  • f*** me it broke damn man i was so excited to find out if all those higgs bosen particle people where right or not ive done the math they are according to me but i need science to verify dam it

  • aren't you scared we could die?

  • yyou're dumb adzii1

  • Yeah oh well the machines up and running and they sent one beam around they wont start colliding till about january so :( im scared:(

  • @adzii1: Why would you think we could die?????

Because the news told you so? The LHC experiment is nothing new, its just bigger than any collider before. Dont buy into the apocalypse propoganda, because it is just that, propoganda.

  • Well people said it might cause at the speed of light with protons colliding might create a black hole but the ydid create ATLAS it prevents black holes and if there was a black hole it willl be unstable and collapse but im still scared :S

    Im only 13 :(

  • Maybe the news is trying to get money by saying it will make black holes ?

  • @adzii1 Yeah exactly, The major news networks always use fear tactics. You should know that. Look at how they treated the bird flu......

  • yeah and swine flu

  • where can you learn more about what cern is doing as of 2009?

  • the yare starting it up in november or early 2010 the yahvn't decided yet :D

  • It has already begun, experiments at sqrt(S) of 2.36TeV collision energy have already started (this is more then twice as powerful as any particle accelerator in the past).

Every year in Dec. CERN undergoes a yearly shutdown for maintenance and in this case to prepare the LHC to conduct collisions at 3.5TeV per beam (collision sqrt(S) = 7TeV)

Just thought id update you :P

  • But the machines off untill February hmm it takes about a month-year to get to 7TeV? so it will be around march when they collide at 7Tev?

  • They likely won't be conducting experiments at 7TeV per beam (14TeV collision, its nominal operation performance) until 2011.

They will be conducting physics at 3.5TeV per beam (7TeV collision) starting Feb. 20 2010.

This is 7 times more powerful then any particle accelerator before it, and will yield a lot of new physics.

They will generate a ton of new valuable data in 2010 running at 7TeV collision.

  • Dude they said "Restart in February 2010" so it hasn't been started...

  • Uh you just said it yourself RESTART, as in start again.

Collisions began on Nov. 23 2009 and were run for 23 days. Over 1 million collision events were performed at 900GeV collision energy, and about 100 000 events were performed at 2.36TeV (new world record in collision energy).

It was put in standby on Dec. 16, and is undergoing nQPS preparation and magnet conditioning for higher amp throughput so they can begin physics at 7TeV collion energy on Feb 20 2010

  • If you don't believe me and want to see some of the results for yourself, here is a link to a presentation given by the ATLAS, ALICE, CMS and LHCb teams regarding the experimental data they collected during the 23 days of collisions which started on Nov. 20 (and ended on Dec. 16)

  • Can CERN replace hyrdro generating plants someday as a means of supplying electricity to the world rather than the old way of buring the dangerous uraniium 236 235 because pcbs are dangerously stored in the earth and an alternative safe means of supplying hydro would be a better alternative. Industrial Electrician.

  • do research on Nikola tesla and geoelectical power stations we have the technologies to tap into the unimaginable amount of power produced buy the earth everyday the number are the earth produces enough power to electrify our world for 4000 years in one day no lie Google it the power the be can profit of this technology so you dont hear about it but there is no corporate censors on the net yet

  • The cows near Cern appear to be gaining intelligence and taking on human characteristics; perhaps through a process of quantum translocation?

  • LHC is great :D

  • LHC=Star Gate=Emergency Exit 2012

  • You=Conspiracy Theorist=Idiot

  • u might b so right it aint funny...who knows..!!

  • Im sure Paola would do more videos but first she propably has to get rid of Karsten Eggert.

    *Checking his hair*

"Zo, Paola vhat are yu doing afta work ?"

"If yu havent anyzing importent to do, ... i haf zis boddle of red vine ant vee could discuzz ze zeoretical propertees of gluon plazmah in cand'l light..."

    :-D

  • I wish they posted more videos.

  • Apparently it's a pleasure to go into the large hard on collider. ZING!

  • Great, learned another part of the picture. This stuff is why I don't pay for "T.V." any more.

  • Maybe change the title of the video to 'TOTEM Experiment' or 'Girth does matter' ;)

  • That's all very interesting but the question I REALLY need to know the Answer to, is what would happen if you stuck your finger into the particle beam!?!

  • *zzzzp* gone.

  • Your finger would transform into black hole. After you're sucked into this black hole, all that's left of you will be your finger as a black hole.

  • There was a case where a guy got hit in the face wtih a particle beam 50 years ago or something... I cant remeber the name, but the part oif his face that got hit never aged, lost all nerves.. was bassically stuck.. Man i need to find that article again, it was so awesome..

  • to narutojinrasengan...

".....if you stuck your finger into the particle beam!?! ..."

