I heard L'arpeggiata, and my hero Doron on cornetto nero,
at Carnegie Hall (Zankel) on Friday night do a splendid recital of music
from Teatro d'a more, the CD which Zefiro torna is on.They are
absolutely fantastic- historical vetted, uptempo, fresh, exciting, and when you marry these supremely, amazingly, stunningly talented musicians, with the ethereal and blended voices of Nuria Philippe - you have a celestial event !!
O mio Dioooooooooo la tecnica di semicrome della Rial é la più bella che abbia mai sentito O_O Legate, chiare. Un vero e proprio strumento musicaleeee O_O
oh my god! Nuria Rial semocrome technique has the best I've ever heard O_O
This is a very nice and delightful version of "Zefiro Torno". However in my opinion, there is also a version of equal magnificance by Nadia Boulanger in 1937 and re-released on Angel. It has an absolutely 'other-worldly' quality about it. Available as a sample here, but you have to look for it.
Yeah, whatever. I was thinking about uploading a baroque painting, maybe. a simple motif, theme, etc. shouldn't be enough. I'm just being pedantic, on the other hand :)
@iaquil This is one of the most important characteristic of baroque music and late renaissance... it is happy, delightful music that is meant to heal the wounds of the heart. great stuff.
What a completely luscious performance of Monteverdi's luscious music. The instrumentation and the singing combine perfectly - so full of life and air and beauty. I feel sorry for people who are not exposed to this kind of music; it should be popular - that groove is infectious!
I've listened to this music a few hundred times but still enjoy every note. And even better this way: with a beautiful picture presented to us with good taste and much imagination!
Per me quella e' "sublime e commovente". Se preferisci la versione di Rial e Jaroussky, allora e' solo una questione di gusti personali. Grazie per il tuo parere, ma e' stato il mio.
The video is really very beautiful, but Nicholas Spanos and Theodora Baka's version is much better where it's very distinct when a man is singing . Here it sounds almost like 2 women singing...
No, it's exactly because I've listened to this music much and know very well what a countertenor is and how discenible he usually sounds from a female voice. I mentioned whose version I consider a perfect example of this. I meant it only for Jaroussky's voice which doesn't sound masculine to me at all and I need to listen to it very closely to discern that it's still a man singing...
Why did you choose the year 1789? Mozart died 2trs later, Beethoven wasn't even in his prime yet (9th symp. completed 1824) & then there were Chopin, Brahms, Hayden, Tchaikovsky, all born after 1789. As for non-musical art, Picasso, Dali, etc. Many great musical works have been completed after that year.
I'm just not sure what you mean about "love of life" and lost it. Could you elaborate a little? I'm interested to know exactly what you mean.
WOW!! This is Amazing!!!! I consider myself a huge classical music fan & not just the the big 3 "Bach, Mozart, Beethoven) I love Giovanni Gabrieli, Handel & Corelli. Scarlatti & Purcell are nice, & I also like some other not so well knows. I have never really heard anything like this! It almost 'Rocks"! The closest thing to it I have heard would be, maybe Pierre Certon. But this is really hopping! Drums & all! Who is actually playing (not composing) this? I love the interpretation!
Yes is "La primavera" (The Spring) of Sandro Botticelli (Florence 1445- 1510). The lyric is inspired to a sonetto of the great italian poet Francesco Petrarca (Arezzo 1304- Arquà 1374). The music is, obviously of Claudio Monteverdi, "il divino" (Cremona 1567- Venezia 1643). Well, sublime italian art. I am proud of being italian
fox1810, your comment is valuable and I don't see why sb deleted it. I must disagree with you, yet. It isn't possible to know EXACTLY how it sounded then, but we can try to imitate it basing on theory, which bring us closer to the ideal, or give in and perform it as if it were Romanticism. I had such a performance on CD and had to discard it, for it was unbearable. Consider sagarzon's comment - if some people like it the way Baroque ensembles do it, let them :)
I agree with fox1810, is nonsense to think that we know how it was played at the time of Monteverdi. NOBODY lived at that time, ergo we do not know how they played at that time.
This is heard here is not historically, is a very nice invention, but nothing more.
I repeat what I said in a previous message that someone removed. NOBODY knows how this music was played in Monteverdi´s time. This version is subjective and questionable as any other.
Not true. There very much are degrees of subjectivity and we do have a certain amount of knowledge as to how music sounded at that time. We may not have firsthand knowledge, however we have their words which we can use to develop our ideas of their soundscapes from. There are versions which we do KNOW are more accurate than others; and we can prove that.
musicologists can study the music, including contemporary tutors' descriptions of how to play, and recreate the style of the time. In absoluto of course it will never be exactly the same, because two times playing the same piece will never be exactly the same in all particulars (unless played by robots).
but it's pish to say that we can't recreate it because no one alive today was living then.

Very ugly the percussion, it is so vulgar. Careful, do not know how it played in Monteverdi's time, NOBODY knows, this is a very subjective and modern instrumentation.
I like it all. If anyone different to you likes it, wouldn't it be just enough? Isn't music made for everyone? Maybe if it had the instrumentation you like, it wouldn't be so nice to other people.
Humans have the right to be different!!! So criticism must be kept for oneself.
