"People in [Cleveland's] inner circle knew, people at church knew," he said. "But they pretended it didn't exist. I guess what you don't see you can't say. But I can."
"No. He didn't die of heart failure--heart failure is just a delusion," Harris said, nearly laughing. Then he hesitated. "Let's just leave it at that."
Rev. James Cleveland. Allegedly, he was herding boys with fake youth orientated programs and he was partial to light skinned, curly haired boys. These boys were allegedly passed around. And the boy Cleveland adopted alleges that Cleveland infected him with the AIDS virus before dying.
@virgoice In the wake of his death, the awful stories began to surface. Stories about Cleveland’s penchant for young boys and men who ventured into his Gospel Music of America Workshops. Some of them came looking for sexual hookups. That’s what they had been told could be expected. Sadly, the foul spirit in James Cleveland, which was not the spirit of the Lord, maintains an active presence in the GMWA. Its dark influence is even more pronounced on the black gospel music industry.
@carmendecor.. None of us here has spirits that have not been touched by some element of foulness. The mere fact that you are spreading gossip that does nothing more than make a dead man look bad speaks about yours. So James Cleveland was not the first to fall short....the Black church is full of hatred and judegment that sometimes I wonder who yall are serving.
@virgoice Jet Magazine, post this court case and article back in the 90's along with Cleveland adopted son winning the CASE. Again, this young man had to suffer not Mr. Cleveland. Rev. Cleveland is a poor example of what church is past and present. People in [Cleveland's] inner circle knew, people at church knew," therefore he must had enough evidence to prove his case because he did WIN.
- yes, it's also clear that Pres. Obama is not yet governing in a manner that Dr. King could (at this point in Pres. Obama's tenure) support or endorse. Mr. Obma needs to have a comprehensive agenda for poor Americans in generals and poor Blacks and minority specifically. He doesn't seem to think that that is a priority for him unfortunately.
@hollyhoodjai: Yes, I'm aware that Bishop E. E. Cleveland, Sr. was Tramaine's g?randfather, as well as her mom's and nationally-recognized Bishop Ernestine Cleveland-Reems' dad. However, the question was whether Tramaine's related to the late Rev. James Cleveland, which she's not. But thanks for the comment.... I'm a HUGE Tramaine fan. :-)
Lady Tramaine and that angelic choir from heaven, wOw!!!!! What a combination. I listen to this song, in particular everyday, multiple times. In these difficult times it gives me a cushion against the blows of the world. It helps keep me centered and let God lead the way that I should go. Thanx. I think this is the very best version of this master piece.
Interesting tidbit: Reverend Cleveland also directed a girls' gospel group called "The Heavenly Tones" Tramaine sang with when she was just a kid. :-)
@evnglst Her Grandfather Name was Bishop E.E Cleveland. That's were Walter, and Edwin Hawkins went to church. As Pastor Cleveland started his own ministries Bishop E.E. Cleveland was his Mentor.
Wow... never saw a funeral like this before. Just shows through the help of God, Rev. Cleveland has influenced a massive group of Christian believers and singers. When God uses someone, he uses them all the way, beyond anyone's expectation. :)
@ettawy He died from AIDS in 1991. James Cleveland was a closet homosexual the worst of it was openly confirmed when Christopher Harris (Cleveland’s foster son) told a reporter that he and Cleveland carried on a sexual relationship for five years. Harris once went by the name Christopher Cleveland. That was before he filed suit against Cleveland’s estate and won alleging five years of sexual contact that ended with Harris testing positive for HIV.
Sylvia-Sylvia! Being a woman, you should know as women get older, the menopause thing, and in addition, when they have experienced some health problems, as Traimaine had been facing, the weight just comes on. Be blessed and hopefully this will escape you.
Contact the Reverend James Cleveland Trust. The lady is Annette May Thomas and she can get them for you. She serves at Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California.
Would you put the praise footage on here. I got the tape of Rev Clevelands funeral and after Tramaine finished singing they broke out in a shout!!!!!Rev Cleveland would of been proud!!! I mean they got down and did some sho-nuff foot service, I had to get up and shout myself!!!!It was so annointing!!!
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful Lord Thank You what shall i do Lord You are the answer to all my questions anyone who has ever chosen You they were winners Lord God Bless The World Lord
I remember as a child my dad playing songs by Reverend James Cleveland that for ever touched my life. One song he sang always stood out to me and that was "ordinary people" the song went on to say how little becomes much when you place it in the Master's hand! You know if we are faithful over the little things we will be ruler over many. Then tramaine blessed me singing about how she know the heavenly father Will come thru, we must learn to wait!(serve)! GLORY! Be blessed!
Reverend Cleveland's funeral was held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. I was blessed to attend the funeral service and the wake the evening before at Reverend's church.
I was blessed to be at both as well. I remember how we got there so early and when they opened the doors at the Shrine the people BOLTED THROUGH THERE and seven thousand seats were filled in MINUTES and NO ONE LEFT THERE SEAT.
Well, I was there in the choir, Los Angeles Gospel Messengers and mass choir, rending the music and it was hard to say goodbye to this King. I stood with Andre Crouch and Melvin Williams and all we could do was hug and cry together. I know what it means to Stand on the Banks.
I was so afraid that the lady at 4:22 was about to fall out.
Patrick Ellis/Jackie Gales Webb used to play this every Sunday on WHUR in D.C. I had been hearing it for years before I even knew that there was also the wonderful James Cleveland version.

This song was written and performed first by Los Angeles Gospel Messengers. Quincy Fielding and Bernard Rones were writers chosen as songwriters for Tramaine's album. The Los Angeles Gospel Messengers provided the background.
I heard she sang this at Sammy Davis Jr.'s funeral too. I'd love to see a live version of Rev. Cleveland performing it as well, one of my favorite recordings (when he talks about being rushed to Daniel Freeman Hospital).
Please, never remove this video it moves me so, I've listened over and over again
