'...no wonder Britain is broken with attitudes like that in the 80's...'
Amazing to deduce an entire social analysis of present day Britain from 30 seconds of advertising comedy! My hat off to you...
It was indeed Stocker's Lock. The boat was actually on a platform hoisted up and down by a massive crane! Well they could hardly empty a lock on the GUC 35 times in half an hour, could they?
My part in that day? The lockkeeper - that's me, that was. Weird looking at him now...
The pipe is a laugh. I had smoked one briefly in my 20's. So I bought a 30 bob 'second' to remind myself. I remembered how hard it is to light one. They had a bunch of expensive brand new, unused 'gold spot' Dunhills in the waiting-room at the audition. I declined and instead filled and lit mine several times while waiting to go it. When I got in they said ‘OK, fill the pipe and light it.’ I mimed filling it, successfully lit up with a single match, and sat back puffing gently away...
...idly wondering how many of my competitors had failed to get their new freshly-filled 100 quid Dunhills going. Pretty sure that wheeze helped get me the job.
Later I went for the wardrobe fitting. I said ‘um... so what about the pipe. Have you picked one?’ They said ‘Oh, you looked pretty comfortable with your own. We’ll go with that...’ 40 or 50 grand to make the commercial - starring a 30 bob pipe from a ‘seconds’ box!
I've heard Condors tobacco is the best selling brand in the UK. More specifically, it's supposed to be the Condors Mild variety (now known as Condors Blended). I've heard all this but can someone confirm this for me?
its got a liquid lavender hand soap room note with a dark woody flavour..used in a medium peterson apple rustic with moisture trap,,,this blend needs a dedicated briar...test it out in that old cob pipe before christening that dunhill pipe
STILL Legal? By 1970, and especially January 1971, it wasn't. But I guess that this is a British commercial, so it would be diufferent ' [from the Briish slang used].
Canal enthusiasts will recognise the location as being Stocker's Lock near Rickmansworth in Herts. Shame no footage available of the classic 'Submarine' Condor ad from around the same era.
I,sir, am in search of the condor.

@SteveCarras actually tobacco advertising (not cigarettes) was perfectly legal in the UK until 1991.

@filmnet I am referring to television advertising, of course.

It was in America at that time when cigarette adverts weren't legal, apart from cigar and pipe tobacco ads.
