It's not where you live it's how you carry yourself. You have people (Young Adults) who come from the finest homes and still find a way to do the wrong things like shooting up schools in predominantly white areas. Just think about it.
I grew up in the projects in East New York and although there was some crime, there were also some of the finest people anywhere living there. And I got a much better education than growing up in some boring suburb. You can knock it, but it sure was interesting.

Since C.G and the R.T.H's were torn down (just a couple of the many torn down) Queens bridge PJ's supposedly holds the title for largest A.A public housing.

I'm a black man and I pray and thank god that I never grew up in public housing projects like this. Growing up in an environment like this makes it very difficult to succeed. If you want to overcome the obstacles I still believe you can. It just makes it so much harder.

@CinnCity78 unless they have the money to put up for a private school, they cannot escape those schools. People do beat the odds but the odds are NOT stacked in their favor. Plus, it's a daunting process to get someone in the hood to a private school. They have specific criteria that probably will not be met. That was my original point: it puts them at a, I would argue, a fairly big disadvantage to people born in affluent communities. The "haves" and the "have nots."

This is not up to debate, it's fact. To put it simply, drugs for 99% of well people is a recreational activity to get through depression or celebrate good times. For a good portion of the poor it's a way of life and extremely difficult to leave.

I grew up in the projects in East New York and although there was some crime, there were also some of the finest people anywhere living there. And I got a much better education than growing up in some boring suburb. You can knock it, but it sure was interesting.

@rodfpuncher Simple... it's the survival of the fittest. They're poor housing with people making either low income or practically no income, so crime rates tend to be very high in projects, as in robberies, burglaries, drug trafficking, gang banging... you get the idea.

oh and FYI, cabrini green was the largest AND most notorious african american project in the entire country, followed by the robert taylor homes on the south side. Since C.G and the R.T.H's were torn down (just a couple of the many torn down) Queens bridge PJ's supposedly holds the title for largest A.A public housing.

I'm a black man and I pray and thank god that I never grew up in public housing projects like this. Growing up in an environment like this makes it very difficult to succeed. If you want to overcome the obstacles I still believe you can. It just makes it so much harder.

They do not have the same opportunity for equal education or have access to stable families that aide them in their adulthood. I certainly don't believe that the people who live in these projects have a chance at the best schools because the educational system is crap in poor inner cities. Lack of funding and standardized testing prove this.Common sense indicates that te chances of parents being on drugs are much higer with poorer families. It's possible to escape the ghetto,but it's a tough task.

@chrisconnell well, it all depends on the person's drive. of course their 'hood schools are going to be crap, but if they have parents who are willing to send them outside the school district to get a better education, then it can happen. like i said, not everyone from the pj's is destined for failure-some ppl are just in a perpetual struggle economically, but that by no means automatically classifies them as "doomed failures" there are more than enough examples of ppl who have beaten odds.

Plus, it's a daunting process to get someone in the hood to a private school. They have specific criteria that probably will not be met. That was my original point: it puts them at a, I would argue, a fairly big disadvantage to people born in affluent communities. The "haves" and the "have nots."

This is not up to debate, it's fact. To put it simply, drugs for 99% of well people is a recreational activity to get through depression or celebrate good times. For a good portion of the poor it's a way of life and extremely difficult to leave.

who needs projects? they were set up for failure to begin with. here in Chicago our projects were occupied by whites working during world war II then they moved out & blacks from the south moved in. i know cause i grew up in cabrini green. i saw the last white jewish family move out in 1980. fuck the projects. i seen too much shit there. im glad most of Chicago's projects are gone & new town homes coming up. its too bad NY 's jets wont be coming down for a while.
