I am a classical, concert violin soloist, not a fiddler, and I looked up the sheet music for this it looks really easy, the tone on your fiddle is mediocre at best, (in the violin world at least), because of the thin scratchy toe you get when playing the open E string. Sooo.... switch to a fourth finger on the A or a 2nd finger in 3rd position on the A to fix the tone, clean up the runs, by using your wrist more in bowing, relax your bow arm, and employ the use of VIBRATO! keep up the hard work!
actually in fiddle music you are not supposed to use 4th finger or 2nd finger in 3rd pos. If you fiddle, you are to use an open string when possible. take it from a pro, not a classical violinist.
@909me1 You dont know the FIRST thing about the fiddle. ok you are supposed to play an open string when possible so stop trying to make it seem like youre smart.
Hello, I'm a violin player also and I'm in the Floyd County Youth Symphony. I'm also the first chair violin in school. It just so happens that I have this song and I've been playing it for about a month or two. My Private teacher showed it to me and it was hard, but now I'm really good at it. My friend (who learned it after I showed it to her) had a question for anyone who could play this; How do you go so fast when I can't keep my bowing right?
Hi Charlie, Your playing is very nice and I love the tone you are getting out of the fiddle. Can you tell us about your fiddle and bow? How you have everything set up, etc. Like I said the tone and playing are good to my ear.
@BobDaniel56 Thank you! It's a Cervini 300 violin with Pirastro Obligato strings.
The bow is just a cheapo no name brand. It's the strings that make the tone quite "dark". Have since sold the outfit and now play a 5 string electric which I prefer because you can adjust the tone, add effects etc.
great bow hand and bow control. you have to teach the other fiddle instructors online. they dont even have the basics doen and theey are teaching others. a messy bow hand pisses me off and i congradulate you on your great examplle
i dont know what arrangment you have but the one i'm learning your suppose to play as fast as u can. i got the music 2 days and play it 4 times faster. try going faster
This guy is very food for having only played for two years. I'm an Irish fiddler and the slower speed is helping me learn it by ear since I can't read music (or remember the names of my tunes for that matter). My only critique is that you should try to clean up your bowing a little for a clearer, sweeter sound. Good job though!
huh? i am a child fyi. i dont get ur comment. i CAN play it backwards, and i DID learn it in 5 mins, and i dont see whats weird about that. and i DIDNT insult the musician if thats wat u mean either. i was just saying.
I really love the way you play this song!! The slower speed almost makes it sound different, more inviting so to speak. Beautiful playing!! So clean and clear and perfect!!
On that last section of the song, try moving the wrist in tiny circles as opposed to moving from the shoulder and elbow - less movement allows for faster, cleaner movement.
I currently play in a youth orchestra, I am going to be doing a solo sometime in June.
Genre of music... hmmm.... thats hard.
I like playing pieces that grab my attention. Of course I don't have the luxury of picking the choice of music that the group plays but more or less often the pieces that I play are fairly well known. Currently the youth orchestra I am in we are play the Magic Flute -W. A. Mozart and the Dritte Symphonie by Jean Sibelius.
Just a suggestion, when you play the fiddle, you want your wrist to be loose, so your not using your elbow from all your right hand motion, have your wrist hand limp, and use that for the bow motion. It should help with your playing. I've played for almost 5 years
Thank you, that's very kind. While I have a lot of respect for fine classical violinists, the problem is they need to follow too many rules, with little opportunity to improvise.
Seems like a lot of violinist is always trying to tell a fiddle player his technique is not correct. I think your doing a fine, fine job! Just keep playing how your playing. Lot of fiddler's out there wishing they could play as well as you. violinist don't ever hear the talent, they just see the mistakes.
not bad again. same advice, but it's easier to see here: loosen your wrist - when you're on an upbow, bend your wrist and just generally relax it more.
I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, but have recently picked up the banjo and violin. I'm getting pretty good on the jo, but fiddling is a different animal altogether. What's the difference in tuning a violin and a fiddle, and how tight should your bow-string be?? Actually, I have progressed better than I thought i would.
No difference in tuning: GDAE for both. The bow should be tightened so that there is still a fair amount of curving in the stick. Good luck with your new instruments.
Thanks. The bow is what i'm having a problem with. I've never really been around any fiddlers to get hints on technique or tension, and you can't learn that from a video. I'll maybe take a lesson or two.
hey man,i got a violin from my girlfriend.. i don't know how to play or even tune this instrument.. i know how to play guitar.. im amaze on how you play.. can you teach me some techniques? please.. thanks..
It depends on the fiddling style. Appalachian is AEAE, Irish is just GDAE. For this particular song...also known as Millionaire's Hoedown-just leave it as GDAE.
with a vein like that, boy...i'd have myself a time..heheheh

to smiley2--1 child or not, you are on YouTube and carry responsibility to be at
least respectful! try being a bit complimentary, and somewhat sincere. it will
get you to better places than bragging about
playing backwards or learning in 5 min. start
growing up. you need to. because the world will not tolerate your sort of childishness.
