glossed out shit? fuk off watch classic albums hysteria, they worked so hard to do that stuff it wasnt sell out it was something they were always working on, something they always planned to do wethere they got famous or not
It's interesting to see the de-evolution of DL over time. From pioneers in the NWOBHM to whatever the hell they do now. Consider that Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Venom, et al all came from basically the same place. Venom (always harder and more theatrical) stayed true to form, Maiden more or less became a caricature of themselves, and DL went from tunes like this to "Make Love Like A Man".
I recall reports that Joe Elliot does not like the first album. When they got Mutt Lange is when they got their path set. I am glad they recorded and released this stuff before he got that way! I like it all. Maybe it all got tainted because guitarist Pete Willis was not handling himself and the "excesses" on the road. When they snagged Phil Collen (from glam "Girl") that changed everything. Reminds me of Metallica's first years with Dave Mustaine...
The first 2 Lep albums were true rock albums. They were gritty raw and new. Everything from Pyromania on- pure pussy water rock. Sorry, over production Killed the animal that once was a hot rock band.
@mike1anderson no kidding this is my favorite song ever, no doubt. Love Hysteria but it just doesn't measure up to On Through the Night, record sales and charts don't matter. Agree?
Absolutely. It's worth noting, too, that if you listen to this song and some others on this album, you can totally hear the "England Metal" sound of the late 70's - very reminiscent of early Iron Maiden, and even some early Ozzy (like this song has elements that remind me of the middle part of Diary of a Madman, but obviously this was recorded first) - and even a bit of "thrash" before there really was such a thing. So ahead of their time here, you can hear where it all came from in the 80's.
Just goes to show, if something is really good, it'll outlast the little fads that pop up, get a ton of attention for a year, then fade away and are never heard of again. The good stuff'll go into hibernation for awhile but it always comes back. Just look at how it's suddenly cool to be a Def Lepp or GNR fan, where a few years ago you were the biggest dork if you wore a concert t-shirt to school. Rock's like the energizer bunny of music: it keeps going and going and going....
But because of Mutts influence,he wanted to start totally from scratch and go where no one had ever gone before, and he(they)did, like i said, all the B-songs and rest should have been Hysteria,The Desert song, ring of fire, ride into the sun,Fractured love,i wanna be your hero, she's too tough and then if you would have added Gods of war,Women,Hysteria, and Love bites, that would have been your Album,Talk about changing history, hmmmmm
Kinda strange huh,The Allom years brought out one style and the Mutt years brought out something else,Every little thing that happened totally changed what they were and what they became, willis gettin fired, clarkes death,R,allen losing his arm,,blah, blah,,But If you all think real hard, the biggest change was Hysteria,If you go back and look at the songs on Hysteria,it should have been a Totally different set of tunes,The Hysteria Album should have been the songs from Retroactive
Def Leppard also did not have much say on how that first album came out, it was mostly Allom's say....Also, I have to disagree with you on those two albums sounding similar, but we are all entitled to our own opinion.
Well, it's your opinion that both albums don't share a similar sound style. It's pretty obvious that they sound alike. There's alot of punk on both, and harmony.
I think you just don't want to see them paired up with bands like Black Sabbath. "Heavy metal" isn't always about leather and studded belts, but their (Def) first album riffs like it's 100% metal indeed.
Thank God that Allom (Judas Priest) produced it, it proves furthermore they WERE metal, just never really too interested in it.
You know, I have to point out that even with DL's first 2 albums, they never should have been lumped in with the NWOBHM.....Throwing Def leppard (even the early stuff) in with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest is like trying to lump The Backstreet Boys in with Metallica....Does not work....Def Leppard would have been a better fit with bands like Queen and Thin Lizzy....Definitely not NWOBHM....And just for the record, I like the new stuff just as much as the old stuff....DEF LEPPARD STILL ROCKS!!!!
Judas Priest never were NWOBHM;the era focused mainly with the young rock bands who reacted to punk in the late 70's, and that is why Def Leppard were NWOBHM, no matter how much they hate that.
Actually, Def Leppard's first album has similar sound to Iron Maiden's first album. Both are punk driven with melodic guitar playing and its no surprise. It's just that Def Leppard preferred to go pop.
Many NWOBHM bands were influenced by bands like Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple.
they are simply a great rock band that still rock your ass off. After Steve's death yes the music changed. It had to Steve is gone and so are his riffs, but is never forgotten. They still kick ass and always will !!!!!!!!!!!
You don't think Def Leppard are $ellouts? What about when they released 7 singles for one album, and 6 on the next?
The lyrics have since been glammified by the release of Hysteria, just look at all those syrupy love ballads they've done since then and you'll see what I mean.
Also, who names an album "The Songs From The SPARKLE Lounge"?
Fiasco, I mean it for what it is: a disappointment to rock music and a disgrace to heavy metal.
Sure, Def Leppard still plays rock, but w/ more pop.
You've been misinformed by the media (for years) Def have always said they are NOT a heavy metal band, does that help ya.... LOL.
Curious, what does Def Leppard owe you? If your not a fan of their music, that's your choice, and I disagree. They worked their azzez off for many years and are STILL TOGETHER! Those of us who "understand" what that means appreciate them even more. Thay are 50 years old now, and people write differently, think differently and I think they're still beautiful. Muah!
Just because they said they're not a heavy metal band does not exclude the fact that they were a part of the NWOBHM movement (as evident in their first album). Hard rock and heavy metal, there's really not that big of a difference here. These are just more highly-amplified forms of rock music and the "tight" rhythms is what makes something sound so heavy. Deafened Leopardization never really got into the whole denim & leather, but they were still up there as a classic metal band in the early 80s
These are the boys I fell in love with, who populated all my early teenage fantasies, whose sound was the soundtrack to my life ages 12-15. Def Leppard in their early days were brilliant. Seriously, if this was released today, they'd be hailed as fantastic hipster musicstars. It is a shame how Mutt Lange ruined them - turning them into a formulaic sound much like the other bands/stars he produced: AC/DC, Foreigner, Shania Twain (his wife).
By far the best song on this album. I've been looking for this for a while now. Thanks big time for posting. Used to listen to this while cruising all the time. Early Def is the best.True heart true ROCK
love this album and song my favorite song on the album thx for posting i was thinking same as you wth didnt anyone post it yet im planning on making a cover but omg no one knows this song and no one knows how to play it gotta learn it by ear but early def leppard is good guitar work ! keep the cover thing secret lol i wanna be first one hehehe

When Pete left Def Leppard, it went to $hit from there on. They lost there identity. Thanks to Muff Lang, he ruined them.
