The citizens caught in the middle of this war do not support it at all (unless they're involved with the cartels), but more importantly the cartels obviously have no regard for innocent life. If you started killing innocent civilians, the cartels would either use it as a means of rebellion againts the US or they would simply disregard it entirely.

The Drug War racket is so huge and profitable that people just become cogs in the machine. The official US policy towards drugs is as hypocritical & corrupt as ANYTHING ever has been. Top officials in government, Law Enforcement, Pentagon/CIA/NSA/State Dept/DEA/FBI/ATF et al, Banking, Corporate & Private Security officials have been exploiting supply AND interdiction/prohibition for over 60 years. 90% of Mexico, Columbia & Drug Cartel violence could be eliminated by decriminalizing drugs.
