Moving scene, man. One of the best scenes of the Wire. Bubbles was the most likable drug addict on a show ever. The actor was so robbed of Emmy consideration.
When I saw Bubbles turned out good, right at the end when his sister let him back in to the table, I cheered. Really made my day seeing that he had a good ending
such a moving scene. also just wanted to comment specifically on the fantastic writing and perfect acting. "couple days ago i took a walk down to druid hill park, right when the sun was goin' down, you know how the moment be like, trees throwin' the shadows and all." as bittersweet and impactful as anything keats or frost ever wrote...
This was Bubble's redemption. A true struggle to free himself from the bondage that everybody else can't seem to escape. Bubbles made it to the other side of the chess board, so he has the juice. He won.
Apparently, Andre Royo was approached by an actual drug addict at one point during filming, and the guy gave him some heroin, saying that Andre looked like he needed to get high more than he did. He later said he considered that his street Oscar.
The Bubbles character was so vital to the success of the show because they had to show that "other side" of the drug trade. It can't just be about the gangsters and the dealers. You have to show the effects of what they do. You have to have Bubbles, Sherrod, Johnny Weeks, etc... just to show the effects of the drug trade and what happens to those people directly involved.
Bubbles was such an amazing beautiful character. He didn't need to carry around guns and be a badass, he was just a real person and made The Wire an even better show.
The Wire did not get an Emmy nomination because the characters were so great that they blurred the line between acting and real life. Folks forgot that these people were actors. So it was kind of hard for them to really appreciate the depth of character development and portrayal it took Andre to give us Bubbles.
The same thing happened to the Color Purple, Oprah, Whoopi and co. did not get their Oscars and till this day, there hasn't been a black ensemble like that one.
Only those with a heart of stone cannot be moved by this. In the montage at the end of season 5 when you see him eating with his sister... probably my favourite moment in the whole 5 seasons
when people say S5 was weak, i agree on certain aspects, but then i just say two words "Late Editions" (this ep) . its the best the wire ever did i think
@AndyJmovies Completely agree. This ep slightly beats out Middle Ground and Final Grades for me. This scene and the final 15 minutes or so run the gamut of emotions. Brilliant writing by Pelecanos.
As a writer myself, I'm blown away by dialogue like this. It's powerful but natural. You never think "why did he use that word?" -The Wire has taught me the value of this realism. It's no excuse to say "hey I've written it, so expect that".
{SPOILERS on plot prior to video}
What a performance too. The building despair I felt when I knew that Sherrod was going to be killed by that cooked shot. Then the shock of Bubbles in the station- that emotion isn't eleased until this.
bubbles on the wire went through everything. he's one of my favorite characters on the wire. when i saw this part i cried. when i saw the last episode and during the montage when bubbles finally had dinner with his sister and neice i was soooo happy. but i fault bad for dookie. i did not wanna see dookie like that.
@chibangin007 im married man in my 30s...and the sence where bubbles breaks down in the hospital..when someone comes to see him..made me cry to....1 of the hardet bits of tv ive ever watched
Agreed. Incredible performances by Andre episode to episode. It's funny because they only had him scheduled for 7 episodes but he did so good they kept him in the show.
@cruffrider5 you're not lying man, i want whoever judges those emmy awards to watch this scene, look me in the eye, and tell me that the Sopranoes or Entourage or some other dumb show had better acting than this. NO FUCKIN WAY!
I clapped too when they did. Man, it was just inevitable.

Honestly, I thought Bubbles would die from OD at like the first episode lol. Bubbles never popped and I'm very proud of him.

The Wire pulls no punches, it shows the worst of life and it really tries to hammer home the point that there is very rarely a happy ending.
BUT With Bubbles, they show that, there is goodness in this world, there are those who turn it around from the lowest of lows.
If they didn't have a character like bubbles, The Wire wouldn't be realistic.

One of my favourite scenes. Felt so happy that he got clean. Shame that Dookie got hooked it on, I suppose it is one big circle
