Such nostalgic viewing ~ I feel quite lucky to have had the privilege to spend many weeks/weekends on Koh Samed between 1984/5. I always went back to the same wonderful rustic bungalow on the same beautiful beach, and even way back then it was called Tubtim's. I wonder if it still belongs to the same family. Back then there were virtually no roads on the island and all accommodation was wood/palm bungalow only ~ no concrete. Paradise.
I stay at Tubtim for 3/4 months a year and its perfect !! i did once see the water as high as the bar steps, the tables and chairs on the beach were a foot underwater !
The island of Ko Samet is gorgeous and not as heavily "touristed" as some of the other islands like Phuket. There are a couple of fancier (and more expensive) resorts than Tubtim on the island, but there are also a number that are much more rustic than Tubtim. And none has a better beach than Tubtim. If you haven't already done so, watch my video "4 Ocean, Swimmers, and Boats at Ko Samet, Thailand" to see more about Tubtim Resort. Have fun on your trip!
Exploring the island of Ko Samet is fun. You can walk far along the beach or along the trails and "road" and have many places to stop for food or drinks for a change of pace. You can rent small motorcycles just a short way up the beach, but be careful. Riding is fun but dangerous because the road is rutted, and I know 2 people who got hurt riding there at different times in the last couple of years - neither seriously enough to end their vacation, but that was just luck.
The Tubtim beach is beautiful with great sand and many chairs, tables and umbrellas for lounging, and they serve you food and drinks at reasonable prices. It's also great for swimming, and a float is anchored a ways out. Vendors often walk along the beach. The closest ATM is at the upper tip of the island, a very long walk from Tubtim, where you may land if you take a boat to the island unless you make arrangements to have it take you directly to Tubtim. That's worth the little extra money.
We loved it. It's more of a family atmosphere rather than the wild parties at some other places. The cottages are very plain - just bed, shower, sink and toilet. Ask for an extra blanket if you want one; they're thin. They have air conditioners, but electricity is shut off for part of the night to conserve energy because fuel has to be brought to the island to run the generators, which caused us no discomfort. Food and drinks in their beach restaurant were good.
