Mark Lanegan - vocals, Mike Johnson - electric guitar, Jack Endino - bass & 2nd electric guitar, Mark Pickerel - drums , Kurt Cobain - background vocals "
there's no nirvana in this song, sorry ... it's a Mark Lanegan/Mike Johnson song on Mark Lanegan's first solo album "The Winding Sheet" !
This is actually Jack Endino on bass and second guitar. then it's Mike Johnson on normal guitar. Krist did nothing with this song, although he did do a song on this album. Also, Kurt just did backing vocals.
Love this tune, NIRVANA were so humble.Wish we had them back.If you listen to the rhythm guitar, it sounds very Foo Fighters, especially the whole song in the chorus.
@TheToastBrothers oh yeah, and 3 of the Jury's songs can be found on the box set With the Lights Out. They're all Leadbelly covers: They Hung Him on a Cross, Ain't it a Shame, and an instrumental version of Grey Goose.
@JohnnyLurg I always thought after he did time in prison he was set free, have to check that out. Got a film on leadbelly and Arlo Guthrie, that's song writing from the fucking heart and they didn't take any shit.
@TheToastBrothers The Jury was a short-lived Leadbelly cover band fronted by Kurt Cobain and Mark Lanegan. The band lasted a little over a week. In Cobain's Journals, there is at least one sketch of the Jury's album cover.
i heard about this isnt this kurt, krist from nirvana and mark lanegan and the drummer from screaming trees as a band called the jury or is this something else
Lol let me be the millionth person on here to say this is Mark Lanegan's song. Kurt and Krist played on it yes, but calling it Niravna & Mark Lanegan takes too much credit away from Mark. Especially because he and Screaming Trees get lost in the shuffle a lot of the times. Putting up a picture of Nirvana up in the background is also stupid.
@ParadoxBaklash Know what you are talking about before you tell others off. Krist Novoselic also had a hand in "The Winding Sheet". He plays bass on "Where did you sleep last night".
i read that mark wanted to start a band with kurt and krist at the time the winding sheet was recorded but kurt wanted to do his own thing with nirvana.
I've always thought the exact same thing. And Tom Waits is awesome. I don't think Mark could do some of the things Waits does though. I can't imagine Mark releasing songs like Romeo Is Bleeding or The Piano Has Been Drinking
This is most defo Lanegan singing lead - he is simply one of the most incredible rock singers of the past 20 years. I have to admit I don't love this song as much as I should.
@majorisore our devil is hip hop and all yhat trashy music...!! or the devil could be the fucking shot gun tht kurt used....shit I got to cry.....later...:(
if it wern't for mtv abd NIRVANA I might have never discovered the SCREAMING TREES because MTV played them after the whole GRUNGE thing got national notorieghty. For those of you not familiar with S.T. checkout early stuff "TRANSFIGURATIOn" and the whole cassette "UNCLE ANESThsia".
what city is that that they play Grunge on the radio. I'm living in the wrong region obviously because they play way to much R&B here and the same 5 sknrd songs over and over.
Dude you're from Grand Rapids? I live like 15 minutes from Flint. That's cool that have a station devoted to Nirvana.... well kinda..... I wish it was more so Grunge.
thank you for your correction lol i was kinda close im only 19 so there still alot of pieces missing in the puzzle for me mark is a big idol to me but theres loads that branch aroud like malfunkshun mother love bone mad season temple of the dog melvins mr bungle alice in chains nirvana sound garden im shit with knowledge but music goes to my heart not head
Watch the MTV complete and uncut interview with Kurt Loder. Its probably my favorite Nirvana interview on youtube. Cobain talks about how he and mark recorded this....

this is one of my favorite songs ever.
gives you a sense of hopelessness mixed with the greatest expression of love, "you're going to make it better for a while"...
perfect for when you're down in the dark.

krist is playing bass on most tracks, and dave is drumming on a good few, so it's pretty much nirvana and lanegan.
smcdaid075 1 year ago
@smcdaid075
no, wrong, dave is not with one song on the album.
cobain just on this and wheredid u sleep last night as backing vocals.
and actually it´s jack endino on bass on the most songs.
really, don´t care too much about that, it just doesnt really matter, it´s good music, so no argument needed.

Ridiculous comment, it's the other way round, Kurt used to send fanmail to Lanegan. They subsequently met and became friends.
Down in the Dark is written by Lanegan and Mike Johnson (ex Dinosaur Jr).
