all malpractice medical examples as well, in which case modern medicine would "win" the body count comparison against ALL OTHERS COMBINED by an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE or more.
If we eliminate malpractice cases for modern medicine, it's only fair to do likewise for the alternatives.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
The difference being that, not being regulated, or based on a set of rigorous doctrines, there's no way to accuse a quack of "malpractice." That would be holding them to the standards of...wait for it...modern medicine!
Now do you understand why I took issue with your lumping modern science, and reasoning for that matter, with things that simply don't belong on that same pedestal?
EdOscuro 2 years ago
Regulation ≠ critical thinking.

This fairytale has cost the US hundreds of billions, and justifies Palestininian apartheid/genocide. 300 babies killed in Gaza alone.
bc9021010001 2 years ago
Interestingly enough, there is evidence that the land of Palestine isn't even the land of Israel in the Old Testament (prior to the Babylonian Exile)! That the land where Jesus walked is NOT the land that David and Solomon ruled, EVEN IF the Bible were true!
Remember, according to the Bible, after the death of Solomon, his son Rehoboam was a tyrant that drove 10 of the 12 tribes to rebellion. They seceded under Jeroboam as the Kingdom of Israel, leaving Rehoboam with the Kingdom of Judah.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
Fast-forward a dozen or so generations: Israel has finally ticked God off enough that He wipes them from His sight forever, by having the Assyrians take the whole nation captive. They lost their identity and became the Lost Ten Tribes.
Only Judah, Benjamin, and ½ the Levites were left in the Kingdom of Judah.
A couple more generations later, Judah also ticks God off enough to get captured, this time by the Babylonians. But to keep His promise to David, they retained their identity.
COMALiteJ 2 years ago
It was while captive in Babylon that we first see the Judahites called by the name "Jews."
70 years (a HUMAN LIFETIME according to the Bible!) later, after Babylon itself had been conquered by the Medes and Persians, Cyrus the Mede released those Jews who wanted to go to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. Ezra and Nehemiah led this effort.
The thing is, who, 70 years later, would remember where their homeland was? Even an 80-year-old would've been a pre-teen kid when he last saw it!

Morality is an innate understanding of what is good and what is bad.

to masenkoboy......it sure would be nice if those people going around preaching god would bring some pot with them....and also.....religion is just a money making machine designed to condemn and control...... i am tired of it and the destruction it causes......please people, treat one another as you wish to be treated yourself

treat one another as you wish to be treated? Sort of like Jesus said we should do?

Sort of like every other religion says? Sort of like anybody with a conscience would think?
MrJBassPlayer 2 years ago
Except every other religion does *not* say that. And your "conscience" is firmly rooted in the morals and values of Western civilization, influenced by the Judeo-Christian bible and Greek philosophy.
Without a divine component, "morality" is simply what most people agree upon, what makes them feel good. In and of itself, morality has no value. It is something people made up.
I am *not* saying I believe that. I am a Theist :-D
Free country though, believe as you will. What's the harm? LOL

Find me actual proof Jesus said that.
Wait, actually, find me proof Jesus existed.
Then find me proof he was somebody I should give a shit about.
Then, find me proof he was the first person to say that.

Yes, the attachment therapy is hideous as is the HIV/AIDS denial, but most of what I read occurs in countries that are "third world" and, please forgive me, underdeveloped in understanding of scienctific findings in the medical field (among others \) and are only doing what was taught them for centuries. Im not a Christian, I just believe in God and thats how I am, one thing that always come to my mind is, I hear alot of atheist talk about how Christians have alot of hate towards them, thats not true, I think at rue person of God wouldnt hate atheist rather have passion for them, and if that person has hate they aint a true person of God ,Guarentee if you are atheist u went to my dads church n told them how you believed they would still welcome you and not judge u not sayin im right ur wrong to
masenkoboy 2 years ago 2
I'm Agnostic btw, but I still attend a Christian youth group, simply b/c I feel that I should understand what I'm arguing against.

explain something to me. if athiests beleive in nothing greater than their own existence, then why be so passionate about defending their beleif in nothing? they are ultimately just defending their own egos. if that's not pure arrogance, then tell me what it is.

