  • Looks like the old girl was back in the same conditions she had seen many times in the Minch before she went to New Zealand. My father was at sea for 40 years and said this was the most sea worthy vessel he ever sailed in, she could sail in anything.

  • The InterIsalnd Ferrys in New Zealand are the only true commercial link between the two Islands. If these ships "DO NOT SAIL" commerce is effected greatly. The Captains of these Boats are some of the best if not the best in the world at there Jobs, Cooks Straight is one of the most dangerous peices of water in the world also, Life must go on in NZ and the Kiwis accept this as part of our lives. The Captains do not hate us or there fellow man the have a job to do and they do it very very well.

  • @BH64Mustang Slightly incorrect there dude, Do you actually know who owns bluebridge and what they do? Bluebridge holds just an important link as do interislander, with bluebridge being set up for freight rather than passengers like the interislander.

  • this is obviously NOT the caribou. as the caribou looks nothing like this except the similar colors. as the caribou has a PAIR of blue stacks at the back, and the shape of the front is different.the bridge is different than that one. JUST GOOGLE it.

  • FYI to anyone seeing the video & reading the comments(especially the top comment)--this is NOT one of the Newfoundland ferries crossing between North Sydney,NS & Port Aux Basques,Nfld!! -- the location of this ferry is overseas from Canada!-- GordNS

  • i was on working on this ferry an this is whoat it use to be like on rough weather going across cook strait in new zealand when she was rough boy she was a good ship, toll would not sail we loaded up trucks with there drivers an wouldent take extra passengers it up to 9hrs tog get across compared to a normal crossing was 3 1/2 hrs

  • wonkytonkbotty, wtF are you TALKing about???

  • @easye1961 The Suilven before it was used for Strait Shipping. Duh. :S

  • Was the captain drunk or just depressed and suicidal when he left port? Maybe he hates his fellow man?!

  • The Suilven is the Isle of Lewis' "mommy". It retired to Zealand when IoL took over the Ullapool-Stornoway shift.

  • it is definetly cook strait.... i recognize the rubbish bin at the start.....

  • i think you are mistaken the suiiven was owned by calmac prior to strait shipping & plied the route between ullapool &stornaway for her entire life before being sold & endingup in Newe Zealand then Fiji, if you look closly on the funnel you can quite clearly see the calmac roundal, usually depicting a highland warrior whith a claymore & targe(shield) !

  • @athole1954

no it was the rampant lion me hinks lol!!!!

  • @stuartmac88 sorry got it wrong, but the correct tem is "lion rampant" as in the scottish royal flag, thanks again for putting me right

  • @athole1954

you were part right with your original answer, mv hebrides and mv clansman

carries a highlander on thier bow

  • I've been on that boat when it was used from Ullapool to Lewis in Scotland.

  • wicked video.the suilven is now traveling across the bligh water in fiji but the seas are no way near as rough.

  • just like what happen to the princess of the stars in the philippines the only difference is it sank and more than 800 passengers where killed and less than only 50 passengers survived the tragedy.

  • horoble yeah.............

  • although this looks horrific, its not all that unusual or dangerous, considering your careful

  • ive experienced tht when our ship going toward england suffered this.nothing went wrong.i thank the company which published this.i was realy scared after the jouney but then i made belive that .....................................................

  • I dreaded going on the Suilven as a kid, travelling from Ullapool to Stornoway was a nightmare and I remember once being stuck outside Stornoway Harbour as the seas were so rough the boat couldn't go back or carry on it's journey!!!!! - That boat give's me bad childhood memories!!! LOL!

  • @donjamo HAH! Oh my god it's scary how close you're story is to mine...

You think the ship is cursed? It's been sold and everyone always sells it again!

  • OMG !!!! I would be so scared Just looking at the video make's me seasick I hate the water

  • Hey, is it New Zealand, Scotland or Croatia????????

  • New Zealand just coming out of Wellington Harbour

  • what a wimp that mi1964amigo must be, there is nothing better than a bit of movement on a boat.

  • This does not read like a comment from someone with personal experience of that much "movement on a boat".

  • My granfather captained this boat in the hebrideas (Scotland)

  • Looks like a typical winter Cook Strait crossing to me. Not that unusual really. When it's *really* bad (ie. worse than this), the ships don't run at all.

  • The Suilven would go out in anything.

  • That day the swells were up to 12-14 metres

  • Very strong sea!!!

  • I miss Serving in US Coast Guard!!

  • The thought that helpless and terrified live animals were on this makes me feel sick for them. Sometimes I hate all mankind.

  • what the hell are you on about????? its a car ferry in the cook strait of new zealand the only animals on there are a few hardy sheep, maybe. Pull your head in and harden up!!!

