Yea these moters were once very popular and still are. The only reson that there not in production anymore is the epa. The emissions are bad and most smoke like crazy. I suprised you never saw one in Canada. You will find them in anything from pre 90s semi trucks of all sizes to generators, pumps constructon equipment and on and on. Detriot still makes moters but they are all 4 stroke and epa compliant. They were made by g.m so alot of vids of GMC semi are on here so just type in 6-92 6-71 enjoy
@rocintrucker83021227 about the smoke, I heard a while back that a brand new MAN or MTU will smoke more than an old 8V92, according to a friend at the yacht basin
@SeaDollarsBertram I can belive that all this crap on clean air diesels is a joke There is no such thing as a clean diesel They can make them cleaner but they are ruining them They have this new additive called urea that injected into a burn chamber with the exshust. Its bien used in europe for years and now the epa is forcing it down on us Just another thing to fail and add cost to trucking which hurts us the consumer who reliey on trucks everyday I see alot of clean air trucks that still smoke

@8010cookie Are you from the UK? Detroits were built to run like that. Its a 2-stroke and they sound like there being killed but that is not much more than 2000rpm You got to run them high they dont have the lug power that a 4 stroke Cat or Cummins has. To the best of what I know Detroit was the only American engine builder that did a 2 stroke diesel They are a time tested succsess for durability and good fuel use They bien around since the 50s and many still run today Emissions was there death
Its odd how these 2 stroke diesels ( are they direct injection ?) sound so hard driven for the revs, but i suppose its just that thing of 2 stroke over 4 stroke..........there a piece of Ytube of a V8 Perkins which just sounds great, but is supposed to be gutless...........so who knows !
funny, u 3 probably dont know how to drive it. and why would he have to back out of a field when he is that far into a field? theres no point unless u just want to use more fuel.
I got a 1973 GM JH9500 w/8v71, 9513 over, 38's [4.44] on Reyco-- good solid truck but pretty light d/line- hauled lots dirt with it- noisy though and not easiest on fuel- engine was virtually unbreakable
I could listen to that all day long and never grow tired of the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit. This one sounds exactly like our tanker....well not exactly... most of the time in that pull out one of the drivers would have missed a gear or ground it (why they put a 10 speed Roadranger in a fire truck I will never know!). I love those old beastly Chevy C-90/GMC 9500 chassises too, I wish to God I could find one (with either the 6'71 or a 6'53).
My grandpa has one of this grain trucks. Those 2 stroke diesel engines sound like beasts. The sound scared the pants off of me when I was a kid. I love driving it and I am always looking at the tach. A 400-500 rpm range is all that type of engine has from idle to max rpm. Looks great and Sounds Great.
@calmatosport It sounds like it is revving so high, because this Detroit Diesel is a 2-stroke engine. The engine pistons combust air and fuel (has a powerstroke) eveytime the piston rises in the cylinder, where a 4 stroke engine combusts air and fuel ever other time the pistons rises. Look up 2-stroke cycle and 4 stroke cycle on YouTube for an animation.
oh the sound of a 238 (671) Screamin Jimmy i miss that sound everyday
My granddad bhogut a 74' 9500 GMC S/A Tractor w/ 671 (238) , 5&2 tranny 23k rear end & belly blower exhaust brand new i grew up w/ truck (i was born within a year of manufactering of jimmy) this was our lowboy tractor & also pulled wheat, soybeans , & corn to the elevator
this ole jimmy looks almost similar to one we had listing to your jimmy brings back some good memories for me thanks for the video
oh does your 671 "lope" on a cold morning till the motor warmed up ours did & if ya wasnt carefull oil would get on top of the pistons & "clatter" lol
Good sounding 238!

@8010cookie Actually it's a wonderful sound, detroits last longer when you run them hard. Much the opposite of many 4 cycle diesels

why is it revving so high? and why in neutral?
calmatosport 3 years ago
Max rpm is only 2400, it just sounds fast because it is a Detroit. The fast rev in neutral was to build air pressure because I was in a hurry.

yeah because he was in a hurry dummy lol
