I can see where people would have problems...but I think what should do is a percentage of Redskins merchandise sold should go to a Native American charity.

I agree wholeheartedly with Plaschke. And while we're at it, can we please make the Cleveland Indians get rid of Chief Wahoo as that is really offensive. The nickame "Indians" is fine since it's not derrogatory, but the symbol that represents is it reprensible and should be done with. I live in California and the irony here is that Governor Schwarzenegger, an immigrant, vetoed a state bill that would ban any Native American nicknames.

While the idea of a team being named after someone is complementary (Like the Trojans or the Seminoles) the name Redskin is a very derogative comment that comes from something absolutely terrible.
It would be like an Atlanta team calling themselves the Atlanta N---ers. Yes you have a team named after you, but its not exactly the most positive of names.

They were originally the Boston Braves, like many football teams that started out in the 20's and 30's they named themselves after the baseball team. They played in the same stadium as the Braves baseball team. When they had a falling out, the football team moved to Fenway Park with the Red Sox. They were no longer associated with the Braves but now with the Red Sox. In keeping with the native theme and with a nod to the Sox they became the Redskins. And in the 30's that was a compliment.

Also, living on a rez and being a rez indian is a lot different than an urban (off the rez) indian, who usually don't know shit about tribe and ppl.
That said, I do know a decent amount of natives around my rez who don't mind the name and even though I wouldn't mind seeing it change, it's not a big deal to me. What I think is a big deal is how ignorant and callous some ppl are being over this issue.

I think it's funny that some ppl on here are saying that they're 1/8 or 1/6 native and that the name doesn't offend them. If you were really a native you'd know that the 1 drop theory doesn't mean shit to us. You need to be at least a 1/4 to be considered a Native and then you need to be officially recognized as a native of a tribe with legal documents showing your blood degree and family tree.
