They haven't taken the entire websites down. They've only prevented access by flooding them with traffic.

Taking down = Breaking into them and removing all the content required for the website to run, including backups.

Prolonging usability = DDoS.

I really don't think there is a point to making these websites unusable. It stops nothing.
