dude your playing is awesome i love that heavy riffing!!! love your tone! i play a triple rec ... check out my band! not quite as technical but you know we got the grooves i think you might like haha... look up Bow Before Thy Grave listen to the songs Blonde Extensions, Prophet of Lies, and 666... have a great day!
I'm more of a Megadeth/Slayer and blues shred kind of John Sykes-ish player, but I love watching your videos, man. You have a great vibe and groove in your rhythms and showing off all these amps is always great to watch.
I know this video has been around for a while, but do you remember if any of the knobs were pulled? Hard to tell from the video. Also, do you remember what settings you had on the back? And of course a third question, when using the lead channel, how do you boost the volume so leads stand out in a live situation?
Hello Fearedse. An important question: I own a Mark IV and my band is going to record our first EP soon. On a few tests we did with SM 57 mics placed in front of a 4x12 cab(Celestion V30s speakers), we saw that the mic "clipped" (ie. too high volume) when we had the following volume settings: Lead Channel Volume set to 2, Master volume set to 2. No booster pedals in front. Your settings were : 5, 2 AND booster. How do we prevent mic clipping? I hope to get an answer soon! Keep up the great work!
Im looking for a new amp, and im kinda stuck between a Engl powerball-2, Mesa boogie dual recti and a mark iv. I play stuff like Amon Amarth, In flames, Parkway drive, Machine head, all in all, modern metal. Though i need an amp which can produce good cleans and more rock tones too.
I suppose the mark is more versile, but can it be brutal enough?
@ESP4thaWin I thought so too, or if were talking solely based on Ola's video. But then again, The Mark V is pretty tight considering its NOT boosted, whereas this Mark IV is boosted with the Maxon.
great record, man. have you used a lot of equalization while mixing and mastering? as if I believe the overview of amp settings you have your lead bass on 0 and equalizer bass freq are a little bit lowered. so where did all the low freq came from? mixing eq, mic position, or just outrageous amount of low freq the amp provides?
Almost the anniversary of this video and when i started watching your videos! The video I started on was your Mesa V Engl Shootout video and I was blown away by how awesome yet different the tones were. Keep the dragon breathing fire man!
loved it! well done bro,im pickin up my first mark lv very soon.I play the full range of rock to metal to chicken pickin.I thnk this mesa is gonna do the job.Thoughts?
yo dude i have an oldskool triple recto if you look on my vids you will see which one i am on about i am wanting to get more umph out of it any ideas?
@fearedse it's gotta be older than 1993; i've got a 1992 mk4 and it doesn't have the harmonics/mid switch or the graphic eq switch on the front panel. Ola, i'm assuming you can footswitch the reverb? If so, it's a version B (1993 and onward)
Does the Mark IV or V have that modern gain structure to it? I can hear gain but does it have that presence and attack of a say a Recto or Engl Savage?
@DopeSick408 I just traded my recto for a mark iv. It doesnt have that growling angryness the recto had but its just so tight and has way more gain .. a smoother gain. Even when you turn the gain way up on the mark iv it is still tight, but it sustains for days which is awesome. If you wanna hear what the mark v is like listen to BTBAM's new EP and Dream Theater's new song. Mark iv is lamb of god, dream theater's systematic chaos album.
@AutoDidactic26 Thanks man! I just tried out the Mark V and it nails the tone i was looking for. Tight, Fluid, Clarity and power this amp is the shit,
Wow man, I just came across your stuff on here and I have been jamming for 21 years myself. Pretty nice material. Are you still jamming with this particular band and where are you guys from?
@fontenotsean1 well since Feared is me generally yeah you could say I'm still doing the band :D. But I'm also playing in a lot more live active bands like Scarpoint and Sorcerer. Thanks for watching dude!
Finally a good demo of an amp/guitar! I read one of your advices for getting a good tone yesterday and they really helped me out! My amp is a humble Marshall MG30DFX but at last I got it to sound decent for its price, hehe. Not using too much gain and paying attention to the mids were revelations to me o.o... Keep rockin' bro!
You should get paid to demo gear. Great ear for tone. I have a few quick questions: What pickups are you using, why use the overdrive pedal and how do you dial it in, and lastly, is it possible to get this tone from a mark V? Thanks!
hey ola, ive never really used an overdrive before, are those ur exact settings on that pedal in the very beginning?? and are u just putting that before the amp between ur guitar and the amp??
Not to offend anyone here or the poster, but I notice that in every amp tryout/clip that you do, your tone sounds EXACTLY the same. I'm not really sure what to think. I would love to hear you play all of these amps by themselves, without an already mastered/recorded track behind them.
