I've always thought Princess Zelda and Link loved each other (or at least Zelda loving Link) because at the end of the game she holds his hand and looks sorrowful to send him back to the past. What I think they did is made a bunch of girls like Link and have him show no emotion back to leave the player the ability to think which girl he would end up with. Link is pretty much whatever the player wants him to be.
