The BIG 8 CKLW, don't remember hearing The Who on that Windsor station. I do remember Arther Penhollow on WRIF FM Detroit. 1971 was my transition from AM to FM. What an impact for the music industry and the listeners!
Ted Nugent compared to The Who? Phhhhht! Nugent is a nut-ball hack who had one hit, the inane "Cat Scratch Fever". How could anyone even mention him in same breath as Townshend?
Ted Nugent compared to The Who? Phhhhht! Nugent is a nut-ball hack who had one hit, the inane "Cat Scratch Fever". How could anyone even mention him in same breath as Townshend?
You can see the look of disgust on Pete's face, he has said in numerous interviews he did not like playing Shea. I love the Kinks too and Davies is an awesome player and a true MOD band! Long Love Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend!!!!
This show was my first concert, I was 13 years old. I was so excited in the days leading up to it. I had a dream/nightmare one night before the show that there were TVs as Shea and I just watched the TV instead of the band on stage. And guess what? At the actual show there was the biggest TV screen I'd ever seen above the stage. LOL. I forced myself to not look at it.
I saw them in Louisville on this tour. They played this one as one of the encores with Twist and Shout. Never forget it. My ticket was my birthday present from my sister.
thanks for posting this..its funny how timeless the who's music is. i first heard this song summer 2001 and since then this song always reminds me of the girl i hung out with that summer.
i was at this show...twas a crazy night @ shea, the who and the clash with david johannson as the opening punching bag...a real punker vs rockers kind of night
I was 13 at JFK 1982 Pete side 2 sections over from stage 25 rows up or close to it this was my third concert... I missed Hooters walked in on Santana
It started in the afternoon. It was an all day event. There were a few openers including Santana and the Clash. Great day. First time I ever saw them. I've seen them like 30 times since then. Can't wait to see them play the Superbowl Feb. 7.

This is everything about the Who i hated, the slippery slope into total naffness! From being the ultimate band of the 70's to this crap along with songs like Sister disco, the who went very bad at this point..Townsend has totally lust the plot with his writng etc,"man in a purple dress etc" The Who r dead, Long live the Who
Man in a Purple Dress is a fantastic song. It has real meaning behind it. Their newest album is actually very good, although without Keith and John they don't have the manic energy that made them so great in the past.
they rocked in the 60s, 70s, then again with you better you bet and athena...pete is a genious...he will crank out art no matter what year it is...its just the death of keith slowed them from wanting to produce more albums....the who...the first band to ROCK....thats my final answer
Thank you, ShorthandedGoal! This is the very first time I have heard The Who play Athena live. It sounds to me like uptempo-reggae; a dance tune really. I still love it! The Who did not play this song at their 1982 Farewell Concert in Toronto. I still have my simulcasted FM bootleg. It is also not on the official 'The Who Live From Toronto' cd, 2006. Great show though.
@leesRoger Daltrey has been considered one of the sexiest men on the planet. that looks like a transsexual is a vile insult to a great singer who is legend. you are legend?. are clothes and hairstyles of the 80 idiot!mommyishot
@leesmommyishot It's great that you and I are big fans of this brilliant band, but I will not allow anyone to insult Roger for me the most wonderful man on earth. He is great!
True dat, but he struggled on his leads and solo's. Never noticed it until Ted Nugent made the comment. Of course Ted also exclaimed Jimmy Page sucks so there you go...
Townshend wasn't the shredder, maybe, that Nugent is, but Nugent wishes he could sing and write like Townshend. I'd argue that today, Townshend, between 2000 and today, is the better guitarist. I like Nug's views on a lot of things, but not on Pete's guitar playing. Townshend and The Who will always be more important.
@whobeatle Ted Nugent is a nobody. In twenty years, no one will even know his name. Pete Townshend is a genius. They should never be uttered in the same context.
@mrbobevans Why put Ted Nugent down? He's always been 100% rock. Ted Nugent was a huge part of the 1970s hard rock scene esp. in the American heartland. Detroit was a huge market for both the Who and Ted Nugent.
@urah2525 I was listening to 101.1 WRIF in Detroit back in the day, which played all the great bands of the 60s, 70s and 80s including The Who, Ted Nugent, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, etc. When I first started listening they still played the Beach Boys and the Beatles, this was around 1980-81.
@kubrick681 Right on, brother! Back then WRIF might play a Beach Boys song like Don't Worry Baby right after a song by Led Zeppelin or the Who. In those days it was all good rock and roll.
Shea Stadium rarely ever has hosted concerts, only a handful of artists have played there. The Beatles of course, the Police in 1983, Billy Joel, the Stones and of course the WHO!
@B2B76: Actually Shea did host quite a few concerts back in the sixties. They were usually package-type shows with a host of bands on the same bill. Usually though, the audience weren't allowed on the field in order to protect the grass. Same thing with Yankee stadium. It's usually football stadiums that host the most concerts anyway. Since football season is played in the fall and winter, the stadiums are available in the early summer for concerts. Baseball stadiums are in use during that time.

This is kind of a weird video. It seems Pete is pissed cuz the sound and lights are shit, it being Shea Stadium.
I wonder how they felt playing this style and how it compared to their "mod" days. Its almost as if they had come full circle.
They never moved much past "Its Hard", as a quartet. Jones never had that drive.
But so much of the presentation was based on the "cool '80's". And the director never shows the definition of cool, John Entwistle. Dumb Ass.

It's a sound check or rehearsal for a video of some sort... not a live audience other than the crew and a few of their friends.
wasn't the video for this song a performance of the song? I agree a lackluster rendition of this song.
