  • One kicking band of the 60's and 70's, and even 80's....great songwriting and presentation by RB and RC! Some kicking drum licks too!

  • brings back memories....lol...love this song...

  • Perhaps younger people don't know this song yet, however i know it from one of the Austin Powers films.

  • desde que lo escuche por primera vez me parecio sensacional y ahora que he podido verlo me gusta mas.!

  • i hate justin bieber the little cunt, trying to take over this amazing music, he deserves to be burned untill he is half dead and fed to a group of lions!

  • @eclipsemoonlight Come on now don't hold back tell us show ya really feel!...LOL

  • Zorba discotec Costa Rica, años 70s, lindo, aunque era menor de edad...

  • muito massa essa musica

  • that guy is burton cummins he went on had a successful solo career, he does have a awesome voice

  • I never would've thought that raspy voice came from such a beatiful looking guy. Great song!

  • oh wow. Raelly good. Rock on.

  • HighMerican Woman.

I want you to know: I'm free White and 65 in the USA.

  • They put the fat fuck in the back and he plays a mean guitar!

  • i feel bad for people who cant appreciate both classic rock and modern music. there was shitty music back then too and the good music is always there, and it evolves.

  • just a good feel song :)

  • Not all modern day music sucks, kids just dont appreciate the fact that THEY WOULDNT HAVE todays music if it werent for groups like this...oh and Elvis <3 haha

  • @lesclaypool4thewin YOU TELL THOSE YOUNG'UNS< GRANDMA!!!

  • @goshawk1974 haha are you calling me old? because im 20...

  • @lesclaypool4thewin oh i'm so sorry, i missed badly on my comment. the elvis blast threw me off. my bad, LATE!!!

  • @goshawk1974 haha ok

  • Saw these guys in Los Angeles in the 60s...best concert ever (for that time). Stood the entire time...no one sat down. I still get the chills when I hear their music.

  • Guess Who? The Who? No Guess Who!

  • @TheWheeze100 Townsend's a "GAY"

  • the guy singin is burtun cummins for all you that don't know the guess who and yes it is bachman on guitar, bachman went on to form a second highly successful group B.T.O,left cummins in the dirt

  • @dictator54 You are right about Bachman, but that guy in this vid doesn't look anything like him. I'm guessing he left the band before this video. Guess Who were creating big sparks at this time... could have been even bigger if Bachman didn't split.

  • I'm American and this is still a great song

  • this era of music is way better than the crap of today

  • Sorry from Canada, but I think this makes up for Beiber.

  • @wmacisaac oh trust me it helps..... a lot... what a fucking kickass voice!

  • @wmacisaac It does.

  • @jmccullah Remember, it was the 60s, a lot of American youth were also strongly opposed to the Vietnam war, knew exactly what this meant, and agreed completely with its message.

  • Is that Randy Bachman on lead guitar (wearing the Winnipeg sweatshirt)? That man does not look like him, but people change. I remember when the Daniel Boone / Davey Crockett look was in, such was the case with the drummer.

  • @GreatWriteUp no randy quit before this was recorded

  • @sleepingincognito Randy Bachman did not leave until June of 1970, a month or so after American Woman hit the top of the charts in the US.

  • Burton Cummings wailed..... amazing

  • BROOOOS!!! I GOT THIS GREAT IDEA!!!! LET'S DROP TUNE THIS AND MAKE THE VOCALS SCREAMING INSTEAD! IT WILL BE SO ORIGINAL

  • The WOZ on drums, Jonah Hill on guitar, and Paula Poundstone on vocals? This could be the strangest supergroup of all time.

  • sexual energy .....ohhh

  • What is that, a Strat sustain through a Marshall. Sounds like Clapton on Disraeli Gears. Not the best guitarist but great tone,

  • Ah yes, the Canadian Robert Plant.

  • I love how the musicians are all in their own separate world, yet they bring it all together masterfully. Burt Cummings is almost pretty in this performance.

  • Don't get the line-up...Two bass players? Where's lead?

  • @irasamuelcohen

    Doesn't need a lead, dummy,

  • @irasamuelcohen theres only one bass player...the guy to the left is playing rhythm guitar, some kind of hollowbody looks like probably an epiphone, and the guy to the right of the drummer (behind the bass player) is playing a strat....he is the one playing the lead

  • The original is the best !

  • who is hypnosized to the billy idol, must say hes far more better than these wackers, do you think too

  • Screw off Lenny Kravitz! I love him as much as the next guy but this here is the real, pure, genuine, Shit!

  • ESTUPIDA PUBLICIDAD.

  • I'm really surprised how many exciting songs were in the 70s, but where are they all now? Does anyone know?

  • @The909stranger

unfortunately....most of them are dead...most from drugs. but,... IT WAS AN OUT OF SITE TIME IN MUSIC WHILE IT LASTED!! **laughin**

  • @APACHEFIRE1 Totally agree with you.

