Uhm... I think that EArendil is the right pronunciation, because Ea (with the umlaut above A) is not a diphthong, so it has to be pronounced EArendil, and not EErendil (with A intended as a second, long E)...
The problem is that she seems to say "Yarendil", but is a problem of accent and pronunciation in general: she seems a bit.. coarse!
By the way, I like it a lot. And Jerome Prandon is better as Aragorn, than as Judas.
i wisihthat they would bring it back and that a few actors would let younger actors do a veersion in the west end that would suit me perfectly tats if they came to dublin for audisions
I miss this show!..It was one of the most emotionally touching shows I've ever seen.
The elves performances especially were just so beautiful..and when Gandalf fought the Belrog..it was so dramatic I remember me and my friend crying into the interval as soon as we heard Frodo scream "GANDALF"
I'm really hoping for a DVD of the show, or at least a tour location coming near my home (though I know our stages just don't offer what this show needs, what with the moving stage and all...but maybe they'll find a way to make it work).
I get the chills watching this performance...is it just me?
Yes I'll admit that up close her "eyebrows" look weird but I see what the make-up artist was trying to do. Thats a very big stage with a very large audience andthus a very large distance between actress and audience. When they have the camera far away you can see how those markings sharpen her features and lengthens her face giving it an eretheral quality making her more elf-like. Its quite nice but I'm a stage actress anyway so I'm used to the weird and heavy make-up that nessasary for this.
I love how they worked the motif of two kinds of elves into the musical aswell. The more enlightened elves of Rivendell and the more primordial elves of Lothlorien.
my teacher is richard brown and was the musical director for this production in toronto an london and oldbluescott said they did pronounce it right the lyrics were all checked by the genius's at oxford university and they have studied tolkeinnology for years so i think they are more qualified to say it correct. and this song is in high elvish not middle elvish so it is correct :D
@snowwhiteandjazz its all part of stage make-up. Each character has something to help the audience remember who is who and to emphasize the character. Like the scar along Legolas' face.
@Serena2009ification A matter of opinion. I'm not a fan of it, but if not exactly suitable to the character. It's great work for stage makeup. So technically, it's FANTASTIC make-up, just on the wrong people.
this musical was based on the BOOK of Lord of the Rings... not the movie. it is not intended to resemble the movie in any sense at all, and the elves in this are much different to Peter Jackson's interpretation of the elves.I saw it in London and it was phenomenal.
I agree that it's not like the movie, but it's not like the book either. There's only one time when Arwen is only briefly mentioned in the book. Her and Aragorn's story is found in the appendices of the book. It's kind of a hybrid of the two.
Actually, I recant...it's more like the movie than the book. There's parts that they leave out from the movie, but it's more based on the movie definately.
It is based off the book, the Tolkien Scion had a (minor) hand in the writing and I was lucky enough see the closing night with the speeches. There he explained that the Musicals original ending was a canon his father wanted to explore; what happens with Gollum if they hadn't met Faramir and if Sam had been nice.
It's certainly a bit of a hybrid in terms of what scenes they chose but it doesn't follow the movies plot - if it does have similarities it differs on its own route quickly enough.
What I was focusing on is all the parts that Arwen has. She is separate from the original books, her and Aragorn's story. That part is definitely more of a dynamic from the movie, just expanded upon.
If you say, I think its just more 'for the same reason' that they include her, rather than 'to copy the movie'.
They're short of female characters and she's one of the few they could introduce. A musical without Soprano's/women singers will get old quick. She has no part in the plot of the musical after this song - but I don't think any of this can be definitive.
Very true. She does have a really good voice too. I've always loved the story of Arwen and Aragorn (it's the hopeless romantic in me), I'm glad they added it in.

I hope to see this one day live in my life time. I grew up on the books and not the music, and know for a fact tolken loved music, there are many songs they sing in the book.

DARN IT!!! looks like ill have to convince my mom to let me go to london before it closes. Thanks for the info yak182, i asked the same question on another page and NO ONE would reply!
Am i the only one who thought the hand movments were extremly cool! Sometimes something so simple can be the most spectacular part of a whole big thing! Also BEAUTIFUL singing voice!!!!
This musical I studied more about it and the movements they use are a combination of prayer movements done in India and Arabia and many more things from around the world. Even the music is a combination of instruments and voice techniques. The candle movements are even from different parts of the world.
have seen it at london at 10th of april, absolutely amazing, especially the ringwraith!!! gandalf's voice is the gentlest. the balrog has been so impressive! ^^
i saw it last night , was absolutely amazing, does neone know where i can get a good movie shot of the dark riders on stage, they were fantastically done
Every review on this makes it bad but to be honest, i've seen it twice and I've enjoyed it so much. I thought first time, how the hell are they gonna make that into a musical? but they do it really well, definetly one you need to see!
I think this is my least favorite song on the soundtrack. And they look silly with those candles on their hands. I don't know, maybe it's better in person, but it just doesn't seem to fit for me. The beginning is good, if they had just left it as a little ditty for Arwen to sing, I think I would have liked it better.
Ive read the books a few times and I seen the show in October. It blew me away! I went in a bit sceptical coz I couldnt see how they could create middle earth on a stage but I thought they worked miricles and captured it beutifuly. Especialy the destroying of the ring, that was a very moving scene.
the musical is fantastic! hard core LOTR fans need to remember the book is about wizards and elfs and magic rings, not a musical representation of something serious like the Vietnam War or the holocost.Chill out. If it doesn't suit u then fine but stop being sooooooo picky.
Music: great. Sets, costumes and lighting: Great. Story: we know it works, but somehow the creative crew didn't know how to bring it together. My friend and I were waiting for the "Springtime for Saruman" number
this musical isnt bad! its amazing!! and i love the lotr books and this is carrying on tolkiens vision he wanted his works to inspire!! the effects are amazing! the music is incredible! go and see it then judge it! just dont slag it off to others that think its sooo worthwhile
Who said it's supposed to be really bad? There are people who don't like it, but there are also a great many people who do like it! And most of the people who are slating will have refused point black to go and see it in the first place! (though I do acknowledge that the comments below aren't all positive and some speak from experience). xxx
It was the toronto production that got bad reviews but the people who saw it said that it was amazing and it got mixed reviews in london- i think it looks amazing and really wish that i could see it...unfortunately im in NY :(
I don`t know where you have heard such a thing. he lotr musical is not bad, its Amazing! And the critics feel so too so really, i can`t seem to understand you. Go and see it and you won`t be dissapointed. xD

well...I saw the show and I must admit that I was bored most of the time. Sure, the set was amazing but the few songs that there were didn't convince me at all. Take this one, is that really supposed to be elvish kind of stuff? Honestly..
It would have been better without the songs, a great and stunning theatre-play, not a wannabe-musical.
Well you are entitled to your opinion...but in defense...in the book they were always singing songs, and as this is a blessing ritual why not have singing..they do in church. Sorry you were bored
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah, its not that I mind the fact that they were singing, Tolkien works a lot with songs and poems in his books, but I was more disturbed by the way how they were singing. The hobbit songs were the ones that were most fitting but I thought that the elvish ones were often well..out of character. Just didn't sound elvish to me..and with all the hand-movements..
And I'm very sorry that i was bored as well, seeing that I like the books so very much. :)
I went to see it last July and I was amazed by what they achieved. What an amazing musical it is! I can't understand how you can be bored watching such an outstanding performance!! On the other hand, I DO understand why you don't like the Elvish songs or the hand movements. It looked more like something Asian or so than Elvish to me. I didn't like that at all, but I still think the songs are beautiful. The hobbits songs were fantastic though, exactly the way they should be!
well, if you /know/ elvish and the way they pronounce things, that's how you can tell. I /do/ know elvish, and I think for the most part they were pronouncing it correctly, there were a few parts that sounded off, but not too bad. The only thing that is kind of off from this is Earendil, how it's pronounced. E and A are separately pronounced, eh-ar-en-deel is how it is spoken.
This summer me and my friend on holiday in London. In one week time we went to see the musical twice. It was amazing and we both agree if we could we would go again.
I was stunned by the set when i went i was just like OMG all the way through. We were sat in the grand circle so the view was stunning and the hobbits came and talked to us at the start lol it was so funny

TT-TT This is so unfair...I so wish we had these wonderful musicals in our country. Unfortunately, they don't even tour here.
This musical is so amazing! I wish it didn't have to close even if I never get to see it live...

Am i the only one who thought the hand movments were extremly cool! Sometimes something so simple can be the most spectacular part of a whole big thing! Also BEAUTIFUL singing voice!!!!
p.s anyone know if it's coming to the U.S?
ptnowand4always 3 years ago
it was in toronto mate, that was ur best bet of seeing it.
yak182 3 years ago
This musical I studied more about it and the movements they use are a combination of prayer movements done in India and Arabia and many more things from around the world. Even the music is a combination of instruments and voice techniques. The candle movements are even from different parts of the world.
musicalartfreak 3 years ago
It's closing? o 3o
The signs told me (when I went to see it) that it was going to Australia... ^^;;
Oh, and the new Galdriel sounds almost exactly like the original, so there's no problems there for anyone who was wondering. ^^
Jengingerpeps92 3 years ago
yeah its goin germany first, then doing new zeland and austrailia, then in like 2010 there doin a tour of the uk, but itll be a smaller production.