@darkshredder95 hey, i've got one two, try "Metal red" Middle 10, treble 10, bass 5, gain on 5, (and for really hard sounds put the reblecomp on and level 24% sustain 30%) you will be surprised
@EldubeG25 the only issue is how expensive mesa boogie are compared to line 6. line 6 is great for when your experimenting with effects and if you get the settings right it actually sounds alright. but, i dunno, it sounds too muffled, you dont really get the clear highs i'm looking for on my RG. also you cant always here the notes ringing out as when the gain is turned up it can sound quite fuzzy sometimes, especially on insane. i'm looking for something clear, and this has that killer tone.
Now i miss my Mark IV Shorthead / 4x12 Half 'n Half halfstackl ;-( I gave it away after buying my Axe FX Ultra... Not because of really better sound, but because of the feeling playing this hell of an amp :) At least they are in good peoples hands now who use them frequently. Nice playing and sound as always :)
Hey man, killer vids! im just curious to why you are using a maxion pedal with your rig. i heard it makes your picking louder from some people. i have a Mesa Roaster and im looking for a way to sharpen up the low end to get clearer "chugs". what would you recommend?
Whats about finding someone that lets you try some Mesa Pres? Like the Formula, Triaxis and all the others. It would be awesome to see them in action and to hear your opinion. I known its hard to find owners with all this preamps, but it would be very interesting.
you're like rhythm god! I'm pretty sure you spend hours practicing but the thing I've always wanted to know is how long have you been playing? Mr. Englund.
Question: is the EQ on and set like this when you recorded the tracks for the song? i have a Mark V and ive never tried it set like that. is it so you have the right amount of Mid for recording?
btw, your vids are great keep on doing what you're doing its great to hear the amps like this
@choirofthedead yes this is how the eq was set for the recording. You have to understand though that a perfect mic'd sound doesn't necessarily sound good in the room. I adjust after what sound I'm getting with the microphone.
oh ok i see. i just did some recordings with the eq set a little differently but it didnt sound as nice as you have it. i think ive listened to this song and the song you did for the Framus Cobra vid collectively like 50 times i love these songs. this vid actually really helped me in choosing the mark V before i bought it. after about 2 minutes in i was like man this guy must be from sweden haha! i know my swedish death metal i guess
@fearedse we just went through that in the studio last week lol. Sounded awesome in room and we just didn't like we got in the mic. But we solved it quick. Using Ola's advice.
hey man, i dont wana sound like an ignorant douche, but i've played shit like krankensteins and dual, triple rectifiers, all that stuff, and hated the way they sound... how do u make EVERY amp sound killer? it's crazy dude! is it in the mastering or somethin? (again i sound ignorant, i dont know shit about recording) i just dont get it
@santabamf666 dude, it's all about what guitar/pickups/picks, how to dial an amp, how to play hard on the strings etc. if you can't make a dual rectifier sound good, there is a problem somewhere.
@fearedse yea, i only played the mesa at gutar center for like 10 minutes, didn't really take the time to putts with it, cuz there was a lot of fuckin nobs hahaha.
@fearedse dude, could you make a review of the ENGL gigmaster? they seem to be interesting, but there is no shop that has one in my region. awesome playing, just like always :D
@santabamf666 Dual Rectifiers sound pretty awful without an OD pedal in the chain IMHO. The only way I got one to sound good on its own was by turning the gain WAY down and slightly scooping the mids (and I never scoop my mids). However, throw a TS-9 or OD808 in front of it, run it through a Trad or Recto 2x12 like our friend has done here in this video, and its one of the best modern metal tones ever. I always go to the Dual Rectifier+TS-9 through a Marshall 1960AV in the studio.
Your videos are awesome..i'm into home recording myself and i'm pretty much set with my 6505+ although i'm torn between using an OD to record or just leave it. I love how the OD tightens the sound up and cuts through better but I hate the excess picking noise it creates. Do you recommend recording with a boost or without? Or is it just personal preference?
You are one of the few people I've seen who have actually managed to make the Mark IV sound as aggressive (imo even more juicy , thus better) as the Dual Rectifier. Amazing tone man. I want to ask you though how can you play so loud (Ld Master at 4,5 and output lvl at 2) and not have negative feedback and at the same time not making the mics to clip. I 'd really like to have this question answered. Thanks.
Dude, you should make a faq-section somewhere in your blog or something, in order not having to answer stupid questions like: which one is your favorite guitar?

