  • Wow, nice one. One of my favorite songs of all time (even though it IS a bit of a weird song). Any change you can link to any tabs, chords or sheet music?

  • this is so good

  • THIS IS RICHARD DREFUS PLAYING

  • Words and Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller from player above,

    played by one also, above..

    is that??

is that Richard Dreyfus playing the song above???

  • nicely, done... very nice

  • Perfect♥

  • I love this. I haven't played my guitar in years. But if I do pick it up, I would love to follow your chords and try to learn this. Excellent 5-Stars *****

  • sounds fantastic. im loving this version of the song. i was actually trying to find a good quality version of the song til i stumbled here. now i just need this on my mp3 playlist :)

  • ABSOLOUTLEY WONDERFUL! Can't hear enough of it!

  • Very nice but lots of string squeek as you slide up and down the strings at 2:50 in

Could do with a spray of finger eze perhaps

  • THAT DOES IT! I'M GIVING UP THE GUITAR FOREVER! There is no way I'll ever be as good as this guy. Unless, maybe, if i practiced more. Ok, I'll try that then.

Seriously, well played! Really inspiring or discouraging ...or, as Forest Gump would say, maybe it's both. Great song! Thank you.

  • I'ved always loved this song - no one could ever sing it better than Peggy Lee (except maybe my mother who I can remember singing it when I was a child)....just beautifully performed! Thanks for this one!

  • Thanks for another great one. Do you sing? Not that you have too. Your guitar work stands alone of course. But, do you sing?

  • I love that song and like the arrangement and playing. Is it your arrangement?

Very nicely played - I imagine that's a difficult solo to do.

    - Art

  • I can't remember where it was, but I heard Leiber and Stoller talking about writing this song and saying it was the strangest one they had ever written. Stoller had written some lyrics and didn't know what to do with them. He took them to Leiber who had a strange tune in his head and then they put the two together.

A very fine arrangement for solo guitar. Thank you for sharing.

  • @steveh46

I love the stories behind the songs. Thanks for sharing that. cheers.

  • @troubleclef yeah, that's something I've always appreciated from troubleclef. He provides pertinent information. Perhaps he's an educaor too. One thing we know for sure, he's a masterfull musician. I'm always amazed at how articulate and exact he is in his playing.

  • your technique is astounding, and what's even more astounding to me is the way that you tastefully use it in the service of beauty and majesty rather than squandering it on masturbatory showoff posturing, as many might be tempted to do. cheers to you, sir, for your talent, good taste, and generosity in sharing it all with us.

  • Where's the beard ? A great guitarist need a beard look like one.

  • absolutely stunning arrangement, i love it more than the original.

Wonderful work as usual mate :)

Keep doing this, you're really really really talented.

    Cheers

  • @sickboy3883

    thanks!

  • Bravo, Bravo!! I remember listening to Peggy Lee's cover of this song in my youth brings back a lot of memories.

  • Great job! Really amazed at your interpretation of this great song, as usual. Keep it up!

  • I always love your interpretations of songs that I like, but how do you play such beautiful renditions of songs that never appealed to me before? :-)

  • MEMORIES....sigh ... This was my mother's favorite song with

Peggy Lee.....You demonstrated your immense talent playing

this complex piece ...You did a real good job....(it's normal for

you to shine ! ) Thank You TONY...

  • @PAULGODVIN

My mom's a big Peggy Lee fan too! Peggy was the bomb. Thanks, Paul.

  • I like it ,and would like to hear it again

    gruess von Munich

  • @hectorcn

  • Outstanding, man!

  • Very inspiring listening to you play this Tony, certainly one of your highlights with fine harmony, harmonics played with great technique and refinement. The whole bass accompaniment goes down very well giving a steady groove to the wonderful theme, great inventive playing, enjoyed every note,Vic.

  • @Jazzguts

    Thanks, Vic. Happy Holidays, man.

  • Tony you make me fly ! Always a pleasure :)

  • Well played Tony. Nice movement and not overplayed. This is a great song I have not heard in years. It brings back some good memories. Thank you.

    Cheers,

    allen

  • @carvetop01

thanks, Allen. Always loved the apparent amor fati of the lyrics. Quite a song.

  • @troubleclef

It is not often one trips over a reference to Nietzsche on YT. I admit that amor fati is spot on target for this tune.

    Merry Christmas Tone,

    allen

  • so lovely !! keep it up. i adore ur channel

  • I think you captured the tone beautifully

  • @isfetapep

    thanks!

  • amazing as usual.

  • @0ldfinger

thanks. hope you're digging out by now.

  • Few things as inspiring as great guitar work. The disillusionment will settle later when I go play something.

