@ReallyRottenLionel Royce isn't considered a Jiu-Jitsu god by anyone who knows anything about grappling. People respect him because he's a veteran and a risk taker who was willing to fight out of his weight class and against top competition. His technique, especially in the early UFCs, was incredibly basic.
Fabricio Werdum is a very highly respected Jiu-Jitsu competitor. He is leagues above Royce. You really can't compare the two.

@felipede0107 Rickson backed out of fighting Sakuraba twice. once because of his son's death, which is of course totally understandable. the 2nd time because he said the 3 million Pride was offering him wasn't enough money, when it would have been the highest payout to a single fighter in MMA history. The problem with Rickson was he kept saying how he could easily beat Saku, Bas Rutten and Fedor, yet he would not get in the ring with them.

@LUCASviaKIMURA in all fairness Saku did have a loss to a Rickson pupil in Elvis Nino Schmebri. Saku was dominating the fight when he was caught by an accidental headbutt that slumped him over and Schembri finished it with a knee and soccer kicks.
Saku then dominated him again in their rematch gaining the victory. He spent the entire fight just beating Schembri up as he did before he got caught in their first fight.

@Rayman77792 actually Sakuraba was a Catch as can catch wrestler. he didn't train in jiu jitsu or judo. He was taught by Billy Robinson in the Snake Pit along with many of the Takada dojo fighters.

Saku was the better grappler, he proved that time and time again. The gracies are just sour because they discovered they weren't the superior grapplers anymore and made excuse after excuse as to why they lost. Saku however is always a man of respect and honour.

Saku broke Renzo's arm, then stayed right there with him and comforted him and congratulated him on a great fight until a response team got there. BJ could possibly beat him or not. Saku dominated anyone within 20lbs of his own weight of 183lbs when he was still in prime. BJ is actually about Saku's weight. He's the only man to sub a Gracie or even Quinton Rampage Jackson in MMA. He's also beat 7 UFC champs and 3 Kings of Pancrase.

Royce tested positive for steroids in their rematch and most pundits felt Sakuraba was robbed in the decision aswell.

@patrickwise06 Far as i know the only link is that many of the fighters from it's inception used Catch Wrestling which is derived from pankration. The name of the company was very similiar obviously but i can't say for sure how the creators of Pancrase came to name it.
@sugar135able i've worked bjj for a couple years (about 3 years after UFC 1 happened, it was the influence for this training). wrestled from the age of 9 to 20 (freestyle and collegiate). trained just a lil bit in catch wrestling. trained in karate for about 5 years and even did a lil bit of boxing.I'm no great athlete mind you. just loved trying different things.

I was actually rooting for Royce in that fight too btw. as the the steroids. the result technical record stayed the same because at the time the California State Athletic commission had no rule for reversing decisions even in the case of steroid use. And Royce is now free to fight again because he finished serving his suspension which was the remainder of his fight license at that time that had a year left.

I like Sakuraba but this video is slightly misrepresentative in that it constantly shows Gracies on the ground which to the untrained eye seems like Sakuraba is "owning" them but anyone that knows the Gracie's style knows that they prefer to fight from the ground on their back so they're not necessarily at a disadvantageous position

@LUCASviaKIMURA in all fairness Saku did have a loss to a Rickson pupil in Elvis Nino Schmebri. Saku was dominating the fight when he was caught by an accidental headbutt that slumped him over and Schembri finished it with a knee and soccer kicks.
Saku then dominated him again in their rematch gaining the victory. He spent the entire fight just beating Schembri up as he did before he got caught in their first fight.

@Rayman77792 actually Sakuraba was a Catch as can catch wrestler. he didn't train in jiu jitsu or judo. He was taught by Billy Robinson in the Snake Pit along with many of the Takada dojo fighters.

And if you have a problem with me saying Royce was on roids take that up with the California State Athletic commission. He tested positive on two samples and was suspended for his fight license, it's a fact. I've even defended the Gracie family at times except in the case of Royce's steroids and wanting to make his own rules.

@InfoRoom Sakuraba doesn't use jiu jitsu actually. he is a Catch as Catch Can Wrestler (submission wrestling derived from Greek Pancratian. much older that GJJ) As for Penn. BJ could possibly beat him or not. Saku dominated anyone within 20lbs of his own weight of 183lbs when he was still in prime. BJ is actually about Saku's weight. He's the only man to sub a Gracie or even Quinton Rampage Jackson in MMA. He's also beat 7 UFC champs and 3 Kings of Pancrase.

Also it can be traced back to the old pro wrestlers such as Lou Thesz and Karl Gotch who fought shoots As for Saku losing to plenty of Gracie's i think fusion mentioned it best. Royce tested positive for steroids in their rematch and most pundits felt Sakuraba was robbed in the decision aswell.

The ancients greeks praticed Pankration wich was a primitive form of MMA, and basically MMA is a figth were you are allowed to strike and go to the ground, so get to guy to figth with no rules and that is MMA.So in my opinion no organization created MMA, it just made it popular and there has always been mixed figths, like Ali vs Inoki and many more prior to that.

He tested positive for steroids and did major damage to his image and legacy along with being suspended for the remainder of his fight license

@mendietinha he was 12 pounds heavier(188) than the fight under a year before(176). he tested positive on two separate samples for steroids. there's no denying he was caught. as for being superior in the first two rounds of the first fight. they were in the corner for 5 mins in the first round because Royce didn't want to move and allow Saku to finish the Kimura he had locked in(his rules savde him). Royce was saved by the bell in the first round from Saku kneebar. that's hardly superior bro.

I was actually rooting for Royce in that fight too btw. as the the steroids. the result technical record stayed the same because at the time the California State Athletic commission had no rule for reversing decisions even in the case of steroid use. And Royce is now free to fight again because he finished serving his suspension which was the remainder of his fight license at that time that had a year left.
