Thank you for mentioning this. It's been so long since the show debuted, nearly four decades, I forgot how the "original, direct, pure" version sounded!

As a rule I prefer any song sung straight. Later performers often take far too many liberties with the "spine" of the song. The result is a net loss musically.

To make their own mark, later singers add little flourishes that when added up, detract from rather than contribute to the original melody.
