This is the greatest rendition ever of "Sympathy for the Devil". I've been trying to find a good MP3 copy of the song. If anyone can help out, please let me know.
I met him when I was on a Rolling Stones in about 1972. This song just blew me away. How can anyone NOT understand what this song is about listening to this version. I was 22 then. I am 62 now. Are you still alive?? I live in Montana now-- but my soul lives before. Forty fucking years ago... shit. I never before or since have heard this song the way you did it!! Remember LA??
i saw him play at the intersection in grand rapids in the 70s. he was a powerful performer. especially doing this song! he did a beautiful version of bonnie koloc's "roll me on the water".
Wow! I was lucky enough to play guitar and write with Jon for 25 yrs.I visited him in Colorado in 2000 and he gave me all our old rehersal tapes and some copyrights. The man was my best friend and a true genius. He helped me more than anyone in the music buisness and stood by his friends come hell or high water.I miss you my friend.Dennis Lloyd
@TheOilcan101 Dennis, you're a lucky man. I still have Jonathan's vinyl and it's a shame that the label went toes-up. What a voice, what a talent! I bumped into Bob Babbit, who played bass on that album and all these years (and thousands of records that Bob played on) later, he remembers that record well. Am I to understand that Jonathan has shuffled off this mortal coil? If so, the world is poorer for it.
@Tomteriffic1952 Hi Tom,Nice of you to post about Jon. I grew up with his entire family in Roseville, Mi. and all ten of them are talented people. His Mother is still singing in the Italian clubs around town...I think! I got my break with Jon when he decided to play heavy rock (originals of course). He was playing with Ted Lucas (RIP)
Steve Fava, just prior to that. We offered our stuff to Westbound Records and played out a few times. He was as gifted a writer as any.
It was in march or April of 75 I was driving from Killeen to Tucson and was somewhere in west Texas on 190 when I heard this song three a.m ona foggy road right after the poem where J. Denver speaks about war... song scared me outta my panys... never forgot it and that was over 30 years ago.... good memories ty for the post
I first heard this version in the late 90's. A radio DJ was talking about a song he had heard on a station in Dallas back in the 70's and it had made a lasting impression on him. Well, this DJ sent his tech people to track down this song, which they did, and he played it around Halloween. I heard it and never forgot Jonathan Round's name. I live in Toledo and wish I could have gone to his performance here... but I would have been too young to appreciate it then :( I would love to hear more!
I saw Jonathan Round perform at the University of Toledo in the early 1970's, and he was outstanding! I bought his LP and listened to it often, for years. Over the years I wondered what happened to him, and sought his music online (fruitlessly, obviously). Sad to hear he has died, but his music, beyond this terrific rendition, is fine!
@BarryAlcock1 I also saw him perform at Central Michigan University about '73 or '74 ..can't remember......he blew us all away with this rendition.....what a great performance. RIP Johnathan.
I am interested in purchasing this album from anyone that may wish to sell it. Johnathan Round passed in Early 2009. I knew John and part of his family. I do a radio show and upon finding out abouit his death set out to do a tribute show. I invited his younger brother Dave Mariotto to be apart of it. Please contact me if you have a copy of his album for sale.
@Letocovington Try looking up record exchange or vintage vinyl record stores in St. Louis or make a request on Ebay! I heard this first also on K-She'95...a very haunting song and better than the Stones origional.
@Letocovington i do have a copy of johnathan rounds lp, it is in storage with some of my collection, let me know if you are interested in buying it, i would have to find it,i know it's in good shape. jim hood
Interesting version. I haven't seen him in almost 20 years. He was my first stand-up comedy teacher at Mark Ridley's old club on Woodward Ave around 1988-89. I still have all that old paperwork with his pictures on it and his resume. Sad to hear of his passing, he was a very interesting fellow and mentor.
I have his album. Back inthe day a pal came in with it. Said he got it from a guy giving them away from the trunk of his car. Pal gave it to me. It's great to hear it fresh again!
I first heard this cover on KSHE fm radio in the early 70's. I searched for it years ago but could never find it. I'm sorry to hear of Johnathon Round's passing, but delighted to know that his rendition of Sympathy for the Devil will never die. He did it the way it was supposed to be heard.
I knew John back in late sixties/early seventies before he recorded Sympathy. Sadly he passed away in February, 2009 from a heart attack. Go to the Detroit News Death Notice archive search. His given name was Mariotto. There's a real nice tribute to him telling a lot about him. The tribute appeared in the Detroit News in March of 2009.
Wow! I had no idea he had been alive up to a few months ago. He seemed to have a good life though, living in Colorado and doing what he liked best, theater. Thanks for the info.
