People who will tell you that their lives are richly improved with the help of the 12 Step Programme. People who have managed to turn themselves around to find a life that is uplifting, fulfilling, happy, productive & creative.

I struggle to see how it can be a 'cult' when people are encouraged to develop their own beliefs & spirituality, they are free to come or leave as they wish. There are no requirements at all from the people who attend and one can believe whatever it is you wish. Doesn't seem like a cult to me.

Churches all around the globe (most of which fit the description of a cult) are not so lenient and in my experience are far more judgemental, controlling & harmful.

If we were all inclined to look within for some sort of connection with something bigger than ourselves & assessed our own behaviour each day to see if we have behaved in a kind, ethical & loving way towards all - the world might well be a more pleasant place

i'm a gnostic & won't go into that here. the fundamentalists r somewhat silly. i refuse to defend gnosis. i only bring it up because aa has totally lost the effectiveness it may once have had & i'm not an atheist or agnostic. i think G_d cares how we treat others & doesn't give a rat's ass about theology in comparison. that's my trip, doesn't have 2b urs. but aa is def. hopeless in every sense.

-They don't say you have to follow blindly; AA does caution that, if you are an alcoholic of the hopeless sort, you will likely wind up in "jail, institutions, or death". Which is true.
