This performance is a far cry from another video of the same song that was dated 1988. Kind of going through the motions it seems. Girl gained some lbs. and the dudes all lost some hair.
@JefeJeffAlmanza Yes. The 1988 song is so fresh. The drummer is totally into this, though, he helps keep it all together. Along with the guitarist.
Black Francis and Kim Deal did not get on together, apparently. Hence going through the motions. Thankfully they have not sullied their heritage by releasing sloppy going through the motions new stuff. all the best!
When you're 20, no kids, life stretching out in front f you, its easy and lamost required to be judgemental assholes. Kim Deal was the only one I think who was financially solvent at the time of the reunion and did it to make money for Joey and Dave in particular. I don;t see that as selling out. I see it as maturity and its really moving to see them as adults, clean, sober, and making some money for those reasons. I loved seeing them again, hope to see them a few more times yet.
I caught them at Victoria hall in "91",just after the Bossanova release, and they were Amazing,I do agree, its sad to see them get older,But it happens to everyone.
But as long as there's money to be made,Fuckin milk it!!!!!
Just an opinion, and I still have huge respect for the Pixies contributions which are immense, but I believe that the within that change of attitude lies the reason they can't write any new, ground breaking tunes.
To write truly orignal and great music takes passion and a belief in something. When you lose that -> the fresh ideas disappear.
@ch1nmuzak I completely agree with you. When you are The Pixies there's no proving ground anymore. go out and do a reunion and fuck it if you want to make a buck go ahead. People who bitch about money hungry musicians need to get off their ass because they're late to their shift at the car wash. It's a homeless road to the top i'm sure. Just saw them in St. Paul and you could tell they were having fun and had, "passion" for what they have created throughout the years.
Most morbidly obese people sweat constantly -- even in cool weather -- blubber is nature's best insulator. On the other hand, ex-junkies are forever feeling chilled, even at normal room temp. It the battle of fat v. drugs.
Their voices have deteriorated over time admittedly. Frank can't sing as high now. Plus, you've gotta take in the time they've been on stage. They're all shattered and exchausted
Their voices haven't deteriorated. They're only in their 40s. Voices change (not so many high notes, like you said), but they won't start to "deteriorate" for years yet.
You didn't hurt my feelings; you just made yourself look like a cynical, negative cunt. I don't care why they're touring, and why the hell should you, either? Does it hurt your feelings?
Hey. im travellling from the shetland isles to see the fantastic pixies in glasgow, i hate the negative comments on here, why are they watching?..the music is amazing, as always!!
@MrSloika I actaully agree with both this dude, whose comments about Thompson's hypocrisy have been so voted down he's been hidden, and those saying they are glad the Pixies did re-union. I love the Pixies, best band in 20 years. As a fan, I' m glad they re-united . So youner, new fans get a shot. But there is no doubt its hypocritical. A young Black would have scoffed at himself and the $ grab. Not half as passionate live now. May still be tight, but often look disinterested and it shows thru
@ch1nmuzak Thanks. My main complaint isn't that they've gotten older and lost their voices and youthful energy, that happens to everyone. It's the hypocrisy of it. No new material and a dull paint by the numbers stage show. It's a blatant, in your face, money grab. They are now the very thing they use to make fun of. When the Sex Pistols reunited in 1996, they were honest enough to call it the Filthy Lucre Tour.
I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, fan-boy, but it's true. The only reason they are back out on tour is because it pays well, otherwise they wouldn't give a fuck. Fat Franks admits as much in his latest Rolling Stone interview. It's all about the cash.
"We were kinda hesitant. We're a little sensitive about milking the reunion thing to death. We don't want to be seen as taking advantage of all the good will. At the same time, we are in show business and it is our right to go play "
MrSloika, what's your problem? The Pixies put on great shows even today, and I doubt many concertgoers feel they are robbed. Have you seen some of the bands today and their half-assed shows? I for one am grateful the Pixies came back to let new fans see what they missed in the 90s. The Rolling Stones milked the public with their dozen reunion tours and thousand dollar ticket prices. These are just guys who do what they love and do well.
Speaking of half-assed shows, Thompson shows almost no enthusiasm on stage these days. Deal looks like she can barely function. Both look like they are in a competition to become the blobs that ate alt-rock, and their ticket prices increase proportionately with their ass sizes.
The bass sound is awesome in this recording. And her voice ... I think its just Black Francis who don't sings the high harmonics. Maybe she's also a bit sick on this tour, because on other performances she still sounds great!
Oh come one, I'm a big big big biiiiig Pixies fan, but you can't downvote people because they say her voice is way off in this recording. It's pretty obvious, no? -.-
wow!! Comparing this to earlier versions this doesn't stack up, Kim is singing really flat on the chorus and Frank isn't even there with his harmonies most of the time. The Pixies are still great but it really shows what years of hard drugs, booze, and in-fighting can do to a band.
ye, back in the day they had some seriously good live performances, there is the legendary brixton academy show (most of it is uploaded to youtube by one einzack), but nonetheless, even those aren't quite as good as the studio albums. if only for the petty reason that nothing is...
A great song and one of the best basslines ever! Actually, I think it's the best Pixies song except "Debaser". And you can tell by Kim's voice that she's a nice person. To have such a sweet childish voice in her age - she must be doing something right!
I just fucking love this band so much.