  • this is what i call music!!!!! fantastic

  • He has always reminded me of Robert Plant for some reason lol

  • I agree, Burton Cummings is definitely one of the best singers in rock n roll history. You can tell he meant (and felt) every lyric he sang.

  • This man never got mentioned in Rolling Stones 100 greatest singers of all time....I mean really??? There's 100 better singers in rock than Burton Cummings???.....I don't think so....I don't thnk there's five...

  • @hotmn4u it just depends on who you ask

  • haha 10 dislikes xD

  • Randy Bachman was gone by this point. That's Kurt Winter in the back. Burton looks kinda loaded. Probably was...

  • These guys were the Justin Biebers of their day: Canadians going around getting American women pregnant.

  • winnioeg represent

  • I'm doing history homework, and all its talking about is this song right now, and how The Guess Who made it about how American Culture took over the Canadian Culture -.-

  • what is original anymore?

  • hell ya our fellow Canadian made this song!!!

  • This song wasn't about an "American Woman." It was about American Rock and Roll and how it swept over the world so fast and strong that people had become greedy for the American lifestyle. It has NOTHING to do with an actual American Woman.

  • @madguitarman0000 That's right. They sing "I don't need your war machines, I don't need your ghetto scenes...". This surely is a statement against the American foreign and economic policy of the era, coming from a Canadian group enjoying universal free health care and a foreign policy that kept them out of the Vietnam war. The idea of the "American woman" being rejected is a METAPHOR (metonomy, actually, but let's not be technical).

  • jesbeard---That's cool what you said about the groupies. Hard to believe a Canadian would be telling groupies to stay away from them though....lol. Take it easy.

  • i just went on a groooovy trip listening to this song :)

  • for all you american women, winnipeg is a city in manitoba, canada ;)

  • LESBIAN WOMAN! stay away from mee!

  • Why don't we have cool bands like this today. I love this guy's voice. It rocks but he does not try to sound like a screamin Demon.

  • @computarman Megadeth, Megadeth aguante Megadeth XD

  • Me encanta esta versión sesentera . 60's la decada prodigiosa.

  • Meant to say the guy was hilarious in that last quote. By the way, no offense to our American neighbors meant by the comment. Glad to have you as neighbors. Cheers!

  • I actually got a chance to talk to Cummings at a bar he played solo back in the nineties when I worked the door there. The girl was f%cking hilarious.Watch an interview with him and he could have been a standup comedian. Signed a few things for me then thanked me if you can imagine. They were definitely our best rock band from Canada. Somebody hit it right on the nose with the Statue of Liberty being the woman. According to him, it was a symbol for everything they disliked about the USA.

  • @BigRobArnold More than that. They effectively wrote the song when they were all on stage essentially doing a sound-check during a tour and Cummings was making fun of some American groupies who were crowding the stage. He was telling them what you hear in the song, singing it to them, and the others in the band joined in and effectively improved much of it. Afterwards they decided they had the makings of a song and fleshed it out.

  • That isn't Bachman on the strat is it?

  • @chadworthman No it isn`t Randy Bachman. He had left the Guess Who by then and gone on to start his own band Bachman Turner Overdrive. Thank god he did too because we ended up with two outstanding Canadian rock bands. Actually i preferred the Guess Who`s later hits like ``Heartbroken Bopper`` and BTO`s heavier sounds like their tune ``Second Hand``.

  • @BBINGHAM032352 No. Bachman left in May of 1970, and American Woman was released in January of that year.

  • this shit sounds like black sabbath baked for some reason. or maybe something new fuck iunno. hahahahahahahaaha

  • Who is the American woman..............The Statue of Liberty!

  • @TheHookedX American Woman a symbol for the American entertainment industry. They must got some poor record deals or something at the time.

  • mark emery?

  • haha Jesus on the Rhythm Guitar!!

  • He says "goodbye american chick"..........

  • The Guess Who are from Canada.

  • @vobo8998 and Forigner

  • I love Burton's hair, he's such a bad ass!

  • I was a GI who had just been dumped by an anti-war fiancee at Michigan State.....on my way to my new duty station in the Philippines. Didn't miss her much.

  • A great song no doubt. And while you can't here it at the end of this video, if you listen very carefully at the end of the song on a CD or iTunes you can hear him say: "Good bye Am. woman, good bye American shit." It's barely audible but if you listen closely you can hear it. I had the album waaay back when this song came out and I would hear that line at the end and always wondered why someone would sing words like that. As I got older I learned that most Canadians don't like the U.S.

  • The psycho slut is spreading her big fat legs around Canada.

    Tamp that hooker.

  • These guys are from my hometown. Go Winnipeg! Go Guess Who!

  • It is better than Lenny Kravitz

  • Krocus did American Women too..

  • @turnerkatrina8 Umm, WAY!

  • @turnerkatrina8 Nothing against Lenny K. but these guys ARE the originals...and nobody can sing it like them.

  • guess what! that fu.....in great rock music!!!!

  • Kool Song always reminds me of Vanishing point with the hot naked Chick on the motor bike.