Ghastly! I imagine every cell in the affected area would die but still function, for a while, as if nothing was wrong. Then the affected area would slowly die and rot away. Partially affected cells, with their DNA blasted to shreds, would be prime candidates as baby cancer cells....

  • The legendary Anatoli Bugorski.

Wikipedia: "Reportedly, he saw a flash "brighter than a thousand suns", but did not feel any pain. The beam measured about 2,000 gray when it entered Bugorski's skull, and about 3,000 gray when it exited after colliding with the inside of his head."

"As it was believed that about 5 to 6 grays is enough to kill a person (...)"

However, Bugorski survived and even completed his Ph.D.,.

idk if that whole thing with the face never aging is true

  • Thanks for the work done, go ahead science !

  • SCIENCE FTW

  • darker ?? how can a particle that is smaller than the photons of lights have properties which only appear at the molecular level because of light ? if someone could explain what he meant , it would be much appreciated !

  • Protons are not smaller than photons, you probably mean that protons are too small to be detectable with the wavelengths of visible light (wavelength != size of the particle). But I can't think of an explanation for the expression "darker" in that context either, curious to see if someone can explain!

  • The usage of dark in this video (4:04 and following) is *analogous* to what we mean when we say a material is optically dark (or dense or opaque). In the optical context dark means that photons have a high probability of interacting when traversing the material.

Here dark means that strongly interacting particles (e.g. quarks) have a high probability of interacting when traversing the proton.

In this sense the proton is dark, and casts a strong interaction "shadow" of its own.

  • Thanks very much for that explanation. I was wondering if it had something to do with the "opacity", but it seemed counterintuitive that the expansion of the proton would increase opacity. Ah well, so much for intuition and particle physics ;o)

  • You're absolutely right!

Naively, there's is no reason to expect that the proton would become bigger - and darker, so to speak. But, it turns out, the the the effective size - referred to as the cross section - of the proton increases with the energy available for its strong interactions.

As you noted, sometimes it's best to check your intuition at the door when it comes to expectations about particle physics.

  • @

    solomsolomol :

Protons are much much bigger than photons. Photons do interact with protons or the nuclei of most elements. Think about this... The Proton has a mass of 1.672×10^−27 kg, the Photon has a mas of 0, This is why the photon some times it is considered as a wave not a particle (I like to think of it as a wavy particle lol). As the Proton increases in size and mass as it approaches the speed of light, It should be easier for Photons to bounce on it.

  • oh yeah thats what they live ffor at the CERN.

    xD

  • Thank you CERN and science for making my life more knowledgeable, easier, safer, and longer.

    ALL HAIL SCIENCE!!

Oh wait, we do not worship any part of science, we just try to understand nature and relish in her beauty.

  • The ultimate goal of all science is to empower and preserve individual human life.

  • I'm pretty sure the goal of science is to collect, organize, and categorise information. Science is, at it's most basic, a rigidly defined field of knowledge. The common people, as well as some funders of science projects have a goal you describe, but science is only a tool.

It's like how construction builds houses, but it's the people who build and plan for the houses that has the intention of people living there, not the construction.

  • These videos are really interesting!

  • When are they going to fire this bad boy up? 8D

  • I bet Paola has a hard time getting her work done with all the scientists trying to start a flirt with her. :-D

  • 5 stars for paola

    cheers

  • Can't wait till they fire this thing up ^_^

for you 666 guys of course you are gonna see stuff like that everywhere if you actively go looking for it. Plus revelations was written by a crazy old man, in code, in a cave high up in the mountains, so sorry if i don't think that it is very realiable

  • I love this. :D

  • And i recognize online trolls who cant count and keep repeating mad religious sect spam in a rather fruitless hunt for followers. LOL

There are five of them in the logo. Not to mention that only two of them really look like a six. I say its the hidden logo of......WOODSTOCK !

1969 ! I just added the 1 and left two sixes out aswell. You are wrong ! I am right !

CERN is run by a secret alliance of Woodstock veteran hippies. They plan to bring us world peace. Wake up, we must stop them :-D

  • LOL! Loved your comment.

  • the "d"+"p"= dimensional portal

    have a nice day :)

  • maybe it's all about the carbon atom with it's 6 protons 6 electrons and 6 neutrons, or something like that.

  • I like it. :)

  • yes in fact carbon nano tubes the strongest molecule found buy man has only 60 protons electron and neutrons each and can be made into the strongest ropes and metallics ever know to exist

  • Tinfoil hat time!

  • It's a good thing we know through Qi that the -real- number of the beast is 616 then!

Also, nice thought, but I count at least 5 sixes in there :P

  • Comment removed

  • lol. it would be more like 66666 going off what you're looking at.

  • Another scared ignorant talking shit.

    Is your stupidity intentional?

  • Movie Yeah
