Since the US hasn't been in a traditional war in Afghanistan the mind set of troops is eschewed. Some who are looking to get into combat will look for an excuse to do so and the ones who have fallen to baser desires will try to find ways to satisfy their wants. The same sort of thing happened in Europe and Japan after the end of the war during the occupation.

Another thing the military learned in Vietnam was to keep a tight lid on this sort of thing. When the My Lia massacre and it's cover-up became public knowledge there was an international outcry that was so loud and long that it was attributed as being a significant part of Americas eventual defeat in that war

This is messed up and it's horrifying, but what do you expect? This a profession where you are paid to kill. They dress it up all pretty, and sure, sometimes a military is necessary, but when you train and pay young men to kill other people without freezing up, you're obviously going to create a couple psychos. They're a byproduct of an ugly system. You have to keep this in mind when you start a war.

It totally sucks for Winfield, but I'm glad he can sleep with a clear conscience at least.
