  • my boombox at 6:39 clairtone 7980 ...BEAST!

  • The bigger the better.

  • I used to carry just a simple Casio tape recorder playing Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" and walk with it since I didn't have an actual boom box.

  • This is a great piece on n 80's Cutural icon. Seeing these boxes, takes me back to my youth when I would be transported to another place by the music my BoomBox was playing. It was my therapy. "Long live the BoomBox". THAFUZZ ;-)

  • Nice that's one day I'll do the same

  • One of the other reasons the boombox fell out of popularity was most took D cell batteries while the walkman took 2 AA's and lets face it, spending 10-20 dollars to load the boombox gets expensive with alkaline batteries and the only real way of powering them in that era, a nicd D cell of that era was exactly equal to a AA now for energy capacity. Today we can fit 5 times that into a D cell so the environmental impact of a boombox is minimal on battery usage.

  • you gotta know your limits with a boombox

  • WE SHOULD MAKE A NATIONAL DAY TO TAKE OUT THE BOOM BOX OR BOOM BOX EVENTS AT LEASE TWICE A YEAR... If you look around you would see many people with vintage stuff sporting. Like I said BRING EM OUT....

  • @trankillodad I take mine to an event every year called the Zombie Attack. It's done every year on Michael Jackson's birthday. I walk around playing Thriller and it has become an annual event for me ha ha...

  • He'll I'll convert a modern one to a classic one!

Because you have to have that dual auto-reverse cassette players.

  • Fuck Julian Casablancas.

  • The altec lansing IMT800 my closest thing to a boombox, incredibly loud and portable, and the public from my point of view are glad to see it back on the streets, I... personally don't care how annoying it is for some people, I'm bringing it back to the streets, share the music and enjoys life. JOIN ME!

  • BELIEVE ME: THE BOOMBOX IS GONNA COME BACK.

  • Can I nominate this piece for some kind of award? great work!

  • Tapes just sound extra dirtty cant go wrong with that when it comes to hip-hop

  • you gotta know your limits with a boom box

  • this is great

  • the first time I heard Kashmir was through the means of Puff Daddy On the Godzilla film Sound track.

  • This is go great, Roy!

  • Not to mention you can hold one above your head to woo girls and look like the biggest dork in history.

  • Love the boom boxes great video LO box is great too wonderful pics in it go grab a copy The Boom Project

  • I've got nothing but love for Fab 5 Freddy, but he was really going over the top, playing the race card, when talking about the banning of boom boxes.

  • Now they have boomboxes that play mp3s. I wonder what they will play in the future

  • Amazing collection! grat! :-)

  • Nice video. It's about time the boombox got some props.

  • Google "boombox museum". I had one of the JVC classics. It sounded great. Still have some of the NYC tapes made on it, early 80s.

  • @hardcorehouse Nothing like the old school BOOMBOX... many last minute classic roller skating partys were started due too the youth of yesteryear playing classic traxs & a huge crowd gathered. If not for the foundation of the BOOMBOX.... 2days youth would not have the ipod. Dont you agree with me hardcorehouse? We had some awesome times back in the 70's early 80's N.Y.C.. Break dancers, poppers & up rockers....many classic moments. The youth of 2day wish the had it so good!

  • 1983 blasting the Sanyo M9935K

  • Thank you!

  • I have a realistic 2250 but you can bearly hear anything with the volume up any ideas on what i could do to get it loud again?

  • @ctfmuzik just buy acasette adapter ;D

  • you gotta know ya limits with a BOOMBOX

  • Its a shame that my generation of people cant appreciate the origin of all the portable electronics that most of us have today.(I'm only 16 and I have a Ghettoblaster) For example I was on my front porch just listening to my TRC-931 and my so called friend told me to put that thing in the trash all because it's over 20+ years old. My response was"If it wasn't for this 'thing', you wouldn't have that iPod that you have in your pocket along with the music we have today"

  • I LOVE IT!

  • I recently took apart a boom-box because the circuit was fried and kept parts such as th VU meter and more.

  • A boombox can change the world!

  • The collector says "Youth culture has always been about pissing off your parents". Wrong. Maybe white American and British can be summed up that way, but with Black people, particularly in societies were we are a numerical minority (e.g., US, Brazil, UK), youth culture has (as Fab 5 Freddy hints) has always been about asserting one's identity to the larger culture. Much like Celie said in "The Color Purple", "I´m Poor... Black, I may even be ugly, But dear God , I'm Here, I'm here!".

  • @stagolee7 And the racists tirades continue.....

  • @TheOptimod - Based on your comment it appears that in your world it's "racist" to recognize and/or celebrate the unique expressions as displayed by identifiable ethnic/cultural groups.

