If you were in that it would be invisible to your naked eye. Only from afar does it resolve into clouds of gas, We here are inside a nebula too and it is invisible to our eyes.

wow the pillars of creation what a cool name, i love space... the eagle nebula is by far the most beautiful thing in space i have ever seen ( well not actuall SEEN). but its so beautiful and fantastic

Neat! But the thing is, these structures (the pillars of creation) are gigantic, meaning stars are like specs to them. You've got a huge star behind them which is way too big. My guess is it was a closer star in the pic that you mistook for a larger one further away. :)
