hey there is a little piano solo at the end of my "lean on me" cover on my channel that I didnt realize was there untill later, totally adlibed. you think you can play somethin like that??? jw lol
I usually work on the first 20 exercises as a warmup or if I am just strapped for time. It really seems to get my fingers warmed up fast. I like them. Jake
There is a repeat sign in the penultimate measure in each exercise. The book wants you to play three different exercises back-to-back with the repeat signs I assume. That takes a long time. I really don't know how to train with Hanon, should I do the first 5 exercises for a week or month once a day? Hanon never gave a syllabus.
would you use the same fingerings for other scales than the c, lets say A major, or even worse, F# major? Cause Hanon mentions somewhere to play in all scales.
the great schumann went even further, he put little weights on his fingers every night and they would train his fingers while he was sleeping. He eventually got paralyzed.
@033muil Yep, that's why you don't over do it ^_^ Hanon or anything else should always be practiced carefully.
Yes weights and then later I believe it was the rope pulley that actually was the final straw that caused permanent damage to his finger. He was sure not a dull character that's for sure.
You are good teacher--very good advice! Thank you so much. My fingers were hurt many year ago as my teacher asked me to play it fast but my fingers were painful to play. After many years, now, I come back to play again.

Great videos.... I really like the relaxed approach, too.... I (haven't played in 27 years) use Hanon (pronounced Han"ong"... you know what I mean) also just to warm up the fingers a little. I go back to the 6 first ones occasionally even while practicing sompley to remember finger position. When I was a kid, I thought the stuff was somewhat boring, but I must say..... I love the minimalism of it...
I love your comment 'this is like tendonitis in book-form if you don't se it properly'. I have found this system a but mad. Chopin said that each finger has its own properties but this is best viewed as saying to strengthen the fingers not equalize them as that is imossible. The thumb is always going to be stronger than the little finger but you can make the kittle fimnger stronger and bring it up to a CERTAIN levek good enough to play fff rapidly? NOT to EQUALIZE all fingers? What dyou think?
I recognized that yellow book immediately! I started learning Hanon exercises when I was 8 :-) I'm SO enjoying your lessons, thanks for sharing your gift.
i was just thinking about this from a biological perspective and have this to say in response to the pro-hanon method; not all fingers are equal in the sense that while the thumb, index and middle fingers have 1 neuron dedicated to the movement of each, the 4th and 5th fingers have 1 neuron between both of them. you can see this yourself in your hands and can demonstrate the difficulties attached to this by trying to use move the fingers independently (without moving one or the other).
I bought the guitar version of this book a while ago. It's good, but some of the patterns are so damn retarded and complex that it makes you want to throw your guitar against the wall.
LOL! that's hilarious! yea, things liek that can be VERY frustrating. My advice is don't try to go to quickly. Just go slow and learn one bar at a time.
I have just recently subcribed to your videos. I play the piano aswell. I was wondering if you would be able to do a video on Pachabels Canon in Dmajor. All of your videos have made me exell so much more in piano and i just want to thankyou for all your help. THANKYOU SO MUCH.
i wish I found you sooner, I have stage 3 tendonitis. I've been practicing very little with BH and more with just LH. Not able to play which was all I ever did, I dont work just played piano all day. Now I dont have anything to do but watch your videos and hope i get better soon any sugestions? P.S I think i got hurt because my teacher gave me hard pieces i was not ready techical for like exercize books with just octives and hard peices like listz lebistrume. also did'nt play relaxed.
well typing is bad, so is playing, just rest for 3 weeks do no practising, then when you get back into practising, play everything at PP very softly, and slowly, after a week of this then you can play maybe MP but still soft, start focusing on playing relaxed as well :)
First, thanks for the work that you do here. I took lessons for a few years as a kid. I learned to play notes out of the books and that was about it. I have been watching your videos for a few weeks and have really learned a lot already. Thanks for that.
Question on Hanon: Do you see any benefit from transposing these drills to a different key ?
Transposing them to other keys has your brain learn each key more solidly, plus it moves each finger in a different way than it would in another key, which is good since not all pieces are in the same key.
hey i have a great question for u i wanna know how much is the cheapest deasent grand piano (or any piano that isnt eletric)please go to my chnnel and privet message message me
i am a card mgician who want to learn piano so plz let me know thx see ya later
what's a good way to keep tension out of the wrist. somtimes when i stop, i hear a little pop sort of like when you crack your knuckles. It happens when I type or use a mouse. No pain though. Is it an alignment problem with my wrist and forearm?
hmm, that doesn't sound normal. If it's bothering you i'd go see a health specalist. Since I'm not there to see the problem, I can't really tell you what it could be.
The only thing I will say is that, make sure your wrists are straight not bent or curved as much as possible. Sometimes people sit too close to the piano and this causes your wrists to need to bend outwards to compensate. Make sure you can play the keys with a straight wrist ^_^ Hope that helps
Did you know that Shostakovich parodied one of Hanon's exercises in his 2nd Piano Concerto? Another really great video. You are genuinely contributing to this website.
for example. when I started practice Hanon. My left hand just fell very tired when i play until No.5, but my right hand is still ok. and I even cant play basice scale, so I dont know what should i start to practice so that I can get better..cuz right now I just cant play any peiece i can play before, like mozart sonata, chopin noctone, walte..etz
You should do scales and technique to get your arms moving again, do a bit a hanon, do that for maybe 20-30 minutes per day with little breaks here and there. then start doing sight reading from grade 5 level. Once you've done that for about 2 weeks, then try relearning a piece you used to be able to play in grade 10 level. or something you really enjoyed that wasn't ARCT, after you relearn this then you can try going SLOWLY into one of your easiest ARCT pieces. ^_^ then you should be good
Hello..very luckly i found this video!!!I hope you can help me..
As for me, I started play piano like 13 years ago(when i was 6). and during the time I play, i didnt have a very good solid piano technic(cuz I am too lazy to practice those basic technic stuffs T_T).around 2 years ago, I just got my ARCT level(can play Mozart sonata, most Chopin Waltz and No2. Secherzo etc..) and then I stop playying piano because I had lots home work to do in my last year in high school. continue..

