  • It was always said that Maggie never got any of Groucho's jokes. However, on this telecast, she starts laughing in a couple of spots. Either the whole "not understanding any of the humor" was a myth, or it took her almost 40 years to finally get the jokes! Nevertheless, a wonderful moment and a perfect conclusion to Miss Dumont's career.

  • whoa... thats a great commercial at the end, lol

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Reading "Hello, I Must Be Going" (an enjoyable read about Groucho's final years) and had to see if this was on youtube. Notice how the audience applause sounds like it is "topped up" with a laugh track?!

  • Margaret Dumont passed away between tape and air. Miss Dumont died March 10,

1965 and this episode aired on ABC on April 10, 1965. According to Groucho,

she stood at the stage door with a bunch of roses in her arms regal as ever.

  • Margaret Dumont passed away in fact the very next day after this performance (heart attack). It's fortunate that she graced us with one last performance!

  • I took some pictures of the native girls there, but they weren't developed. XDDD

  • Margaret, you were the greatest straight 'man' ever and the luckiest person in the world to be Groucho's foil.

  • I'm smiling. That's all

  • Margaret Dumont was such a great straight man - what a find by the Marx Brothers!

  • Groucho was the best and Margaret Dumont was his best partner ever, thanks for posting this classic.

  • This was taped on March 03, 1965 - Margaret Dumont died of a heart attack 3 days after this was filmed on March 6, 1965. This aired on ABC on April 17, 1965, a month and a half after Margaret Dumont died.

RIP Groucho and Margaret - You made me laugh today.

  • I think that it is interesting that Edie Adams is doing a Murel ad when The Ernie Kovacs show was hosted by Dutch Masters.

  • @madtv99::::Dutch Masters and Muriel were both owned by Consolidated Cigar Company at the time.

  • This was originally telecast on April 17, 1965 (taped on March 3rd), because Pat Boone was indeed the next "headliner" on April 24th [8:59].

  • Wow Stan Getz in a commercial!

  • Now that's some classic TV. Thanks for the clip.

  • This classic sketch of Capt. Spaulding on The Hollywood Palace on March 3,1965. marks the final appearance of Margret Dumont, who co-starred in many of The Marx Bros. comedy classics of the 30's & 40's. Groucho Marx lived another 12 years until 1977. Great classic moment that will live with us forever.

  • i saw an interview with groucho and he said he felt bad for Margret Dumount. When he arrived to do the show she was at the stage door with a bouquet of flowers in her arms (he thought that she had bought them and sent them to herself). She thought she was a big star at the time, even though she had been forgotten about. Its so sad to think the life that she had loved, had left her.

  • Margaret was the quintessential Victorian lady. her nobility was the perfect counter to groucho's vaudevillian background. show me a modern duo that can match their charisma.

  • It's great Groucho and Margaret got together this last time. I've never seen this. Magaret looks spry here, how did she die?

  • @MisterMasterShafter

Maggie died of heart attack,I hear.

  • Thanks, Baron. I found that later at Wiki, but just the same, thanks.

  • I wonder if the brunette dancer with the glasses could be Yvonne Craig? Wasn't she a dancer before she joined the cast of "Batman"?

  • @rldavis1959 She's mighty cute whoever she is.

  • @TheWhisperOaks:::::If you are talking about the young lady introducing the scene, that was Groucho's daughter Melinda. The pretty girl in the cigar commercial was Edie Adams, Ernie Kovacs' wife.

  • Thanks you very much for posting. This was a real treat to watch.

  • "I think tjis dame's a wino!" ROFLMAO!!!!

  • When Dick Cavett interviewed Groucho in the early 70's, Groucho stated that Margret was somewhat oblivious to his jokes and that's what made her a great straight to his "off the cuff" quips. They were great together.

  • Sad that Miss Dumont passed away only a few days later, but she went out doing what she loved to the end, and obviously was having a wonderful time working with Groucho again! This is such a special video. Thank you so much for posting!!

  • @wickedcoolally According to Bill Marx, Margeret once said she felt like the Marx brothers ruined her career because she was always type cast and couldn't get any other parts. She also never got their jokes, but she seemed very fond of them and them of her, so I don't think she really resented them or anything.

  • Amazing...to think she was dead just four days later...(on March 6th, at age 82, btw...)

  • Here are the particulars of this show.

It was first aired on ABC on April 10th, 1965.

It was originally taped on March 2nd, 1965.

Miss Dumont passed away on March 4th of that year. She was listed as 81 years old at the time.

Groucho was 75 years old at this taping.

  • I estimate that Melinda Marx is now 62 years old.

  • That's pretty amazing..... Groucho and Miss Dumont are just GREAT in this, in spite of their ages they were sharp as tacks - - and funny!!

  • Groucho is immortal!

  • Mag is totally the bomb, far and away the best character actress in movie history.

  • I saw this when I was a kid, when I didn't know that much about Groucho, and have always wanted to to see it again. Thanks for the posting!

  • I've been waiting since I was 14 to see this (I'm now 37!!) Thank you so much1

  • When Groucho introduced Lydia someone or other in the last clip, I was hoping he'd launch into Lydia the Tattooed Lady... but this was classic.

  • 35 years after the movie version of Animal Crackers, and they still could do the lines without missing a beat. Maggie really was Mrs. Rittenhouse to the very end.

  • Thanx for posting. I had heard of this broadcast but never saw it until now. Great TV.

  • 1965 -- you have to admire Margaret Dumont's courage to be Groucho Marx's straight man again one last time. They still have that comic chemistry, even if he was walking all over HER lines.

  • She died two days after this was taped.

  • GREAT! I have never seen this. It was neat to hear some of the "updated" jokes...like the wild boar one...I saw that coming a mile off.

  • thanks for adding this!

  • Margret Dumont's last appearance