@TheGarfi
ENGL is the all round best if you want really tight sounds IMO, but you may want to investigate the Peavey 6505.
Madbutcher305 3 weeks ago
@Madbutcher305 I already have a 5150, but i need cleans

Ahh, then I'd go for the Mark IV. So long as you have a tubescreamer or equivalent it can do brutal stuff.

Are they stock pickups in that Ibanez and is this distortion purely from the Mesa amp, no additional enhancement pedals or anything??

oh ok i see. i just did some recordings with the eq set a little differently but it didnt sound as nice as you have it. i think ive listened to this song and the song you did for the Framus Cobra vid collectively like 50 times i love these songs. this vid actually really helped me in choosing the mark V before i bought it. after about 2 minutes in i was like man this guy must be from sweden haha! i know my swedish death metal i guess

@fearedse we just went through that in the studio last week lol. Sounded awesome in room and we just didn't like we got in the mic. But we solved it quick. Using Ola's advice.

Dude I plan on getting a Mark V or Triple Rec, Would I be able to get a sound like yours by replacing the Maxon OD808 with a Tube Screamer?
Gforcelover 1 year ago
@Gforcelover
maxon OD808 eats ibanez ts9 (especially older versions)

That's pretty awesome man! Congrats on your skills & awesome tone!

@69stringibanez drop b flat. all strings down two whole steps and the lowest string is down another step.

hey man, i dont wana sound like an ignorant douche, but i've played shit like krankensteins and dual, triple rectifiers, all that stuff, and hated the way they sound... how do u make EVERY amp sound killer? it's crazy dude! is it in the mastering or somethin? (again i sound ignorant, i dont know shit about recording) i just dont get it
santabamf666 1 year ago
@santabamf666 dude, it's all about what guitar/pickups/picks, how to dial an amp, how to play hard on the strings etc. if you can't make a dual rectifier sound good, there is a problem somewhere.
fearedse 1 year ago
@fearedse yea, i only played the mesa at gutar center for like 10 minutes, didn't really take the time to putts with it, cuz there was a lot of fuckin nobs hahaha.
santabamf666 1 year ago
@santabamf666 yeah alla those knobs are scary man, but when you get the logic there's no real magic behind them...

@fearedse just played the MKV at guitar center HOLY SHIT talk about djenty

Would you say there is a big difference between the Mesa Roadster and Dual Rectifier cabs?

great sound..blows the Axefx away beyond belief

Your videos are awesome..i'm into home recording myself and i'm pretty much set with my 6505+ although i'm torn between using an OD to record or just leave it. I love how the OD tightens the sound up and cuts through better but I hate the excess picking noise it creates. Do you recommend recording with a boost or without? Or is it just personal preference?

THAT is tone, my dear friends!
ScArKiLLa45 1 year ago
You are one of the few people I've seen who have actually managed to make the Mark IV sound as aggressive (imo even more juicy , thus better) as the Dual Rectifier. Amazing tone man. I want to ask you though how can you play so loud (Ld Master at 4,5 and output lvl at 2) and not have negative feedback and at the same time not making the mics to clip. I 'd really like to have this question answered. Thanks.

Dude, you should make a faq-section somewhere in your blog or something, in order not having to answer stupid questions like: which one is your favorite guitar?
