My favourite argyle side of all time. mc call, dalton, barlow, nicholls, castle the list goes on. just really unlucky not to be promoted despite being 12 points ahead burnley who went up instead of the greens.
@tomtaylor1 Indeed, this was a great attacking Argyle side and certainly the best football i've seen at Home Park, but defensively we were weak. Comyn and Hill were ok defenders but they were not great. If only we had a top class centre half that season and conceded less we would have gone up automatically, without any doubt. Also, there was not enough defensive work done in training. Have you read Peter Shiltons nearly men?
Good to see the ground how it used to be too..Yes the ground is good the way it is now,but it is much the same as many other grounds.I think when they all differed it added to the atmosphere being more imposing for visiting teams.Home park is not the fortress it once was.
Great video, some great goals that season. This was my first season supporting the greens. To be fair, we never should have finnished in the play offs, we should have gone up automatically. I'll always remember those three consecutive defeats we had towards the end of the season (all against teams trying to stay up) that cost us dear. Had we just won one of those we would have gone up automatically and i believe, with this team and a few more signings, would have made the premier league.
Such happy memories - I've never had so much joy supporting Argyle as during this period. Paul Dalton tearing Wrexham to shreds was a particular highlight. And you can clearly see Alan Nicholls shouting "w*nker!" in the face of the Hartlepool player that scored their goal as we won 8-1.
That side was destined for such great things - such a shame it went wrong.
great football, forgot how good we were that year, shame about the burnley game. my highlight was doing the scum at there place 3-2 as i remember and i think we were 2-1 down. r.i.p alan nicholls
we were good that season, a skillful passing side not like the argyle of the naughties, paul dalton was magic steve castle scored from almost every free kick he took. lossing to a side that had only won 3 games away all season in the play-off fucked it all up, we were pish the season after.
You summed it up perfectly slaytanic 1. Fantastic season, and only my second supporting the greens. At their best they were an absolute joy to watch. Particularly remember them dismantling top-of-the-table Reading, sometime in March I believe. The Burnley game was a real kick in the wotsits, and getting relegated the next season was even worse. The last time I cried due to football! Glad to say I take it with slightly better humour these days....
Great memories...a bitter sweet season though. It kind of sums up Argyle that the best team we`ve ever had still failed to realise it`s promise and eventually imploded. That Burnley game will leave mental scars until my dying day!