  • @koolheadpig In fact this is so kool i miss took this song for Mississippi Queen That is in Vanishing point oops !

  • he sounds a lot like Robert Plant

  • Wow, he sounds perfect live

  • Best ever Canadian rock band there ever was!!!! Long live The Guess Who!!!! nobody ever sang this song like Burton Cummings period!!!!!

  • I can see Images of Lester Burnham running down the street in American Beauty!

  • interesting ...bass player up front, lead guitar in back. thanks for sharing

  • Maybe they should have inserted Islamic for American.

  • irony?...this song came on just when i came out the immigration office with my citizenship card........eeerily...eerie....can you believe it?

    but i looooovvveeee this song....burton cummings ......

  • guitarist looks like jonah hill

  • Mientras ustedes escuchaban a Cepillin, yo me chutaba estas rolas

  • huuuummm, wonder what Eric Burden and the Animals would have done with this one? Would have been interesting.

  • Lenny Kravitz is talented yes, but NOTHING compares to riding home from school with my dad while we blast this version over the radio. Long fuckin live rock n roll <3

  • @TheBeefyWizard35 amen to that !!!

  • @TheBeefyWizard35 man fuck lenny, what did he make? A sterilized dumbed down version of this song. This version is dirty, it's nasty, the guitar is gritty and ugly, the voice is harsh on the fuckin' ear... it sends a clear message, BITCH, FUCK OFF.

  • lk does it better

  • One of my favorite tune of all time.

  • the original is always better

  • Oh Yah baby.. it's the ultimate version.

  • the guess who .... ¡

  • is it me or does burton cummings LOOK LIKE IAN GILLAN OF DEEP PURPLE!!! OHH FUCK YEA THERES ANOTHER GOOD ONE! I LOVE IT WHEN MY MEMORY JOGS ANOTHER GREAT BAND LOOSE!!!! WHOA YEAH!!!

  • Randy? Randy? I can hear you but I can't see you.

  • Burton Cummings says this song was intended to be a protest against American policy towards Vietnam AND the influence of American culture on Canada and Canadians' views of the wprld. Ironically, it was originally recorded at RCA's studios in Chicago....

  • I'm so stupid. Been trying to find this song for years but thought it was led zeppelin; all i kept getting was the guess who n i dint even bother checking them out. Dumbass. BTW great song n great performance

  • LoL, listen to Running back to Saskatoon.

  • As a woman of the 2011's, American Woman is a statue of the corporate entities who stole all the working middle class of their hard earned money.---- a-holes I hope they rot.

  • Classic song made but because on a broken guitar string. Got to love it.

Live. Broke a string. Tunning his guitar he started playing. Soon the bass player joined. Then the drummer. They crowd was going crazy. They told Burton to say anything.

So he just made it up.

Yup classic song broke of a guitar string:P

  • As I recall the American Women is the “Statue of Liberty”

  • proud! Canadians all be aware!

  • this is how this band should have remained. raw long hair ubtouched by corporate entities. thier mucis changed some later on when they cleaned up for a better image. the best music they made was early on without outside influences. still one of the best bands of all time. to appreciate thier greatness you had to live it not just hear it. i am lucky to have done so.

  • Burton Cummings said they made that song up on the spot. The band was playing the rythym while waiting for him and when he got back on stage he just started singing those words. One of their greatest hits.

  • Epollogula34:They aren't American thats why.They're Canadian.

  • WHY AN AMERICAN BAND SINGS AGAINTS AMERICAN WOMEN; ARE AMERICAN WOMEN REALLY MEAN?

  • @ELPOLLOGULA34 the guess who are canadian, not american!

  • See

  • Whating from the backseat, the bitch sure is taking us on a trip.

  • Fucking legends!!!

  • I love the whole meaning to this song.

  • Super

  • Randy Bachman was so good, it took two guys to replace him.

  • Funny how he just stands there, seemingly bored... Burton Cummings..

  • con esta rola me chinge a la primera morrita que conoci ;) q buenos recuerdos

  • I think an American band should go over to Canada and sing a song that goes..."Canadian women...stay away from me..."

  • @ladybluluv - they could but it would never be as good.

  • buena rola!!!

  • An old boyfriend knew these guys in Canada, this song was written for me his "American Woman"

  • @1951590 i'm sure that is a lie

  • Video made before lip syncing became the cardinal sin of music performance. I freakin LOVE this.

  • kevin spacey says this is kaiser sosay

  • Is that Burton Cummings out front on lead vocal?

  • @epgrove1961 Yes.

  • @epgrove1961 no, its ed trololo

  • can anyone find any video lesson on this song using the bass guitars?

  • buen@soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • This man SUPER TALENTED VOCALIST/COMPOSER

  • Back when music was music. I'm 27 and I'll take this over Justin Bieber and Kanye West anyday. Screw today's radio

  • when musc was music no studio remixing live or album they sounded the same ,unlike todays music all computer enhanced for album