  • What the hell are YOU on about?????????? I read that it was full of animals. Animals have no choice whether they are forced on a vessel or not, they would be shit scared. If 'hardening up' means being a complete discompassionate idiot, I'll stay as 'soft' as I am, thanks!!! Save your comments for someone on your own level.

  • Suilven carried frieght only it wasnt a car ferry! there other ship "Straitsmen" carried alot of stock onboard in pens. Today Strait Shippings vessels the "Santa Regina" and "Monte Stello" carry cars and passengers as well as freight across cookstrait

  • Comment removed

  • it used to be a car ferry

  • why is this exactly the same video as "Newfoundland Ferry in massive waves!!" as posted by DylanLovesArielle. Allegedly "This is a video of the ferry (The Caribou) operating between Port Aux Basques, NF and North Sydney, NS. As you watch remember that this is a ferry that carries 1200 passengers, with 2 vehicle decks holding 370 automobiles and 77 tractor trailers. It is one of, if not the largest, commercial ferries in Canada."

  • Read all the comments on this video!

  • That would really answer my question but I have found the answer on naturewatch dot org. It is a cargo ship transportinglive animals. (The ship used to run from the Isle of Lewis to the scottish manland) i.e. DylanLovesArielle is wrong.

  • wtf

  • That's pretty impressive. As a regular visitor to NZ I've taken the car ferry from Wellington (north island) across the straits to Picton (south island) many times and it was never like that.(thank goodness)

  • I work with the bosun who was on the ship that day, he reckons the swells were about 15 metres high!

  • That is amazing! 15meters swell is just unbelievable. Ive been in some pretty bad swell in the Bay of Biscay ,but nothing close to 15meters.

  • Yea i was in some pretty crazy weather in the bay of biscay on a small general cargo. Can not wait to go back.

  • The ship is the MV Suilven. And its the Cook strait in between the north and south islands of New Zealand....and thats a good day.

  • Missed wakeboarding opportunity!

  • hey where are going?

  • Fuckk that

  • damn, thats crazy

  • ha! that must of really cost car insurance companies. they should strap your cars 2 the ferry like those lorries which carry cars do. i don't know if they already do that but i don't really care coz, 1: i like damage and whatever and 2: i'm only 13 so even a dumb person knows that i don't drive a car or have a car or whatever ............... a car. and 1 more thing, who care's what type of boat it is, it's a ferry that going up and down in the sea, that all we need 2 know!

  • This is a ferry crossing the Cook Strait near Wellington, New Zealand. It is filmed from the end of Queens drive in Lyall Bay. See also planes arriving in rough weather in wellington.

  • Dear dear doctor, this ship is indeed the`Suilven` an ex Caledonian MacBrayne ferry which plied between Ullapool and Stornoway on the Western Isles of Scotland, before being sold to NZ over 10 years ago.

She was and still is by her performance a fine ship,

  • wow!

  • Why is everyone getting into a tizz about this video ?

Does it really matter which ferry it is ? this is YT not the NY Times. There's a better video, well same thing with sound, makes if much more fun, but folks are screaming about that too, talk about retentive !

  • Go to google and search "Suilven hitting heavy swell as it exited" and you will find a whole site about this story and the video.

  • acutually i made a mistake its the atlantic frieghter that has the rear bridgehouse sorry

  • yeah, that has already been established.

  • This is not a Marine Atlantic vessel and this video was not taken in Newfoundland. Look at the company logo on the funnel and it isn't the Marine Atlantic logo. I think it might be from the Cook Strait in New Zealand in Feb. 2002 (M/V Sulliven?).

  • I have a url that proves the identity of the ship as the Suilven but I can't post it.

  • @BootsSiR Hi do you know who owns the footage or first uploaded the footage of this video. We would like to use it for a NZ programme.

  • NTV news reported that its the Leif Erickson

  • This footage is of a ship called the "Suilven" hitting heavy swell as it exited Wellington Heads and entered Cook Strait, early afternoon 6 February 2002.

  • do you have anything to back this up?

  • This is NOT a Newfoundland Ferry. I am an Engineer with Marine Atlantic and this is not a vessel operating between Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Canada AM and other news channels have been miss reporting.

  • Interesting.... I didn't know this was in the news.

  • but this is definitely a Marine Atlantic ferry though right?

  • both the caribou and joseph and clara smallwood have double stacks at the rear the lief ericson has her bridge at the rear im pretty sure its the bond

  • well guys im pretty sure it looks like thw m.v sir robert bond

  • I think I'm gonna yakkk just looking at this!!

  • It is the MV Leif Ericson.

  • I thought so, but I didn't have a good picture for comparison.

  • Where did you get the video?

  • a friend emailed it to me... not sure where it originated

  • I'd like to know... the file as I received it was called mv caribou... anyone have any further info on this?

  • Doesn't look like the CARIBOU! What is it???
