This actually helped me out a lot. I just started playing guitar and I was kinda getting discouraged because a lot of things were confusing me. Thanks for the lesson :)
Those are the notes of the strings when played open, of course. They are actually numbered too. In this video, my numbering system is the opposite of the standard.
very good my friend can do cords ok but strumming and the rythm got me you have explained this song very well that i could understand it i am going to give your 4 lessons a go and see if i can pick it up all thye best and thanks
i just started to play guitar, and i really wanted to learn something by myself in a way to show my teacher sometime and surprise him. lol. Anyways this was one of the easiest video's for me to follow and actually learn something! So thanks!
Forget these negative swines man, I couldn't play anything on guitar until I watched this and I'm now banging out Knocking on Heavens Door for fun. You got me playing my first song (and many others too I would imagine) so you have my thanks! The Internet seems to be full of opinionated people who think they could do better... but for some strange reason, they never seem to do so!
Don't worry, this video has over 100,000 views and almost a 5 star rating. I see the positive comments as far overwhelming the occassional naysayer. No teaching style (or anything else for that matter) works for everyone. It's fine if other people prefer a different way.
Cool. it's just a shame that the naysayers always seem to be so opinionated but never seem to do their own lessons! Anyways, thanks man, i can now play a song people can recognise and sing along to... wicked! Thanks!
it's a bad thing giving begginers "lessons" and mix up numbering of the strings, it just creates bad habits and confuses begginers who then go to other sources and get confused. and things like messing up the names of the thingers just makes it harder (it's needed more focus from the student) to follow...
Seriously? So, if a beginner learns where to put there fingers, and concentrates on playing cleanly, playing in time, and gets the idea that with practice they can get this, you think the names of the strings are a big deal?
How hard do you think it would be for a person to realize "other sources" are using different names for the same thing? Especially such a simple shift from top to bottom.
No, I'm just not concerned with these hobgoblin details. I believe names are not the key.
Don't be sorry. You're just talking to a different audience than I am.
For people who can "just listen to the CD" and figure it out, they shouldn't watch my lessons. As I've said many times, these lessons are for those of us who can't just do that. Many people don't need to be told what the chords are either. But many do. And many more need more details than just what chords and "go listen to the cd." This lesson is for them.
Great lesson i just started playing but i have a question, at 2:17 it looks like your taking the ring finger off but you say take the index finger off. can you please tell me which one is right?
Thanks. You can contact me on youtube directly by going to my channel (click my name above) and choosing to "Send Message." That will go directly to me and only me.
Not tough in a bad way but when you talk about the "timing" or on beat and how it's a CRIME not to play on time. But it's all good because you do tell us to slow down a little until we get it. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. It's all good!! Thank you. Really - you helped me a lot. And YOU did miss :-)
Ah, I see. It's not the lesson that's tough, just me. I stand by that thought still. It just doesn't sound good if it's played when your fingers get there, not when the tune wants it to be.
Great lesson man. As a complete and utter beginner the way you explained chords and the strumming were exactly what I needed. Don't know if you have done any other songs as I haven't looked yet but I hope so.
This was an excellent lesson for me as a beginner! Found this clip on my very first day of guitarpractice, tried it over and over again and it took me about 2 days to get it right.
Some guys might want to whine about chords etc, but for me as a beginner this was just what i needed. This makes it so much more pedagogical when it comes to practicing chords. It is ten times more fun when you can play with the chords and actually do an easy tune and not just simple chords over and over again.
Also, please don't explain chords (it's very annoying); if a person doesn't know that then that is where they should start, by learning some basic chords.
That's the strumming pattern you want, and you should use it. But not everyone is required to use the same one. I suggested a different one.
As for chords, again that's your opinion. This lesson is intended for the beginner. The idea is to teach them a song, not just some chords that aren't connected to anything. So, while it may not work for you, it works for many others.
And a person should start wherever they want to, as long as it is successful.
just wanna say thanks for the video. No matter what others may say i thought that you were clear and made it easy to understand. Thanks again from michigan.
you dont know how to play guitar firstly you numbered the strings the wrong way secoundly to play a Proper chord you have to mute them of course it matters otherwise it sounds awful and its not the proper sound
I think they are talking about that you don't strum over the soundhole. You are playing up the neck so it fits in the video, etc. I think that's the issue.
It's a lovely Martin D-1. Untouched. It's as it came. Nothing wrong with the length of the neck. I don't know what you mean by "pricks," but I'm very happy with the guitar.
Just encouraging people who give lessons to give them right. As for Meanieofhibernia86's comment. Not all haters are people that have been in lessons since five that mommy and daddy paid for them. I am commenting fomr knowing what I am talking about, I only been playing 2 years and bought my own lessons.
No. It does matter on the ACTUAL I am tired of seeing people who think they are SUCH great guitarists and dont even know basic shit like that.Without that the experienced one who knows what he is talking about confuses the one who watches vids like this that teach them the wrong shit.I knew a guy who was playing for 2 years and he was like how your lessons are he didnt know the #s and put on an Am and said it was a G chord. Now do you see where I am getting at?He played good but knew nothing.
Confusing and Am and a G chord is going to be a problem for anyone trying to read chords. (Not to mention...how can anyone confuse a minor and a major? How do you develop the sense of the difference if you are confused by which is which?) But who cares which string is which? How hard is it to clarify any confusion? Seems like a pretty unimportant detail. That's why I didn't worry about it.

You are quite wrong about timing and this is what my lessons are for. People with attitudes like yours make it hard for lots of people to learn to play.

There is a third thing you can do. Hit the wrong notes. Open strings or muted strings would be the most popular. This could be called passing chords.
However, the best thing to do is to do a combination of all three. Practice, play only as fast as you can do and use passing chords.

Thank you so much for your help on this song. I've been trying to learn guitar unsuccessfully for a couple of years. One of my major problems is keeping rhythm and your videos were really helpful in that area. Keep up the good work, James!

I remember practicing going from C to F Barred for days at a time-I sucked so bad, now I'm just poor, but I hit it most of the time.

You're observant. I do have my pinkie, middle finger, and thumb straight. It's just those damn index and ring fingers I have to think about. What can I say...at least I've got my left from my right hand down.
