  • that looks 3d to me, doesn't look like real photo

  • @reply4reply

It's a real photo(s) - not 3D CGI at all. Visit the official site for more.

  • Hi there Stephen. Geez, it's been almost 4 years since I last saw this video and was excited that someone was making an imax video about Saturn. The thought came back to me today, and I thought I'd drop by to see how the project is going and when do you think you'll be fully done with it? Can't wait to see it if you can actually pull it off! :)

  • @Gamenerd1991 - the latest footage can be see at: vimeo DOT com/11386048

  • Have you tried contacting Richard Branson as he likes to help these days and I'm sure if you have part for him, say narration by Richard Branson he would be thrilled and would up the money project a bit higher to see it through. Give him a call doesn't hurt to call.

  • wow with nearly 905 that think its a scam!

Only 1110 think this guy is legit?

  • @EmpireLS56KW - still crazy that people think this is not legit. This project has come a long, long way. New clip of first footage on Vimeo and film is officially listed on LF Examiner and GSCA (Giant Screen Cinema Association sites).

  • what is another name for the "2.5D technique"?

If I were to attempt to make a video with similar effects, what would that take?

  • Dont give up.

    Listen all your haters!

If YOU, yeah you, did a project like this, and I teased you, How would YOU feel!?

Its art, not last years milk. You guys need to wake up and look at the last movie made at imax.

By the way, don't give up stephen!

  • @theflyingrosie

no worries - i just showed 2 minutes of test footage at the international IMAX conference and the feedback was very good. look for big progress soon!

  • I can't wait until' the film is out. I love IMAX and i'm interested about Saturn. When is the date that its gonna get released?

  • thanks - we just had test shots screened at the Raleigh IMAX museum on film and it looked great. Am doing a crowd-sourcing funding model to finish the film and so far signups have been good.

  • Uh, Maya is not real photographs which is the entire point of the film (see the many tired "why not 3D stuff") already posted years ago.

And if you knew anything about stereoscopic, you would known planets a million miles from camera can't be in stereo unless you make them tiny cartoon baby planets

  • YEeeeesss, that's the working title of my autobiography - the "life in the insignificant basement"

"a little google goes along way"

  • ah, the trolls are back in town...

  • Oh my gosh.

    It was a HUGE challenge

    Nice!

  • Whats that smell? I smell four letters SPAM!

  • all i smell is troll. visit the official website or fractured atlas site that is fiscal sponsor for confirmation.

  • Inspiring, keep up the hard work.

  • You are a pioneer.. Bravo

  • I favorited this video a year ago I believe, glad theres progress mate ! ^^

  • Indeed. And look for more progress towards full funding by the middle of next year...

  • I knew this was a leech sucking guy who just wanted my money, after the whole video I got this!

  • That sentence does not even make sense...

  • man i think your an inspiring person to make an imax film in your basement. we should be learning about you in our schhols and how couragis you are to do such a thing!

  • Thanks - work is coming along nicely on the film.

  • hey mate i am willing to donate a big sum of money but the problem is i only got a working paypal atm...

  • yo get a life

  • oh the irony...

  • damn donate me some money to I'm hungry... ;)

  • how long is this movie going to be because you can submit this to IMDB

  • I did but as it's 40 or so minutes, it can't be listed with my other films until it screens one.

  • when will you release it

  • It was just earlier this year I raised enough money to start on the IMAX version (the stuff in the teaser trailer is all early HD stuff) and the goal is summer 2010 when hopefully IMAX will have enough digital theaters so I avoid having to transfer to film. The budget is now only $150k and about 1/5 raised to date. Hope to screen a couple of minutes at IMAX conference this year to raise more money.

  • cool oh btw i heard about your movie at the Souther Star Astronomy Convention (AKA Southen Star)

  • Ken Randall? He's a friend of mine and very encouraging on this project.

  • I can't understand why all these annoying frat-boys are bashing this awesome project..oh wait..

I can't waaaaaaaaaaaaaaait for thissssssssssssss to beeee done

  • Good luck, it looks amazing so far.

  • Thanks. Production on the film actually just started.

  • You what money, excuse that is called spam!

  • it's a fiscal sponsored project via fractured atlas who sponsors thousands of artists who also seek donations. of course, if you bothered to visit their site or mine, you could have figured that out without wasting everybody's time.

  • wow! i want to see this!

  • Geek? He's creating, or at least using, a unique form of art. A geek is a loser who sits in front of a computer flaming someone across the internet. That just shows you have no life. Not like I'm pointing at anyone though...

  • I'd like to see you accomplish anything one-tenth as amazing as this "geek" can.

  • what music is that? It sounds familliar somehow.

