@MissFunkyfly: Mark was one of Norman's proteges. Mark Davis is the guy on the album cover with the late Marvin Gaye that Marvin has the red skull cap on. A little MArk Davis trivia. He's produced Marvin and Diana, Jerry Butler. He wrote Rollin Down the Mountainside done by The Main Ingredient. His company Whitsett Hill produced the film Spinning into Butter with Sarah Jessica Parker
@michaeljulius119 Wow, that's great info, thanks! I always wondered what "Brother Whit" thought of Mark taking his sound 100% on "Which Way Is Up" for Stargard. :) It sounds exactly like Whitfield, almost to the ridiculous level. It's one hell of a song, though, that's not what I mean. Just that it is hard to believe Norman Whitfield didn't produce it. Whatever you know about Mark is interesting stuff to me- thanks for sharing.
MissFunkyfly....thank you ever so much. I've looked for this for years. I saw the album credits. The original version of this song was recorded at Mowest (Motown) Studio in 1975. I know because I played bass on it. It was produced by Mark Davis (Which Way is Up) Rickey Soo may have been the original bass player...because I overdubbed my part. The tracks were already laid.
@michaeljulius119 That is just great! Made my day and my evening as well to read your words. I love the entire LP, one of the best Edwin ever did in my view. So raw, so funky, so real. I've always wanted to know more about Mark Davis. I heard he was a protegee of Norman Whitfield, which would explain the sound on "Which Way Is Up". Did you play on any other of the tracks? Great to meet you this way! Thanks for commenting!
