I have the video of this performance, and it is outstanding. The sound quality here is awful. There is no such thing as too many trombones, particularly when one of them is Wycliff Gordon, from whom I have had one lesson -- enough for a lifetime.

Unbearable racket. Makes me want to listen to people like Jack Tea, Cutty Cutshall, Lou McGarity, Vic Dickenson etc... Guys with real concept and solo style, and musical identity. And when I want modern jazz trombone, I'll head for J & K, Frank Rosolino, Bennie Green & Urbie Green. So, you can play 1000 notes a minute - who cares. The music gets lost. Too many notes - too much noise.
I love trombone but too many of them is just too heavy and not balanced! Awesome but too heavy to listen to! Oh do I miss Carl Fontana and Raymond Katarzynki who kept on playing : Play "behind"! They were and remain the BEST!!
nightingale = better...!! he totally owns the trombone...i saw him do a gig last year with a classical trombone quintet, he slotted right in and played it cool as you like...then did his own set. ANY bonist taking donna-lee (unaccompanied) at 280-odd bpm deserves undying love! :D
A contrabass trombone is the only trombone that is larger than a bass trombone. Contrabass bones are usually pitched in F, a 4rth lower than all other trombones that are in Bb. They are essentially a F Tuba with a cylindrical bore that has been unwrapped and shaped like a trombone... they're big...
What's with British trombonists - don't any of them have a website or myspace??? Could somebody help me and suggest who's the "best" guy based in London, I'm planning on taking a few lessons, and I don't know the local players...
I know that, worldwide, Wycliffe may be more famous, but i've known and worked with Mark over the years and i can assure you he is as good as or better than anyone that's ever lived. And he never has a bad day. And he's a nice dude. God, i hate him.
wycliffe is definately a blues player, he can sort of bop but he's got his blues/gospel chops complete, i wish he did more latin/bop and slide work like Nightingale
This is actually the first time I've heard Mark Nightingale and Wycliffe play together, and wow! It appears that when both players practice hard that experience will rule.. most people can't play better than Wycliffe so it is amazing to see him humbled on stage. I really enjoyed hearing Mark Nightingale play so well, and its nice to see the mutual respect :-D
Shows you that music and jazz is like a "world" and nobody is "the greatest". Instead a great, great team can be formed where each player is super and the whole is way better than you even imagine on your own.
I just love the interaction between Mark and Wycliffe. Wycliffe doesn't seem to run out of double high Bb power either!
i totally agree dude, i though he sounded just as good as wycliffe if not better, but u have 2 admit wycliffe has style, i mean he knows how 2 pump up a crowd, i know if i was there id probably pee my pants hearing such wonderful improvisation from both of them =]

@charley12345678901 He's playing an Edwards with a Monette in this video. He switched about a year ago. It's such a moot point. A trombone is like a running shoe... Usuain Bolt will still be one of the fastest dudes in the world regardless of what shoes he's wearing, Wynton will still be a bad motherfucker no matter if he's playing a garden hose or a Monette, and Wycliffe will still be a badass regardless of what he's playing.
@MrDopeydee somebody sounds jealous...