  • Musik was covered from Samuel Barber´s "Adagio for Strings"

    very nice one!

  • This guy has $500k to spend on this movie?

  • Visit the website. I'm trying to raise $150k to make it. Most IMAX film cost 6 Million.

  • do it. but in 3D. nothing else. no medium might express it better, than a "being there Camera".

you see much more details when you are on location. ;) pictures we´ve shooten from earth can help, but details (!) wich makes it impressive (in 4k!) is only under 3D possible.

  • You might want to watch my other video called "why NOT 3D"...also this has been discussed heavily in old comments.

  • well, ok I´ve seen it, but anyway, I think that 3D will help. e.g. when you pass through the rings - in the moment when you axectly look ahead the thin thing, in your example, you need some particle stuff/Polystones also some shots like a maybe closer passen moon (titan comes up with a highres map) needs to be visualized in 3D. Remember: you can paint with a pencil like a chimp, or you can paint something that you almost cant realize as a painting... ;)

  • Bear in mind these are early concept shots, not the finished film. I am using other photographs for passing through the rings. However, there will be no gratuitous tumbling ring particles as you typically see in 3D Saturn ring stuff which I think looks very fake anyway.

  • I am using particle systems, but not it the way you would think. I use a plugin for AE called Particular and use photographs as the particles. Very computer intensive, but result work great (see the teaser trailer and this is used for the starfield (actual photos of stars arranged with frozen particle system) and the big bang (tens of thousands of star photographs animated).

  • i know these pluggin - yes might be for some things not too bad, like Particle illusion, it offers a fast way, to give you something that moves. But I would prefer to render some layers under a more controlable particle engine what for e.g. Maya offers to me.

Well saw the footage at JPL´s ... the resolution offered there itsnt enough for IMAX. You get higher res ones!? But anyway, the "2.75D" exaples are looking quiet nice!

  • .. I would say at least 5-6k res Footage will be needed - also due to the sparepixel need for zooming.

  • I'm not needing a true particle system or true 3D, I'm just creating depth and motion in real photographs. It's really just an aesthetic preference based on my belief about the film.

The Cassini cameras are only 1 Megapixel. But they shoot very disciplined pattern that can be mosaiced. You have to dig, but there are number of high resolution (5 to 10k) resolution mosaics. I've created several of my own and have rights to others that have been created.

  • Well I am catching you and the Idea. 10k sounds that much better. You say you are having rights to others? Your personal? or is there some public sites, where you can get access to the highres mosaics? It´s a must for me to see them! ..=) thnx!

  • There are number of mosaics on JPL Saturn Site, the CiClops DOT org site and unmannedspaceflight DOT com. The 10K files are mostly private though (Mine are) but you can find a few dozen 2k - 8k files on the public sites.

  • ill donate when i am of legal age... (3 years)

  • sounds like a scam to take everyone's money

  • it's amazing to me how many people on youtube are unable to use google.

  • whats google?

  • HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA, DEFINITELY A CON ARTIST, HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA, I've done High Definition 3D animations and videos shown around the world for less than 100 dollars... I don't think people would be that stupid to give money for something that can definitely be done for less than 50 thousand dollars. The 70mm transfer costs like 30 thousand at most. What's the rest of the money for? His mortgage?

  • First, this clip is out of date. The film is now a non-profit and the budget is cut in half ($250,000) now.

    This film is not high definition - it's 4k (that's 4000 X 3000) pixels, 32-bit float mode, not 8-bit and it's not 3D animation, it's hand frame by frame.

You don't know jack about film transfer as IMAX runs well over $1 a frame - 2D filmout for this film is almost $300,000 and 3D (two print for 3D projection) is double.

But I'm aiming to only to digital exhibition.

  • dont give up! im gonna help!

  • Lol half a million that could've gone elsewhere...

  • You will make it! Hang in there!

  • Do not give up you will make it!

  • awesome... O.O''

  • smug dam it smug

  • con artist ._.

  • whoa dude! I checked out the teaser. Looks very impressive and original. I'd pay to see that movie for sure.

  • Good luck!

  • err after spending 6 mil you didnt stop.now ur in debt buddy nice :)

  • uh, did you actually watch it or visit the site? I wish I had 6 million to spend...

  • You are amazing man! don't EVER EVER EVER EVER give up!

  • Thanks. Support is always appreciated.

  • If the man has a dream, you may choose to support him or not. If he asks for money, you may once again choose to assist or not. But don't criticize or insult, especially with lame uranus jokes.

  • Thanks very. I have heard it all here and you get used to it but still have to scratch your head at people who think insults are going to do anything other than motivate me even more deeply to make this film.