Be wary of this guys words. He doesn't have a solid understanding of the mechanics of pianism, at least not to teach it. He claimed to have tendinitis. Let this be a sign of his expertise. He seems like a nice guy, but unclear teaching can cause bad habits.
Well, if you know my background you'll know my tendentious was caused by over 30 episodes of Paricaritous. Which had me so weak that I could not walk, I had 7 stomach ulcers, I almost died TWICE from this and I'm also suffering from muscle weakness across my entire body. I do know that my technique has been said to be effortless looking, and very fluid by well respected master's level students. I've been studying the ways of piano pedagogy for years, and studying piano for over 17 years. ^_^
before I became sick my technique was excellent to the point that I could play Polonaise in A flat major Op 53 (Heroic) by Chopin back to back up over 20 times, without feeling tired in the slightest, no pain, no effort was exerted. :) I did NOT have tendentious until AFTER I almost died. Hanon itself is dangerous if not used correctly. I know of many people who have developed tendentious by using Hanon, or also by doing excessive octave practise.
I can attest to Hanon being a high-risk set of exercises. I did Hanon myself for 6 months, without instruction, and got myself into a series of wrist and elbow-aches.
Now I am doing Hanon with instruction from my piano teacher, who asks me to use less finger-lifting, and more arm weight/drop. My fingers have also relaxed, and I only play at a speed that I can manage without tiring. My LH has been strengthened over the months, hence proving that Hanon can be beneficial when used correctly.
If i sound harsh or defensive, it's because it can be quite annoying to have your knowledge criticized by people who know nothing about you or your past. Citing the reason of my own tendentious to discredit me is a pretty weak argument when you lack any knowledge of my past. Don't judge me so quickly. lol...I normally don't let hate comments bother me so much, I guess i'm just in a snappy mood. Seriously if you think you can do a much better job, I'd love to see you post it. Thanks ^_^

Would hanon be classed as an 'etude'. A friend told me to use etude's by Czerny and Alkan. Do you have any critiscm of either of these composer's
ChrisBryon 3 years ago
non! Czerny is wonderful. People trained using Czerny pieces are very capable players. They will develop an amazing technique.