Mr. Einstein also believed the universe was static, spite revealing that the universe is expanding in his calculation. Just goes to show that faith will constrict the thought of even the most genius of people.
MetalXeon 2 years ago
contrict thought? faith does the opposite. yes, the known matter in the universe is moving away from each other (expanding), but eintein imagined the space that contained the matter itself to be a static dimension. it takes a wildly free mind to come up with theories like this, or the theory of relativity, or the theory of splitting atoms, or the theory that God exists in a dimension the human mind cannot possibly conceive. read "fabric of the cosmos" by brian greene.

you see, you believe humans live a life of both joy and suffering, then die to become nothing, as if they have never existed at all. that means all our kids will die and become nothing, and our kids' kids will die and become nothing, and so on. and everyone who has ever lived is nothing.
well, if the past is nothing, and the future is nothing, then now is nothing. joy is nothing. suffering is nothing. everything is nothing.
so thank you. thank you for sharing your compassion for nothing.

ProudToBLoud 2 years ago

Because of this research behind natural healing methods like chiropractic and homeopathy is largely anecdotal
drummerid 2 years ago
Wow, people are taking advice from someone on Youtube?
See Drummerid, it's easy to dismiss something if you don't like it.
SliferDemon 2 years ago
tru tru my friend. You are absolutely right. Scientific research has to be funded. Who says how the research goes? the people who funded the research.
chiball66 2 years ago
i know, some people follow magicans as scientists, that is called voodoo.
but the randi crowd and their associates are not known for their self awareness, the quiet one was better, atleast he didn't talk shit.
ProudToBLoud 2 years ago
If they worked they could be researched scientifically and patented. Changing one non-essential molecule is enough to get you a new patent. Many medications we currently use are refined forms of so-called "natural remedies". Penicillin is a great example. What's more, good studies have been done on things like homeopathy, acupuncture, and chiropractice. The people who make money from those things don't like the results though. Basically you're talking out your ass is what I'm trying to say.
DNI12333 2 years ago
You obviously did not catch what I had said about research so let me clearly explain step by step.
1. Research must be funded.
2. "Natural Remedies" can not be patented.
3. Since they can't be patented a single company can not monopolize them.
4. Therefore there is little to no money invested in exploring the efficacy of natural remedies because the company doing the research can not monopolize the natural remedy.
Clearly you didn't understand me.
drummerid 2 years ago
Clearly you don't know where Penicillin and Aspirin come from. Natural remedies work in exactly the same way drugs do. Find out why the natural remedy works and you can make a drug. Both the aforementioned (extremely common) drugs were developed this way. If a company isolates and synthesizes the active ingredient first, you're god damn right they can patent it. So yes I understand you, it's just that you're a complete idiot who knows nothing about anything.
DNI12333 2 years ago
Actually I do know where both penicillin and Aspirin come from. The problem with isolating the active ingredients is that you seperate it from its naturally occuring components. I actually made aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid in one of my numerous chemistry classes. Acetylsalicylic acid is the active ingredient derived from white willow bark and has been used since the time of the ancient greeks. The patent process is what funds research and for natural remedies the research is not funded.
drummerid 2 years ago
The reason natural remedies are not funded is because natural remedies in their natural stated can NOT be patented and there for MONOPOLIZED by a money hungry company. There is no reason to get angry and resort to personal attacks. Even with the lack of funding there are several studies that show white willow bark to be a more effective therapy then the purified and artificial acetylsalicylic acid. Most of them occurring in Europe.
drummerid 2 years ago
So are you backing down from your idiotic claim that natural remedies "cannot be patented"? Also, what's wrong with removing the ACTIVE ingredient from its naturally occurring components? It seems to me that isolating the one part that actually does anything is a good idea. In any case, you simply can't argue with the results of real medicine. Life expectancy and quality are way, way up from the times when natural remedies were all we had.
DNI12333 2 years ago
Clearly you have no understanding of how the pharmaceutical patent process works.

Teganor 2 years ago
Too bad it claims to be more than FUN. It claims to be TRUE, opening itself up to verification attempts. It fails. That makes it bullshit.
planetdarwin 2 years ago
Scientology is merely a study too. An ology after a word doesnt make that thing credible.
The point of whatstheharm & this vid is that when people make decisions based on BS the the potential for harm exists. What if someone who takes astrology seriously decides not to get a life saving operation because they get a reading that tells them now isn't the time to be taking risks, things will be ok if you ride it out?
Bottom line is anything that claims to be true when it isnt can be harmful.
thenigotoffthebus 2 years ago
To the two that replied to me:
