Get the first Chili Peppers album with John Frusciante on it, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. If you're already familiar with that, then I don't know man. Not to many folks doing funk these days. I highly recommend The Mars Volta though, for whom Thomas Pridgen is drumming now. Sorry I couldn't think of more modern funk stuff though.
