I really liked this song but all in all I did not care for the LP at all. Aside from this track and the lead song, I found Minstrel in the Gallery very weak. Later I see that it is an artistic and poetic work in the vein of Aqualung and Thick as a Brick (two albums I really love) but Minstel never did anything for. The following albums were much better....
5:04 Yeah man, thats it! Love that moment to death, this song might be overlong but it has some awesome moments right there. Many beautiful and rocking moments to be found throughout
Why is there two dislikes? Also, why is there only a little over 38,000 views after more than two years of this posted? Maybe people are unaware of this tune being on YouTube or most people have poor taste.
After a couple of years listening to Tull I stumbled on this song back in 1985 and improved my listening capacities to a higher level. A milestone in my musical life.
15 yrs. old. And a huge Tull fan, I've known their music since I was just a kid thanks to my dad who has seen Tull live more than 8 time. They are the only band that never gets old for me, and always bring me memories from haning out with my dad when I was younger.
@raidernation173 Great band. I saw them in Honolulu back in about 1971 and they are to this day the best live performers I have ever seen. I've seen scores of artists live...No one close to these guys.
@Aash1999 "Disclude Black Satin Dancer" you say?- - - Would you disclude Locomotive Breath from Aqualung?....or Queen and Country from Warchild? I am glad it's there. Think of it as Ians' way of throwing in one of his surprises like in other songs from other albums. 'Different' without being too 'distant'. A nice little 'aside' if you will.
this album is an absolute masterpiece. I listen to a decent selection of music (primarily heavy metal) but i cant think of any other album that is quite as breathtaking as Minstrel in the Gallery
There is and it is an instrumental part which starts......at 6:34,
so go to part 2, this song is made of 5 parts; Baker Street Muse, Pig-me and the whore, Nice little tune, Crash-barrier waltzer and Mother England reverie............
Funny that I borrowed this album from Johnny Marr (yes, of The Smiths), who I was at school with, and, I'm ashamed to say, never returned (sorry Johnny!). Still got it.!
It is really nice to see such positive comments on one of the the finest and greatest composers of our time, Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. I have seen JT over 25 times since 72 and I have to say they are the best live band I've seen. It's good to see that there are still a lot of JT fans out there. I'm glad there are still people out there who appreciate excellent music. Please keep up the new and old Jethro Tull posts...
i am 200% filled with jealousy, Im only 20 years old and have recently discovered Tull. I have never heard a band so talented and beautiful sounding. I believe they have ruined music for me since nothing i have heard can compare.
They have skipped to the top of my must see bands. now they just need to come to toronto. I feel like i missed something wonderful, i need to see them
@spyne666 Just ran across your note. Hope you still feel the same. I'm on the other end of the time spectrum (60 trs. old) and have enjoyed the hell out of all good music from 1958 on. I've had many favorites over the years and been asked, in conversation by nearly all musicians, if I'm a musician. Having been a Tull fan from the beginning, I finally moved them a few yrs. ago, into my top respected spot of all time. Ian's writing is truly genius!
@spyne666 heavuier stuff.... but the only band that has ever had the heart and talent of Tull is another Brit band...Iron Maiden.. still going strong as ever.... check out their new CD final frontier.... When the Wild Wind Blows ...could very well have fit on a Tull Record..... Steve Harris ...bassist and founder of Maiden...has given credit to Tull and is an amazing songwriter himself... I find similarities in their songwriting..my 2 favorite bands (and Maiden will tour next yr)
sadly, seeing the band now is not like it was...ians voice is fading...the band is is martin barre and some kids...good band yes, but with the voice sounding a bit like popeye the sailor,it doesnt quite recapture 1973..i reccomend you tube ..some great versions of my god...and the tull tapes are not to be missed..1973 my young friend....
The entire 'Minstrel In The Gallery' album is classic Tull. Very few bands have ever possessed the level of musicianship and creativity of Jethro Tull.
The progressive rock group YES is another favorite of mine. I used to like them more than J.Tull, but overtime I have switched that opinion. I now think Jethro Tull is perhaps the greatest rock band of all time.
This is the greatest song of all time in my opinion. It represents everything Tull has ever meant to me, which is an immeasurable amount. The range of emotions this song takes me through is unmatched by any other song. It has always been and will always be my favorite song off my favorite album ever, the incomparable Minstrel in the Gallery. Thanks for finally posting so I can listen to it at work!!!
"From the typing pool goes the mini-skirted princess, with great finesse. Fertile earth mother, your burial ground is 50 feet down in the baker street underground." -- still produces chills after all these years.
