2009 Utica Peregrine Falcons part 1

Do they hunt smaller birds like finches. I scouted around and found that the bank is loaded with house finches. I have never seen so many house finches before. I also found a lot of starlings.

They hunt a wide variety of bird prey, but I don't often see them with anything as small as a finch. In several of the videos you will see finches singing right in front of them and the Peregrines hardly take any notice.

The Peregrine was formerly called the Duck Hawk and indeed the Utica pair have been seen with a few ducks. Other known prey of this pair include Woodcock, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Mourning Dove, Starling, Blue Jay and of course, their favorite - Pigeon.

I got to see them today. I had to step back next to the Radisson with a pair of binoculars to get a good view. I saw a tail stick out of the nesting box and then a head. That would be my first time seeing a pereguine falcon.

I saw them both today. Maya was on the nest tray and Tor was seen on several of his favorite nearby perches. They continue to take turns incubating on the nest tray. A hatch is now overdue by several days and we're beginning to worry that it might not happen. Still we hope!

I have been trying to see them this past week. I have been looking in the late afternoon with no success. Is it too late in the season?

This is great news! I will make a trip soon from Oneida to see them myself. In fact I believe that when I see them in person they will go on my life list. :) I hope they have a great and productive year.
