Good movie overall, but Hammer should have done a little more research on this one... Gorgon myth tells that women were NOT turned to stone, only the men.
Well, they knew the boyfriend was an artist. Maybe they suspected that he carved a statue of her, then killed her and placed a statue in her place as some sort of bizarre M.O. Of course, they probably would have said that if it were the case.
Agreed, Peter Cushing is a icon of the classic horror film. Unlike today there is substance to these movies that keep you engrossed to a point of obsession. Every detail, every nuance of these movies is worthy of repetition. I frankly cannot say enough about these films when compared to todays hack and slash dreck.
@GoblinXXX Well, the stone part wasn't made public and best explanation was that fear made everyone want to say that an ordinary person caused all the murders rather than acknowledging someone beyond their knowledge. They probably could've done better though...
@StellianAriolus These are the COPS who suspect the boyfriend, and there've been 6 more cases like this-- They certainly know the condition of the "bodies", so why would they think a person did this at all? And even if "lovers sometimes quarrel", why would they suspect him of the other 6 petrifications?
It wasn't technically a Hollywood film since it was British, but I share your sentiment entirely. Too many filmmakers see themselves as businesspeople rather than artists and make utter tripe to appeal to the lowest and most mindless instincts in people to make a profit. Maybe this wouldn't happen if more filmmakers cared about creating masterpieces above making money.
thank you so much for verifying what i have known for so many years!!!!! i write vampire short stories in the old way...i leave some things to the reader's imagination which, to me, is the mark of a good writer!
I used to share that sentiment, but the more I learn about writing, filmmaking, any kind of art, the more I become convinced that there is no such thing as crafting a masterpiece. Masterpieces just happen. Usually by accident.

Well that's just rude; attacking a pregnant woman. And yes...bizarre logic to suspect the boyfriend of turning her to stone.

Oh yeah. Cushing played Doctor Who in the first film version - and, of course, that was Patrick Troughton. Nice one!
