Holy cow! Your Dad had the capsules close on him and his crew? That only happened a few times, and not always with a happy ending. Brave to stay with the aircraft! Thank your Dad for me for his service.
@eatmenarf1 I know, right? I was shocked at how claustrophobic the cockpit was...and the capsule was even smaller. My Dad is rather tall...it was a tight fit for him.
I've seen this particular aircraft twice at the SAC museum, though the last time was way back in '03. It's nice to get a look inside the cockpit. A very tight fit. Thanks for the vid.
The B-58 was one of the first (if not THE first) to have a voice-synthesis alert system. It would be interesting to put some current through those old circuits and see if it was possible to download that program somehow to hear what the voice sounded like.
@MiHiVidz I read these comments to my Dad over Thanksgiving, and he said that the synthesized voice was female...the theory behind that was in an all-male crew, a female voice would make 'em all sit up and take notice. Sometimes she would border on the irritating...as when the fuel level dropped below a certain point, she would chime in over and over "Fuel level is below nominal" (I'll confirm exact wording with Dad...he was VERY specific about that particular phrase...heh)
@hera2511 The female voice became known as "Bitching Betty" due to her persistant and nagging reminders and warnings. The theory behind using a female voice is correct. Oddly many commercial airliners use a male voice.
@ozsasin glad you liked the video, and I agree, my responses are irritating...didn't plan on posting this on the web, but my brother wanted to view. I'll try and be more professional next time!
Very interesting! In my youth B-58's were based, near my home, at Clinton County AFB and I have been curious about them for a long time. Thanks for the post.
Great video. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Please tell your dad thank you for his service during those uncertain times.

He's a hero in my opinion and that's one of my favorite bombers. Wish it was the polished ones but that's probably hard to keep up with.

@yzmaximus I agree...being allowed to stand so close to one was a real treat. Thank you for the kind words about my Dad.

Thank you very much for posting this. Very informative. The B-58 is definitely one of the most interesting cold war era bombers.

@bigbeaverbill that must have been wonderful to see them flying overhead. Did you get to go see them takeoff or land?

After seeing the Vulcan the Brits put back in the air, I can't help but wish we could get one of these to Pima and put her back in the sky.
