@JakeMansonNYC Mickey Rivers was an addicted gambler. Mostly horse racing. It wasn't unusual for him to be at Aqueduct or Belmont before a Yankee night home game. If there was a day game, he'd be at the harness races at night or the Meadowlands night races in Jersey.
He was indeed a heavy gambler. The team used to give him salary advances, which is normally something no club does, and Billy Martin used to give him money right out of his pocket. On the surface it would appear Mickey was immature and somewhat ignorant but it was hard for players to stay mad at him cause he cracked everybody up. He was a street smart guy who just lived for the moment and didn't take things too seriously.
@JakeMansonNYC ---he was an immature asshole ---God knows how he gambled or wasted away his earnings. I love that remark----his goal is to stay injury prone!
I don't dislike Bill Lee. I like flaky guys who don't conform and Bill Lee was like that, but truthfully his negative feelings towards the Yankees should've been directed only at Graig Nettles and Rivers, both of whom worked him over in that brawl in May of 76. The Yankees had several players that any team would've loved because they were classy: Chambliss, Hunter, Dent, Roy White, Dick Tidrow, Guidry & others. They weren't all assholes. I think maybe the Sox needed a few assholes like that.
You know, for somebody who said, "Ain't no sense worryin' 'bout stuff you got control over, 'cause if you got control, ain't no sense worryin', and ain't no sense worryin' 'bout stuff you got NO control over, 'cause if you got no control, ain't no sense worryin'," Mick the Quick sure did a lot of worryin'.
I just bought this on dvd for $1 at Big Lots!

@loyaldude10 As Bill Lee said, "Show me a club with 25 assholes and I'll show you the Yankees."