Every review on this makes it bad but to be honest, i've seen it twice and I've enjoyed it so much. I thought first time, how the hell are they gonna make that into a musical? but they do it really well, definetly one you need to see!
LoveLifeLikeLindsay 3 years ago
this looks ok actually... thought it would be much shitter than this...
thejamesholz 3 years ago
I think this is my least favorite song on the soundtrack. And they look silly with those candles on their hands. I don't know, maybe it's better in person, but it just doesn't seem to fit for me. The beginning is good, if they had just left it as a little ditty for Arwen to sing, I think I would have liked it better.
lucideyes 3 years ago
I went last week. Its was fantastic and moving!

Is this coming to the U. S.? Cause i can't go to london or toronto! Let's bring this musical to America!

Arwen:
Star of Earendil look down, hear our cry
Ever shining perfect light, emblazon the sky
Heed us as to thee we sing
Enlighten us in the hope you bring
Guide our way and aid us from on high

i would recomend this 2 any1, im not even a big LOTR fan but i went and it was the best theatrical experience of my life!!!
standup22 3 years ago
Ive read the books a few times and I seen the show in October. It blew me away! I went in a bit sceptical coz I couldnt see how they could create middle earth on a stage but I thought they worked miricles and captured it beutifuly. Especialy the destroying of the ring, that was a very moving scene.

I just don't see elves as the belter types
elvenlove 4 years ago 3
the musical is fantastic! hard core LOTR fans need to remember the book is about wizards and elfs and magic rings, not a musical representation of something serious like the Vietnam War or the holocost.Chill out. If it doesn't suit u then fine but stop being sooooooo picky.
realgoodfun10 4 years ago 3
you know they did that too... they called it miss saigon! hugely successful! not nearly as pulled apart as this!! xxx

Music: great. Sets, costumes and lighting: Great. Story: we know it works, but somehow the creative crew didn't know how to bring it together. My friend and I were waiting for the "Springtime for Saruman" number

i know lotr the musical is supposed to be really bad but i still wish i could have seen it!
sigsox 4 years ago
Who said it's supposed to be really bad? There are people who don't like it, but there are also a great many people who do like it! And most of the people who are slating will have refused point black to go and see it in the first place! (though I do acknowledge that the comments below aren't all positive and some speak from experience). xxx

It was the toronto production that got bad reviews but the people who saw it said that it was amazing and it got mixed reviews in london- i think it looks amazing and really wish that i could see it...unfortunately im in NY :(

well...I saw the show and I must admit that I was bored most of the time. Sure, the set was amazing but the few songs that there were didn't convince me at all. Take this one, is that really supposed to be elvish kind of stuff? Honestly..
It would have been better without the songs, a great and stunning theatre-play, not a wannabe-musical.
Sernyria 4 years ago
Well you are entitled to your opinion...but in defense...in the book they were always singing songs, and as this is a blessing ritual why not have singing..they do in church. Sorry you were bored

yeah, its not that I mind the fact that they were singing, Tolkien works a lot with songs and poems in his books, but I was more disturbed by the way how they were singing. The hobbit songs were the ones that were most fitting but I thought that the elvish ones were often well..out of character. Just didn't sound elvish to me..and with all the hand-movements..
And I'm very sorry that i was bored as well, seeing that I like the books so very much. :)
Sernyria 4 years ago
I went to see it last July and I was amazed by what they achieved. What an amazing musical it is! I can't understand how you can be bored watching such an outstanding performance!! On the other hand, I DO understand why you don't like the Elvish songs or the hand movements. It looked more like something Asian or so than Elvish to me. I didn't like that at all, but I still think the songs are beautiful. The hobbits songs were fantastic though, exactly the way they should be!
LaChicaHolandesa 4 years ago
what do u mean didn't sound elvish?
they where sometimes SUNG in elvish
well, its your own opinion... hope you like other things
SnapeFan42 4 years ago
well, if you /know/ elvish and the way they pronounce things, that's how you can tell.

Visually it's beautiful, but I wish the music was less Broadway and more Irish Celtic... like Anúna.
