  • Wouldn't police already be aware of the observer effect? Doesn't take a Ph. D. mathematician to know that.

  • I have seen all of numbers episodes, 3 TIMES !!!

  • LOL :D

  • the uncertainty applies to the quantum world ppl are on the macro scale it doesnt apply to them -.-

  • Nothing to do with the case. It's the same as that other movie that uses the uncertainty principle observed in the electron to state that anything is possible.

    Non sequitur.

  • Wow, that was a pathetic attempt at involving maths with crime.

  • Do the writers of the show think the audience is stupid? I found this clip insulting- Heisenberg's uncertainty principle has been completely misrepresented. Simply stated, the uncertainty principle says one can either precisely know the momentum or position of a sub-atomic particle, but not both. It's too bad the writers were too lazy to check even wikipedia before writing this nonsense. It seems mainstream media believes its audience is stupid- this garbage wouldn't exist otherwise.

  • @guralp08 Check again, your right with your statement. But they are right too.

Heisenbergs principle of uncertainty describes more than that what you said.

  • Give me some wine with this Cheese.

  • Okay, let's assume that average adult is aware that you can't use maths to solve crime, it's simply an entertaining premise. The show did go downhill a bit after they ran out of clever ideas but at least it showed the relevance of mathematics to everyday problems. Yes, the explanation is dumbed down, what of it, it's a tv show.

  • their is an actual psychological principle that fits the description of this about observing someone and how it affects them, maybe they should've gone with that.

  • @Unclesamslair

"their is an actual psychological principle that fits the description of this about observing someone and how it affects them, maybe they should've gone with that."

do u know what it is? i've actually been wondering about that a few months ago, the only thing i came across was "self monitoring" which i didnt think exactly fit the whole idea of "ppl-who-are-monitored-act-differently". if u know of the concept i'd be gald to find out!

  • @wirechair It's called the Hawthorne effect.

  • @Unclesamslair

thank you. i'll look into it.

  • ...Quantum mechanics can solve murders now? Who woulda thunk it?

I hope people don't actually think that the math/science in this show makes any sense... :-/

  • This show is not meant to be watched by neither mathematicians nor physicists. That was a total irrelevant analogy. Fundamental physical principles are not related to psychology. Oh and by the way I always look at what is written on the blackboards on the background and there is some ridiculous stuff on there sometimes. I even saw 1+1=2 one time. Hahaha they must be running out of ideas. lol.

  • This is totally absurd. The uncertainty principle is a statement about non-commuting Hermitian operators on Hilbert spaces. The writers of the show are conflating the uncertainty principle and the so-called observer effect. This is very basic quantum theory; these writers clearly didn't conduct even rudimentary research. What a terrible television show.

  • @lightningrad

Hey where did you learn that?

  • @TheDSHagi

I learned it in a quantum mechanics course at a university.

  • @lightningrad - yea mate, tell me about it. since when does wave-particle duality help you decide where a criminal is going to hit next? ludicrous, yes...but highly entertaining, no?

  • wtf, the initial part made absolutely no sense, just putting together a bunch of science terms

  • there is no connection. This show has bad problem of fishing for similarities between math and the case, regardless of how much it actually applies.

  • for a concept that's easily misconstrued, this isn't a bad description of the Uncertainty Principle...maybe i should start watching this haha

  • Can you add this whole episode? Please!!!

  • Can anyone add the whole episode? or just the gun fight scene.

    Please.

  • Charlie looks so young here!

  • yeah he looks better with his shorter hair

  • Yeah.

  • hey add me yur a fan of Numb3rs right? jst reply on my profile.. btw do u lyk amita?

  • Yup. definitely a fan. sure, invite accepted :P Amita's okay, yeah. u?

  • yeah she sometym pisses me off but yeah sghe okay i guess hahaha let's not use the comment page 4 d video to chat jst reply n chat on our profiles

  • Lol, kinda weird they try to explain a psychological effect or change with a physical law... but ya.. The show's awsome, and even though it might not make much sense here... everything they say is correct (there is actually a site where they explain the math background of numbers.. u should check it out if u're interested)

  • LMAO made no sense

  • when the agent watched the robbers, he did not change the robbery only the aftermath of it. this principle does not always apply. it's the measuring device that can change things but only if the object is attracted to the device. if i measure a cup of sugar, i don't change anything.

  • I can't believe it. They interpreted the principle absolutely right. Relating it to observing criminals was just pure BS.

  • I just love Numb3rs <3

  • omg, would you guys stop fighting? jeez. anyways...

i love this show. i think its really cool. charlie is amazing. i feel so bad for him in this episode. i mean, he feels responsible for a lot of people dying.

  • OMG is it that big of a deal? geez they do have consultants for the show for a reason guys, don't pitch a fit just because it's wrong, that 's why it 's a TV show. -_-

  • That was pointless. Observing a robber and shining one quantum of light on a particle are unrelated things. But I do give the show credit because it introduces fundamental laws of physics.

  • omg. this guy doesnt know anything. thats not the uncertainty priciple in any way. its the common error saying that when u look at the particle u change its properties. This is actualy the observer effect or somthin like that.

The real deal is that the heisenbergs priciple is just like a background noise. When its applied you cannot predict exactly what will become, you can just predict what will happen. The situation becomes statistical.

  • why is this comment rated negative? Is this explanation of the principle correct or not?

  • Well, yes they did. Everthing in the Universe has wave-particle duality :p

  • this show is asinine, trying to draw connections between the uncertainty principle and human behaviour. This show along with CSI reduces complex situations into a happy solution while making enormous assumptions that are seldom tested. Absolute rubbish!

  • STOP BITCHING

  • STOP BITCHING ABOUT BITCHING

  • yay for heisenburg! did the robbers have wave-particle duality too?