  • @TheBLWB WTF are u talking about ? No u need to do some history and look up on jazz, rock, blues,pop,hip-hop,rap,soul,R&B.funk,disco,reggae and i guarantee that they are all originated from blacks and also the styles. i'm not racist . Just because i said that statement don't make me become racist person. You don't have any evidence to prove it by the way i have a lot evidence.

  • i used to have about 60 boomboxes but had to downsize,i'm down to abot 30 now, mainly sharp,Jvc ext..collecting has always been in me since as far back as i can remember, probebly the late 70s when i was a kid..i've no idea why or how i got into them, its like they found me,rather than me finding it..its strange ! this is a good video, they should make more of these !!

  • THE BOOMBOX IS NOT A TOY!!!

  • @wawababa20 You gotta know your limits with a boombox!

  • @wawababa20 But its a toy I always wanted.

  • Most popular music was invented by black ppl. Jazz,Rock,Blues,pop,Hip-hop,Rap,Soul,R&B,Funk,Disco,Reggae.

  • racist.

  • @TheBLWB How I'am Racist ?

  • Bringing race into it for starters - accomplishes nothing. And it wasn't 'invented' by black people they don't have sole rights to the origins of all those music styles, I suggest you do some credible research and produce incontrovertible evidence before making absurd and potentially offensive statements.

  • I got about 48 of those, as a collector as well, and we are a LOT in the world.... Guys there is something else besides The United States of America.... try planet Earth. This said (I am loosing saliva tell you this, most US citizens do not know about the rest of the world)... Okay, so I got 48 of those, 90% from Germany! And I would have to say that YES the Sharp 9696 is great!!!! But the 9595 was the flag ship for Sharp (my opinion)... If not, Good clip!!!!!

  • The model shown at 4:19 was my choice for mobile sound back in the day. It's still at my parent's house, in fact. The tape player won't spin anymore, but I refuse to get rid of it. Still looks amazing to this day.

  • lol We need a modern day, but retro boombox. That doesn't suck like the lasonic i93.

  • good job needed to be done

  • The best thing about boomboxes is that you can position it right in front of your face. I'm sorry but no matter how good of a home audio system you have in your living room, it still can't give the same effect as a boombox sitting on your desk only a few inches from your face.

  • Comment removed

  • LOve the boom box....I had several of them over the years and I still have my Fisher keyboard boom box!!!

I miss some of my classic ones though ;(

    Memories!!!!!!!!!!

  • "I have this music that you don't like but i dare you to turn it off"

    classic

  • the slower the tape decks open, the better. EQ LED .. MUST HAVE.

Shortwave 1 and 2.. NERD BONUS.

    HELL YES.

  • slow tape deck...

    great point.

  • I would just like to add, coming from the 80s-90s that there weren't only "african" and "latino" teens who carried these like the affirmed actioned fellow says in the video, but from experience, I can say confidently that there were plentyyyyy of white teens with them too. And we lived in the same "hoods" as everyone else. I deserve the boom box too...........fuck everyone who says otherwise. white pride.

  • Way cool video Thank you for the memories...You rock!!!

  • soon i will rock the streets with my TRK 8190 E

  • never missed losing my cd players never missed losing my mp3 players but my lasonic trc-931 just went missing and i damn near shed a tear.

  • What awesome and beautiful music machines. Maybe someday manufacturers will wake up and make a decent one again. ...give me 20 D batteries mothafucka!

  • This was such a great video! I didn't realize how much meaning was behind the boom-box.

  • boooostaaa!!!

  • ..................

  • Loved the old boom boxes back in the day. It was great to see all the 'crew's with their cardboard boxes breakdancing on the street with the boom box providing the music. Somehow it's hard to picture that with an ipod.

  • that ghetto blaster lol

  • The transistor radio was the first boombox

  • 1. That is an old boring "joke"

    2. You said in the beginning, that wouldt be ten facts and in the end you say we didnt notice?..

    what bad..xD

  • Black folk couldn't afford walkmen so they were forced to lug those clunky boomboxes if they wanted to listen to their fav music.

  • when did this become history?! man, were all gettin older.......

  • Hip-Hop Ain't Dead It Lives In The North

The BoomBox Lives Aswell With Hip-Hop Heads

  • Exactly Hip Hop is not dead...People just have Shit taste...Look at the Roots last Album massive in scope and Hip Hop perfection but do you hear it on the radio...Hell No...People need to wake up. If you support weak artitsts they keep comin back...Support real Hip Hop like Akrobatik's Remind My Soul!!!
