No, it's two different subjects. In this case, the first subject is the slow string music that opens the piece. It returns in brass and winds during the fast second subject.

Could anybody define Double Fugue? Is it two subjects playing the same note but at different pitches?

It sounds to me like there is TWO fugues here, the first one the slow one, the second one, the fast one, you know? So I've always guessed that is what it is...

a [single] fugue is a single theme treated fugally, a double fugue is TWO themes played together and also treated fugally. as acomposition student i only evermanaged to write SINGLE fugues!!!!
