Anyone out there know how long it might take to cool boiling water to the right temp? I'm worried I might boil the water when I break in my press lol.
@pugggs OOPS scrap that wrong comment ROFL I have posted on another video about taking the beaker out of the press. Just realized wrong video lol I usually let it cool down 2 mins you sure 1 is ok?
I really like your choice of words. "taste is a spectrum" and you're right. There isn't exactly a right or wrong way, just preferred taste. Love the video.
yes! i love it when u said taste is a spectrum!! there is no right way to drinking coffee and people shouldnt dislike the way u drink it. rather with a lot of cream and sugar, rather u drink it dark, rather u like it organic, rather u like it bold, or rather u like it medium roasted!
I make coffee in a french press several times per day (I have one at work and one at home.) Since I rarely fill the press to the top, I just swish the coffee around before pushing the plunger down to the top of the liquid. I also wrap a towel around my press to keep the heat in while it steeps... for 5 minutes.
Do yourself a favor... buy an electric kettle. It's fast, water will always be the perfect temperature and there is no danger of superheated microwave water explosions.
I have discovered that french press coffee should be the "basic" method of coffee preparation short of a full espresso setup (not the domestic versions, the big boys) instead of common drip coffee makers. Some traditional drip coffee drinkers may consider the french press to be elitist, but I contend that the Turkish coffee method is the pinnacle of coffee consumption, although as yet I have not tried it. Currently looking for a nice place in Seattle to have my first.
@dmhorus I agree for the most part. I think French Press is pretty easy, as well as a cone filter which also makes a great cup of coffee. Turkish coffee is great, but much more difficult to make than a French Press. Italian Coffee pots are even more complex than French Presses.
I have a comercial coffee machine , but i could never depart from my trusty french press! provides one of the best tasting coffee! Simple yet effective.
@MistahTibbs what kind of grinder do you use now? Can i just use a typical small blade grinder? I know a burr grinder is ideal but have wondering how much it matters.
I only do a French Press. His video is spot on, but I do it a little differently.
When I fill the kettle with water, I grind the beans. Once the kettle boils, I pour in the water, then stir it with a chop stick (I keep a lot of them for cooking - doesn't mar stainless steel). Then I put on the blunger... and take a shower. 10 minutes later I plunge it slowly... and have a good cup of coffee to start the day. The grounds are great in the composter too.
For those who drink coffee on ice, I can recommend, using French press same way, just using cold water and letting it sit overnight in the fridge. Press it down in the morning and pour it over ice. The result and very smooth and flavorful "brew"
Sweet. I just bought a french press last night after my sister brought me home some Ritual coffee from San Francisco. This video saved my morning. Yum! :D
,,,nice,,I do drip coffee,,So I go get a F press and just roasted columbin an a eathyopian style make 5 pots all taste earthy or like a dirty or all bass taste but not bitter , No grounds in coffee when I pour it ,,,just killing me What ya think you seam like you know what your doing,,,your behind a bar,,,
I am going to have to use hotter water when I brew mine. This morning I thought it would be better to use water way before it actually hit boiling and what happen was that my coffee ended up being very cold. However, I did notice it had more flavor than my dripper.
Must have been a fine grind with the pump action in the middle. If you are feeling a lot of resistance, enough for you to use upper body force, DO THAT LITTLE LIFT/PUMP. Why? because if you don't the coffee can explode out of the pot, through the spout, and burn you, or just as bad, create a mess, which both stop you from drinking the coffee.
Hey thanks for telling us, i thought for a moment there it might be shit.

I orginally bought a french press to make drugs in. But it does make a mean cup of coffee too. It's a double win .

surrounded by idiots.. this video makes your whole operation looks amateurish when it could be great.
1st few seconds of comedy would be fine, but you guys have overdone it.
I love my coffee, but this video production is a confused effort. Cheap comedy.

Been drinking coffee from a french press, almost exclusively, for about 8 months now. Any other kind just isn't...."right."
Might have to get myself a Baratza Virtuoso Grinder for that perfect grind for my press.
mmmm. Coffee's on!

Can you explain more? You mean, mix coffee grind with water and let sit overnight, then press?
paulpancake 2 years ago
Yes, you are correct. Just use a little more grounds than you normally would.

i tried it, the cold coffee will not taste acidic at all, therefore Sugar is unnecessary. Pour and go in the morning.