  • Understanding of the principle why not to DIY? Put 2 cams side by s; IMAX glasses in front of them, synchronize.

If you like stars, visit a public telescope in neighbourhood to make you think of something more close to the stars where no $ is is worshipped! The budget you ask is a price of a space ship; Look around on your way home and think why 95% of all money is held by only 5% population. Some people like U get too much for any little thing or rather to promisse and cheat.

  • Interesting that your youtube username is opposite of "Outside In". Very interesting...

PS, if you of any spaceships that cost $250k please, please let me know.

  • DJ Tiesto! You rock i would love to see your movie.

  • DJ Teisto is cool but this version is actually me performing Adagio for Strings (by Barber)

  • a remix to my favoriteTtiesto mix might i add

  • I have a better idea: Make an iMax film about Uranus.

  • I have an even better one. Search through the comments and realize how many people made this really lame third grade attempt at joke before you.

  • What ever u gonna take money for urself lol u lyer

  • if i could help you man i would but unfortunetly i am not good with tech. stuff and im broke but hey ill spread the word for you im sorry thats all i can do but i will do it

  • spreading the word is the very BEST way to help - thanks.

  • can ppl help by contributing work/time instead of actual capital? like 4 inst. donate their musical compositions. or tech skills. would be a good way for other upcoming artist to get noticed, and would prove tht ur not all about money.

  • the video mentions three ways people can help. i do have a number of people who've helped with work/time. but if you look at most any indie filmmakers web-sites, you will see that money, unfortunately, is the biggest challenge they face.

  • honestly, did any if you doubters and haters even check out his website? anyway, it looks cool imho, so good luck

  • thanks for the kind words.

no, they doubters and haters don't even watch the other clips posted here, much less the web-site. But I'm getting good traffic on the web-site and people who visit there tend to always send nice comments.

  • yay! :D

  • Uhm. I think... You need a real job. :)

  • ur the dikk eddd, they had camcorders in the 1990's! its about being artistic and doing things different from the orthodox norm. a picture is worth a thousand words. constructive criticism is 1 thing, this is def, destructive. hey stephen, dont let the haters get u down. u must be doing something right.

  • dude, wait till technology gets better, you will generate movies like this before your tea gets cold, don't waste our time!

  • I know this is already obvious to everyone, but I wanted to chime in because it needs to be made more obvious.

I don't think there's enough demand to see this clip of Saturn. Donations should be going to more worthwhile kids in Africa.

  • I grew up in Africa and my family works in relief agencies there. This film is not just about Saturn - it's about our future, all of our planets future.

  • you should let the ppl that are donating do wut they want with their money

  • That's a tough statement to claim. If the world's wealth, as you suggest, were to be equally distributed... I'm not sure I want to make any bold statements of where money should go. I have my beliefs about poverty in Africa, South America, Sri Lanka, China, Equador, and all other countries, but I try not to say what is and isn't worthy investments.

  • yeah why the fuck should WE pay so he can have his goal completed. im sure if what he was doing was of enough interest to people then the media would have already covered the shit out of it.

  • That looks pretty sweet

  • I have the deed to the Brooklyn Bridge... would that help?

seriously though, its cool and someone who has gone to college for media and broadcasting, I know video editing is the most time consuming, mundane thing... looked neat

  • i LOVE you background music. one of my favorite all time dj, TIESTO played this at a concert in Vancouver. Tiesto: Elements of Life Vancouver: Adagio for Strings... AMAZING..

  • Tiesto is great. Except this is not Tiesto, it's me playing Adagio for Strings.

  • well you did an AWESOME job at it~~!

  • looool...is this guy for real??? donate ???

  • you're wasting your time answering all these mornic youtube posts when you could be working on your movie. why would i donate to you?

  • read the earlier comments about the geo-database for distributors...

  • i support you. i think some how you'll do it. just ignore the people who think its a dumb idea.

    IMAX FTW!

  • Don't you need an imax theater to play an imax movie? I feel like that should be your first concern before spending 10 years or however long it took to make a 2 second fly by.

  • damn, i wish i thought of that. all those years...wasted...must jump off bridge and end this misery as the pointless waste of all those years is just too much to bear...............

wait, i did think of that. it's in the business plan and a summary is the press kit on official site - link to the right.

  • Why do u need the money? becuase all i could see you be working long time on your computer to get it working?

  • eres el mejor, saludos de venezuela

  • This is so stupid no one is going to pay you for that crap!

  • 6 mil wow ur fucken stupid!

  • Good luck! I would totally watch this!!!!!!

  • waste of time omg

  • I enjoyed the music.

