Congratulations for your music and your instruments!
I have the feeling that croatian pipe music is the most "occidental" music from the balkans. It reminds me italian zampogna music a little bit. Am i right? :-)
IMHO, you are right. Keep in mind though that this instrument is not from the Mediterranian region of Croatia. Instead, it's from the Northern (Drava) region, the area partly belonging to Hungary. The instrument belongs to the family of Carpathian Area Bagpipes, but the music is more Mediterranian than Carpathian. IMHO, Croatian bagpipe music, in general, is (completely) different from the typical Balkan sound, to my ears.
I didn't know this region of Croatia. To my ears it is also very different from the other balkanic musics. It is interesting you precise that this bagpipe is from the northern region near Hungary and not from the mediterranean damltaian part. I thought it is was the mediterranean croatia because the melody you play and the rythm are very similar to italian pipe music.
But congratulations again and thanks for sharing this music with everybody.
no no no... The norther bagpipe is like the hungarian, nothern serbian bagpipe... bute the Dalmatian Metiteranian Bagpipe is like the Greek Bagpipe wich where played by Pontiak Greeks from Constantinopel and Southern Greece...
that's true. hungarian pipes actually play in the mixolydian mode like GHP's except it has a contra bore. the serbian and croatian pipes sound in A but play on the second. like a lot of Balkan music, it uses the same mode as the scale on these pipes. even macedonian and bulgarian use this mode (in the music, i know the pipes are in the mixolydian mode).
Most Hungarian pipes has a flea hole that makes possible to play a chromatic scale, just like Macedonian pipes. Half of Hungarian pipe music is in A minor.
Wow. What a clever bagpipe...hahaha

right. i am macedonian and the gajda has a flea hole to alter pitches as well.

I have beautiful Macedonian gajda. I love its sound, Macedonia is a "great power" in piping music.
nemethmik 4 years ago
yup, i saw richard playing it. mine is in Bb, his is in A. i actually prefer the darker sound of A than Bb, but many Macedonians prefer Bb.
gajda1984 4 years ago
I love this pipe just because it has a bright and such a happy sound...it makes me happy to hear it :-)