  • @browndogoz

:D Don't let it get to you. Keep on pluckin. cheers.

  • Lovely playing, a very sweet piece of music.

  • A lovely piece Tony! I didn't know this. Thanks for playing it so I can learn this piece. I love the chord progression and melody...

You really should write this down and publish a book, Tony! It would sell! I would buy it!

    Peo

  • @AndanteLargo

I appreciate it man. Writing, though, not my strong suit. A skill I wish I had.

  • I wish I could play guitar...you are truely inspirational !!!

  • Ahhh they just don't write them like that nowadays'. Well crafted & performed.

  • @DavetheIV

    You're damn right. Thanks, buddy

  • I love these kind of songs with its harmonies - and the rhythm!

Thanks Tony for a new favorite of mine!

best regards from Geboltskirchen (snowy winter),

    Wolfgang

  • @Vreci

Thanks, Wolfgang. Glad you liked it.

  • Wonderful performance, Tony! I always love to listen to your songs. Such a real pleasure!

Have a nice sunday, my friend!

    ~Bernd

  • @BoeckmannLudwig

Thanks, Bernd. Do you know if this song is or was popular in German-speaking countries? I always felt it had a smoky Berlin cabaret feel to it. And the songwriters were evidently inspired by a Thomas Mann story. Just wondering if it was ever a hit over there.

  • @troubleclef

    Hi Toni,

I'm sorry, I can't help you concerning this question. I don't think it was very popular, I listened to other songs in 1970. The cabaret feeling is absolutely there and the fien de siecle literature of Thomas Mann could be the inspiration. Nevertheless it's a wonderful song and I really like your guitar arrangement!

    Cheers,

    Bernd

  • Magical !

  • Very nice !!!

  • amazing!!!! 10/10 :)

  • your videos are always an authentic musical treat. This surely is!

    Regards,

    P.

  • @Qpidon

    thanks!

  • Hi, Tony! Well, this is for sure one of the best arrangements of yours. The fast changes of capo chords, the combination of artificial harmonics with basses, the typical ragtime bassline and that soft sound of your Taylor with a continuous sul tasto are simply fantastic. Top notch playing, honestly. Favorited, obviously.

  • @chamacojesus

I truly appreciate it, my friend. Best wishes for a happy and creative new year to you.

  • This is a masterful arrangement, and of course well played as always.

  • Showing your diversity again, Tony. I like how you bounce back & forth between genres; it keeps your repertoire ever surprising. Are you able to return to a piece after time has passed, and play it without too much rediscovery, or do you rather find it, record it, then forget it? Great job! ~Jon

  • @FlyingHorseKnuckles

I can relearn from watching my old clips pretty quickly, actually. Even harder things that i've forgotten completely. Except in the case of Bach or something like that. To relearn the Fugue I played four years ago I'd have to start from scratch with the sheet music. Cheers. Happy New Year.

  • You really shine on tunes like these. Bravo! thanks for sharing

  • @drmlabs

    thanks, i appreciate it

  • great tony :)

  • @chudnovsky

    thanks, Alex

  • @exacerbatedtaboo

    thanks!

  • Feels great.

  • wow.

  • Thank you, I enjoyed that a lot.

  • Brilliant Tony...one of my all time favorites...never expected to hear on guitar. When can we expect your CD to be available....I can't wait to purchase one!!!!

  • @m2xvdXfs

thanks. well I hope there will be in the next few months. I'll do an announcement video when the time comes. Be sure to subscribe. cheers.

  • this is fantastic, man.

  • Alway superb playing. Sounded like it had this "ragtime" feel (to me anyway)

    5*

    --van

  • @van1976

thanks, Van. I'd say it's more of a between-the-wars Berlin cabaret style tune. I think that's what Leiber and Stoller were going for, anyhow. But that style had jazz and ragtime influences, for sure.

  • Perfect... no more, no less :)

  • Terrific

  • Very good, How can I get this guitar sound on a record?

    The harmonics are very clean

  • @jraqp58

there are ways to save youtube audio to mp3. I don't know how good they are..

    thanks!

  • Very good, How can I get this guitar sound on a record?

  • @jraqp58

Hopefully I'll have a cd for sale some time in 2011. If you mean "how do I make my own recordings sound like this", I'd say get a great guitar and a decent mic. (but I don't think my home recordings sound all that great, compared to some others)

  • You are one amazing player, Tony. Merry Christmas to ya!

  • @fredthejunkman

thanks, Fred. Merry Christmas to you too.

  • Ohhh....very nice. Thank you.

  • Sweet !!!

  • Brillant as always Tony.

Lynn From Snowy Scotland (2 ft and frozen solid)