  • Ok, i see u trying to do this to get other other people more interested (And, more importantly, get some money out of it.), but i don't think you're going to get a lot of money or get people interested, just because it won't sound interesting to modern people today. Good luck with getting some money man

  • Oh yeah , and nice trailer, hopefully you will be sucessful and make millions.

  • What was That Music In the background?

  • me playing Adagio for Strings by Barber.

  • OutletEntertainment u just got BURNED!!!!!! LMFAO!!!!! He beat u w/ 3 letters!!!! i know u ain't gunna take that. U walked right into that one man. U betta say su'm back or u gunna look stupid out all ova da web. And Yes...we all saw it. Don't let him clown u in front of everybody like dat Lolz.

  • This sounds great. Good luck with it, and I hope it works out for you.

  • cool i wish i could do that ps. get a job 4 money

  • Hahahah. Seriously what a torrential waste of time. No one wants to see a movie about Saturn anyway.

  • never realized wasting time was such a weather risk...

  • Never realized you were retarded and didn't know the definition of torrential.

    6. overwhelming; extraordinarily copious.

    (Dictionary . com)

Torrential as in overwhelming; excessive. Like how much of an overwhelming waste of time this is. Go pick up a dictionary once in a while.

  • pun

    noun, verb, punned, pun·ning.

    --noun

    1. the humorous use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest its different meanings or applications, or the use of words that are alike or nearly alike in sound but different in meaning; a play on words.

  • It's funny because it wasn't even a pun. It was just you not knowing there were multiple meanings of torrential. I give you credit for trying though.

  • Anyway, while were debating this stupid issue of whether it was a pun or not, let's go back to the real issue about how much of a waste of time this is and how much money you're going to loose. No one wants to see this. There has been countless others who have made better films about the planets. I know that this one uses "photo realism" "2.75d" but still. No one cares. Go outside, get out of your basement, and get a job.

  • loose money is scary - especially since money has no morals to begin with. i agree, no one wants to see that!

  • Wow I spelled lose wrong. Big deal. The point remains. No matter how much you try to point out my spelling inaccuracies your still some loser in his basement wasting money you don't have on a movie no one wants to see.

  • The point remains what? That no one wants to see this movie? Do you really want that to be your defining statement of fact? Send me a signed talent release form and 3 seconds of video stating exactly that. I will happily put as the tag in the end credits. No worries for you, since no one will want to see the movie, no one will ever see it :)

  • Wow thank you for agreeing with me. I couldn't agree more with the statement: since no one will want to see the movie, no one will ever see it :) because It's 100% true. You will only loose money with with a movie like this. No one wants another space imax movie. Especially one that only uses still photos.

  • still waiting for your video...

  • I do believe you meant to say "you're" and not "your". Stop making a fool of yourself. You have both spelling and grammar inaccuracies.

  • lmao ur the one with the "inaccuracies" as you guys always say well do you know what you're stands for?i learned it in 1st grade...it means you are and your means your...dumbass

  • not u steven i was saying that to outlet sry

  • *stephen

  • did he say some1 made fool of themselve? dam that sad, he must not hav a mirror. besides, u only get 500 characters, so u have to abrev. and this is not a formal letter, its chat, we have things like spell check in micro. word for the formal letters. duh!

  • hey, im quite sure thats what ppl said about the creator of utube, he started in his garage, google buys youtube for 1.65 billion and look whos sittin up on it now? as with steve jobs/apple.

  • lol! hillarious. i love to see a smartass get out smartassed. and then foolishly try to continue as if he didnt just get owned.

  • umm, wow...that is an epic waste of time.

  • lol yep

  • Good luck with this

  • lol title was misleading to me i thought this guy built an imax theater in his basement(also impossible) but just wanted to laugh at it, anyone i still laughed, i hope this guy gets paid somehow.

  • wow dude, i think you have a tad too much spare time on your hands.. but whatever floats your boat, getter done buddy........

  • hah same here

  • So, in the end it's all about begging for money for a lame movie about Saturn in 3D?

    whatever dildo.

Na, just kidding.. do your thing.

  • Wonderfull!! This is just great!! Excellent to see people interested and really pasionate about things! Keep it up and...when can we expect the final, complete version?

  • Hopefully in late 2009/2010 as that is when IMAX is supposed to roll out digital projection...

  • Shouldn't you be working on this thing? Not replying messages.

  • Replying to message takes about 30 seconds a day and is "working on this thing". I'm tabulating all the comments for distributors database...

  • So are you finished?

  • I fully support your cause. A film using only still photos would be so awesome.

  • contact john carmack

  • anyone else notice that the music is a techno-like remix of samuel barber's adagio for strings

  • it ain't no remix - that's me playing it live.
