There are some egotistical spearfisherman out there and they are the ones that give us the bad reputation, most of the time these are beginner spearo's who haven't learned the way of spearfishing yet. i was meaning that these trawlers you see in the vid do not catch any bluefin or at least very very rarely. Sure they catch bycatch but the Hoki stocks on the west coast are at least levelling off and its better than the free for all that used to exist. I am sure it is beautiful and exciting but it is definitely not helping this vulnerable species which is all i was really trying to say and that that is not real respect for the fish. To respect the fish you would have to let it live.

I enjoy eating fish and have NEVER brought fish from a supermarket or fish market just because I know how many fish have to be killed to get those few keep able ones. I'm a very keen Spearfisherman and love how selective the sport is! if you see a good fish you shoot it, you don't kill 20 other fish before you get one keeper.

the trawlers are fishing sustainably and legally for Hoki under a managed quota system and are not catching tuna at all (not even bycatch).

Hahaha, The tuna are quite smart compared to the Hoki schools and can quite easily avoid being caught by a slow moving net. No by-catch did you say? more like not MUCH by-catch compared to fishing for other species. I have been fishing for Hoki and we have pulled up nets with 80% by-catch! A lot depends on the skill of the skipper and how well he knows the area. The sad thing is most of the by-catch just gets thrown straight over the side. So much for the "quota management system" aye?
