If you have ever seen the Phantom on Broadway or other places showing the original production I think you will find this a poor movie. To me , right or wrongly, the definitive Phantom is Michael Crawford ad this movie fails to even come close to the stage production. My wife and I enjoyed this movie and some of the liberties taken, but in the whole it's a three star movie. It is sad that the movie missed completely it's target audience, the young.

I love this version of POTO. However I also think it ruined it. Now a lot of girls are like, "Why is Michael Crawford or John Owen-Jones or Colm Wilkinson or whoever the Phantom??? I know that I'm probably going to get thumbs down for saying this, but the phantom of the opera will not be as successful as it is now if michael did not originate the role. have any of you ever seen the original phantom of the opera music video with steve barton? he's pretty much gerard butler, but in the '80s. he wasn't exactly bad, but he wasn't really good either. I liked the movie for being as visually gorgeous as it was, and emmy and patrick did very good jobs.

And finally, Andrew Lloyd Webber came out later and said that he somewhat regretted the casting of Butler. He didn't have the voice for the role and it shows. Second, the Phantom isn't supposed to even be the least bit handsome. His good looks (which were non-existent) was not what lured Christine to the Phantom in the book or the play. It was the mystery and the sound of his voice that drove Christine's attraction for him. You fan girls seemed to be driven by your love of Butler more so than your love of the character.

Let's just forget for a moment that Crawford created the role and that his performance drove the box office during its initial run and the fact that he won every award you could win for a Broadway musical performance. Firstly, Butler's voice was so much weaker than Crawford's that they had to tone down the music. He could not even reach the high notes that Crawford could.

As much as I love Gerard Butler, Michael Crawford can actually hit the notes a little better. Gerry ends up flat most of the time. But, Gerry is definitely hotter and has a more powerful and emotional voice.
